Pro Football Focus: Tom Brady is playing some of the best football of his career

One problem with PFF is that, so far as I can tell, there's no rubric for grades. They're just qualitative analyses awarded pluses and minuses. In other words, there's no way to compare Brady's 96.5 rating to his 93 rating in 2007. 1 "point" here is not a real continuous variable.

Brady's been great this season, but in no universe has he been better than he was in 2007 or 2010.

Hmmm.

Well, there is no question Tom is a better QB than the 2001-2006 era.

2007 was incredible. Hard to argue that he wasn't at his peak....but IMO it wasn't.

2008 and 2009 obviously not.

2010 and 2012 might have been his "prime". He was fully recovered from his knee injury, was all in on the avocado ice cream and yoga. His numbers show it.

2013 might have been a little slippage but he sure as hell didn't have a lot to work with so might be unfair.

After the KC game in 2014 all the way through before Dion got hurt in 2015 he was kicking ass like 2010-2012. No slippage IMO.

2016......seems a lot like 2010-2012 to me.

So the dreaded eye test tells me he is playing at peak efficiency.

Fundamentally, I think Brady has never been more sound or complete than he is this season. Every facet of his game has matured and developed, including his ability to move in and out of the pocket.

Yes, I think Brady was more dominant in 2007 and 2010, but what he is doing now is no less impressive, especially when you consider his age.

I actually think he's getting better. He's in the best shape of his life and it's showing. Brady is moving better than ever and he's never been able to throw while in the move in the ways he does now. He's extending plays and making big critical plays out of them. He's also reached a point where his real peers on defense have all retired and Brady is now like a college professor facing off against college freshman, and he's exploiting that advantage to its fullest. He's got a good OL, very good skill players who fill a variety of skill sets, a good defense, and the best coaching staff and organization in football around him. Imo he's playing the best football of his career and if he can stay healthy they should have another four seasons of this kind of play in front of them.

Brady since 2014 KC has played the best ball of his life. He got back his pocket movement before the 2008 injury and then some.

Personally I think 2006 is a very underrated year for him though and the best he was before 2014. Hogan, Edelman, Bennett and Mitchell would all have been better than any receiving threat he had in 2006. Maybe Amendola too. Let that sink it. Yes i have 2006 > 2007 and 2010. Personally I felt at times in 2007 he got a bit lazy with his reads which hurt them in the super bowl some that year.

That's a really good article.

Agreed 100%

Not taking anything away from him but Moss transformed that offense and was the biggest factor in 07'. Obviously Welker too.

06' was very underrated

The past few years he's been almost flawless

Agreed. Brady's pocket presence, timing, footwork and decision making are the best I recall seeing. He is lacking the deep ball he had in '07, but where did that get the team?
