Report: surgery for Gronk

Not open for further replies.
its an 8 week recovery time, but from a lot of other stuff ive read they suggest 12+ weeks because you can reinjure it and require an additional surgery (ie what happened to JJ Watt)

If that's true and its really an 8 week recovery, they won't bring him back just for 1 game that he'll be ill-prepared for both mentally and physically and put him at risk of reherniating the disc

I'm mentally treating this as a season ending injury and hope he has a full recovery... Absolutely horrendous news

Yup. I don't see him coming back either we need bennett to play like he did two years ago. He has the talent.

I think he plays in the Super Bowl if we make it, the 8 weeks is up a week and a half before Super Bowl 51

The Red Zone offense might have to rely on Lewis' speed with Marty hobbled.

As to Gronk coming back for the Superbowl, seems highly improbable because this team goes out of its way to give all the time he needs to recover... to the point of adding game after game to get him right.

Absolutely bummed today.....wondering what this means for his career here .,...or anywhere else.....as now being said done for season ......he has big time history of big time problems and surgeries with his back....and a lot of other areas.....Hope he does whatever is best for him and his family......Pats need to find a replacement fast!!!!!!

Bennett has to play like he did a couple of years ago. He has alot of talent to make plays.
Right.....and from all reports he is majorly banged up as well......going to be interesting

It's 7 weeks till the AFCCG and 9 weeks till the Super Bowl and the recovery time is 8 weeks.

I've read a lot of articles where surgeons suggest 12-16 weeks.. at least 6 for the surgical scarring to heal, another 6 to get back into football shape.. and that's assuming there are no setbacks during or after the procedure (like an infection, staph, etc)

Sure they can rush him back, but that would be pretty idiotic to rush him back and risk further injury for 1 game, when he won't really be able to give you 100% anyways in that 1 game after being our of football for 2 months recovering from spinal surgery

The Texans tried rushing Watt back like a bunch of idiots and it sent him onto IR with another surgery

First things first...

... game planning on a weekly basis in the next couple weeks will give us the answers on tape that we'll need on how to go forward, re: both the game plan and the players who will have to earn their keep. Who cares about the Superbowl...

Looking forward to it...

Right.....and from all reports he is majorly banged up as well......going to be interesting

Well here's his chance to get a big payday. He will be the number 1 TE now.

You are right.....he has been hurt a ton in a relatively short career...he is legendary already.....but when dealing with your back...might be time to walk away

QUOTE="Halifax_Pats_Fan, post: 4839346, member: 4399"]Like I was saying...we all love Gronk, he is likeable and he produces big time.

He is hurt a lot, lets be real he is hurt a lot, not 'the sky is falling" but Gronk gets hurt quite a bit.

If an opportunity came to move him, would they pass it up? No. That would suck but you get paid to be on the field, you get paid to be dependable, which he is WHEN he is there. I would hate to see him go but if the right (within reason) offer came, they would and should pull the trigger.

I would happily eat my words if he comes back, balls out and stays healthy.

The Gronk situation is what it is right now, focus now is obviously now on offensively game planning for life without him. We have Bennett, Jules, Danny, Hogan, White, Blount, Lewis we are looking good....I still like our chances, AND we have TB12.

Again, we go as the offensive line goes, that will be the case, and NOT having Gronk is a weird sort of way is not entirely all bad.

Not so bad...[/QUOTE]

Yes.....love Bennett and he needs to step up as much as he can...he has been extremely impressive.....more so than I ever thought he would be

Well it certainly makes it much more difficult.

If you can win a SB without your #1 option and one of Bradys binkies, I don't know why you have him at all

What?

This team isn't built around any single player... Gronk is a game changer and creates all sorts of mismatches for them, but they are still capable of winning a SB without him, its just going to be a heck of a lot harder.. Those kinds of players always make your team better, but they shouldn't make or break you

Some silver linings?
1. They traded for Martellus Bennett as a 2nd TE and as a contingency plan for this exact situation
2. Mitchell has been developing nicely and has been having his role steadily increase in the offense..
3. Dion Lewis is now back, which adds another dimension to the offense

They can survive this, there are 31 other teams that don't have a Gronkowski.. Pats just so happen to have 2 amazing TEs, so its not like a few years ago where we were playing a bunch of no names as fill ins

They can just go into a 3 WR offense, with 1 TE, 1 RB and still have a ton of talent on the field

Bennett also seems like he was signed to possibly replace Gronk. You can't trust him to stay healthy.
I hate to say it but as legendary as he is.....Gronk has almost always been dealing with a ton of injuries....and not ones you can play through.......Some of these guys are just more resilient.....but there is only ONE GRONK!!!!

Yes.....love Bennett and he needs to step up as much as he can...he has been extremely impressive.....more so than I ever thought he would be

He has been doing as much as he can and is obviously playing in pain. What I fear is that an added workload might make his whole injury situation worse. We absolutely have to find another tight end somewhere.

Graph on TV showed the only year he was healthy throughout was 2014. Not a coincidence it ended with the trophy.

Not saying "it's over" or "onto next year", but the task has just been made much tougher and the margin for error slimmer. Hoping Lewis stays on the field & keeps being amazing. That could be an important factor...

Yeah....it's over for Gronk this year guys...Brady's tone reveals the truth...

But...in BB, TB, Lewis, Minitron & Bennett we trust! Lol

Jesus. As someone with back problems and one absolutely incredibly painful bout with siatica, there isn't a hell hot enough for those assholes to burn in.

I want to preface this comment by admitting it's hard to understate what a loss Gronk is and what he brings in terms of talent and scheming capability. I wish the big guy a successful and speedy recovery.

That said, this team offensively is in a better position to withstand the blow than any other year Gronk's gone down.

1. Bennett: Our TE2, while hobbled, is a playmaker himself, and the most solid we've had since the Murderer.

2. Hogan and Mitchell: Our relative depth in 2013 was Collie and Thompkins (injured?). Hogan looks to provide a legitimate deep threat, and has a knack for getting wide open. Mitchell has looked superb the past two games and if his development continues he seems to have the ability to be a legitimate outside receiver.

3. JE and DA: JE seems to have taken a step back this year, although it's hard to determine if it is to some extent too many mouths to feed versus prior years when we were thin. Still the top receiver though. DA is a valuable WR3/4 as while he sometimes lacks the ability to get separation, he's incredibly clutch when he does. The last time Gronk went down he was playing with a DETACHED MUSCLE.

4.Lewis and White: To me, White and Vareen are pretty comparable. Lewis at 100% is a legitimate gamechanger with his elusiveness and scheming opportunities.

5. Blount: Looks more explosive to me than any other year, a legitimate upper-tier running back in the league. His lack of playmaking ability downfield on passing downs is his only realy drawback.

I'm not trying to be overly optimistic here, the loss of Gronk hurts. A lot. Just wanted to highlight what others have been saying, that we have far more talent on the offensive side of the football than in previous years, and our O-line thus far has been performing better than last year.

Lastly, who would you argue has a better team than us or stacks up better against us? There are no world-beaters in the NFL right now with no flaws.

In the AFC, only the AFC West poses any real threat (will give props to Baltimore who always seem to outperform their capabilities when playing us). If we have HFA, I'm confident we can beat any of those teams. I'm not afraid of KC. Oakland looks legit this year but has a questionable secondary and is untested in the playoff setting. Denver will definitely be a challenge but their defense, while still excellent, is not quite what it was last year. Also, they've finally begun losing the really close games that they would always win last year.

If we have to go on the road it will definitely be tougher, but I would still have the Patriots as favourites in any match up.

As for the NFC, obviously Dallas appears to be all-world right now, but again they (and Dak) are untested in a playoff atmosphere). Their secondary is questionable as well. I hate to think how toxic this board would be if we had GB's defense right now. Who else is there? Atlanta? Giants?

I guess my point is, I get that it's hard to win in the NFL, and winning the Superbowl means winning 3-4 games in a row against some really good teams. But that said, is there any team you would have as a favourite against us, even without Gronk? I just don't see it.

I kinda disagree. What 53rd guy on the roster is going to bring more value to the team than what Gronk could potentially bring to the AFCCG and Super Bowl?

AFCCG is incredibly optimistic.. that would be a 7 week recovery time.. JJ Watt was given 6 weeks and he reherniated his disc and missed the rest of the season

From what I've read and researched his best bet would be returning to the SB, IF we make it that far. Team could choose to shut him down for next year. I have zero doubts he's with the team next season for 7+ million.

Yepp. After that, it gets interesting. A clause needs to be put in where he has to play so many games to get paid.
