Dion Lewis Update

The writing on the wall was plain to see in December 2007 when the Patriots faced a series of top defenses. Suddenly the pinball scoring machine stuttered as good DCs with talented defenses markedly slowed down the Patriots O. Those December games had me very worried for the playoffs, and I'm an optimistic Pats homo.

This is not an accurate description of what happened in 2007.

Yeah, like the Eagles had a great defense in 2007. That team just ran out of gas. Can't believe that was almost 10 years ago. For some reason, that loss feels very fresh at the moment!

Well, running out of gas isn't very descriptive either. What, they were tired? I think it was more a matter of what we head Belichick say in 2009...there was a growing awareness of how to stop, or at least slow, that offense. And there were guys like Laurence Maroney and Ben Watson on that team who really weren't all that good.

It's not even that. December point totals:

Baltimore - 27 points, biggest problem was the wind, not the defense
Steelers - 34 points
Jets - 20 points (19th ranked scoring defense in 2007, not a top squad)
Dolphins - 28 points against the #30 defense, even with NE going to the "just chuck it" approach to get Moss the TD Record, and then basically shutting down after putting up 28 in the first half
Giants - 38 points

What people tend to forget about 2007 is that the Patriots generally put up points in the 30s. There was a 5 game stretch where they went above that 4 times, but that was the exception, not the rule. They put up 40+ against

Miami
Dallas
Washington
Buffalo

The one game in that stretch where they didn't get above 40 was a game where they didn't even get into the 30s (just 24 points against the Colts).

Not sure what your point is here, that the Pats offense that year was the same throughout the year? That's not true.

The offense was the same. The difference is that they didn't produce as much in the last 8 games.

1st 8 games- 41ppg
last 8 games- 29ppg

this thread is like a sick joke...i come here looking for lewis updates and you people are arguing about defenses from 10 years ago.

Agree, back on topic. From the looks of it, he is practicing but who knows when the will activate him. I think they will ease him into the season as well.

Yeah and then there's no more to say about it! We're not a damn news room here, people.

I love Blount's line about how good Lewis is in the open field..."It doesn't make any sense." That's great.

Oh man does this RB trio excites me. Before the year, it looked like we had one of the weaker groups of RB's in the league.

Now, it looks like we may have one of the best.

Look at 2007
The huge offensive displays shrunk around thanksgiving
The D held relatively strong but DCs were figuring out how to slow down the Moss-Welker offense
Despite this TFB would find ways to make a bonus TD or so happen
But the 40, 50 fireworks displays were gone
By February with a long 2 weeks to review what did and what did not work in december, the Jints knew how to limit the Pats offense. They overachieved on D but the die was cast.

Wait, wait just a minute! Are you telling me it took the rest of the league 12 weeks to figure out to double Moss and Welker?
