PATS TRADE JAMIE COLLINS!!!

That escalated quickly.

Pro tip: Disagreeing with someone is not necessarily the same as being disagreeable.

ok, I'll admit, I'm frustrated and more irritable than usual

You have to admit thought that you kind of had it coming with that comment though. After all, you are the one trying to make the case that someone who was averaging 105 rec, 1,115 yards, and 7 TDs over the past three seasons* is not underperforming by using projected season stats as your support that have him ending up with 82 catches, 716 yards, and 2 touchdowns.

With someone trying to make that argument I think it’s natural to lead someone to believe that the person is disagreeable overall and not just disagreeing on this point. Sure, I could be wrong, but hopefully you see where I’m coming from.

We're all Pats fans and the reality is that our team was better yesterday than it was today. Was Collins such a malcontent that it forced BB's hand? That very well could be the case but it's still a shame that things escalated to the point where the Pats coaches and Collins could no longer co-exist.

*Figures calculated using taking his 39 game total over the three seasons, getting the per game average, and expanding to 16 games.

Not saying "Collins Sucks" at all - just presenting this FYI :

Collins has played 1,109 snaps and missed 387 snaps in the regular season since the 2015 opener. There was virtually no difference in the opposing quarterbacks' Total QBR scores when Collins was on the field (53.8) compared with when he was off it (54.6). The Patriots' opponents actually fared better with Collins on the field across a range of categories: yards per play, yards per rush, yards per pass attempt and third-down conversion rate.

Why Collins trade makes sense for Patriots

Interesting. Just more proof that Hightower has been far more valuable for the defense than Collins. Our defense was pretty poor without him last year, and improved significantly when he returned from injury.

Regardless of how I feel about Collins himself - it's clear Bill is sending a message about the defense's performance this year so far - which is good. Bill's not happy and that makes me happy.

I expect us to once again hold our breaths with this defense and hope the offense can execute come the playoffs. What else's new.

You've been whining about the defense all year - how much worse can it get...

Y'all realize that most likely the Pats will send a higher draft pick to the Eagles for Eric Rowe, than they will get from Cleveland for Jaime Collins......

Think about that for a second....

I think as a quick generalization, we as fans probably see football similar to other sports where you can trade away your prospect capital for an impact rental player. For example, the prospects that the Cubs and Indians traded for Chapman and Miller respectively. I guess it can work for other sports because you have significantly smaller rosters than football, and no salary cap.

Like many fans, I think we can win the SB this year. At the same time, I thought we were in a better situation last year when we started 10-0. Keeping Jones and Collins 'should' give us the best chance to win. Injuries and bad luck are still more influential to the teams success than either of those two players. I think most of us fans would be willing to mortgage the future to increase our odds of winning it all this year, but Belichick will never do that, and that is why we keep winning.

I think Belichick values all 53 spots on the roster. Star players and playmakers are necessary, but there is no way he was going to pay two linebackers $25+ million a year. I feel disappointed that both Jones and now Collins are not part of the team, as the team 'should' be better with both of them on it, but at the same time, moves like these ARE the reason why the team has been consistently successful for the past 15+ years.

I think Belichick would rather have a Ted Bruschi over a Jamie Collins any day of the week even though Collins is probably the more gifted and athletic player.

Jerod Mayo who was an integral part of our linebacking corps,a captain of the interior defense and a leading tackler who was injured and out for the season in week 6 back in 2014 - we all know that season ended with another Super Bowl championship without him all those weeks - while you can't compare Mayo and Collins directly in terms of talent,we all know this team has lost big pieces of the puzzle before and won it all.

Next season this team will have to get some serious depth at Linebacker, but for now I think this team is good enough (sans Collins) to win it all again, remember the biggest drop off in talent this team truly has is from the #1 QB to the #2 QB..the other positions are not as dire and not as far down from the top starting talent as it appears, despite how some feel right now, this team will continue to win and produce - as Aaron Rodgers once said to his fans "just R-E-L-A-X".

Teddy Bruschi is not walking through that door.

Well clearly Bill thought the defense wasn't performing up to his standards, despite what our many armchair coaches on this board have said.

Is there a long list of people who actually said that the defense was performing at peak efficiency and its highest level?

Collins was a playmaker, but wildly inconsistent.....he makes some astounding physical plays, but then get completely embarrassed by the owen danielses of the world

No Joe Thomas or Joe Haden?:(

I don't think people would be this freaked out if JC went on IR.

It sux, the compensation sux, but we still the best in the league.

Y'all realize that most likely the Pats will send a higher draft pick to the Eagles for Eric Rowe, than they will get from Cleveland for Jaime Collins......

Think about that for a second....
Yes, they decided that three cheap seasons of Rowe are worth more than half a season of Collins. I don't see anything wrong with that.

No, but I believe there were a few who very content with the defense and refused to acknowledge there were areas that could have been improved on. The defense has played well but Bill doesn't seem to be content with that.

I seriously think you're failing to take into account how much deeper the offense is in terms of receiving weapons this year. For example, Bennett has 31 catches. What did our second TE average over the past three years? There are four viable WR options, 2 viable TE options and at least one viable RB option for catching the ball. I think its much more about Brady having more options and not having to go to JE every single time he needs a play than it is JE underperforming.

Rowe's on a rookie contract until the end of the 2018-19 season. Collins is a free agent after this season and is looking at a contract worth anywhere from $11m to $15m per year.

Belichick on WEEI: We did what was best for the team.

Of course.

Obviously Bill knows what he's doing...

That said, looking from the outside all I see is the needless loss of an impact player as we gear up for a SB run. All it takes is a Hightower injury now, and for a coach that preaches depth, it makes this trade even more surprising.

A first rounder I wouldn't be too disappointed with, but for a mediocre 3rd round pick in the future that may or may not even make the roster... only time will tell!
