4th and 7 at the opponents 15 yard line or so. Receiver catches the ball 5 yards short of line to gain and goes out of bounds on his own without trying to get the first down.. No situational awareness
The video does not evidence what everyone is talking about here. He did not go out of bounds "on his own" at all. He was simply knocked out of bounds while he was trying to turn the corner. He even lowered his right shoulder as he was trying to turn the corner.
Didn't that false start by the OT Lukayus McNeil make it 4th and 12? Regardless, the reciever should've fought for the 1st down in that situation smdh4th and 7 at the opponents 15 yard line or so. I think that's exactly it. He thought he got the 1st down so he let himself be tackled out of bounds instead of cutting towards the middle and fighting like heck for every yard. Hey, it's teenagers and young 20-somethings playing football. You'll see mistakes like that. Just look at Tennessee-Georgia. 20 yards of penalties against the Bulldogs gave Tennesee the chance to throw a Hail Mary. But what are the odds they complete a Hail Mary, ya know? What the **** kind of playcall is that? 4th and 12 and you dump it off 3 yards past the LOS and expect the kid to make up the rest? Once the outside DB switches and lets his man go, the play is pretty much dead unless the receiver can juke the guy or carry him 4 to 5 yards. The throw is also a bit of a floater, and doesn't hit him in stride, so he has to turn, wait for it, giving the DB time to square him up. But it's entirely this kid's fault today, and that's not fair.
Although one thing I read this morning is that there were no chains on that side, so it seemed like he didn't know where the 1st down marker was. Even after getting knocked out of bounds, he signals for a first down. So maybe it is entirely his fault. I don't know.
