OT: All 14 draft picks make Browns 53

Bb started street free agents in 2000. He cleaned house and brought in no "savvy veteran role players". He did that in 2001.
In 2000 he took over a mediocre team that was headed for a long run of mediocrity and gutted it.

Are you really saying that if BB had kept:
Kgh instead of ebner
Lucien instead of harbor
Leblanc instead of King
Any rookie instead of Cameron Fleming
That he would have been giving up on the season by keeping 14 rookies?
He kept 10.

I would have dropped Richards 2nd round pick or not for KGH and Elandon Roberts for Leblanc.

Not only did the Browns keep all their draft picks, but they picked up 5 guys off waivers..

That's a helluva roster turnover in one season.
If any roster ever needed turning over......

I would have dropped Richards 2nd round pick or not for KGH and Elandon Roberts for Leblanc.
End of the bench guys have more to do with role than complete package.
Neither of those guys looked like more than fringe journeymen to me

But the Patriots have a philosophy of winning now. When BB first arrived he overhauled the roster the first year or two essentially " blowing it up". . Now there are 15-16 different players every year but look at how many players on the 2001 team were there pre BB. Not many as he had to change the roster and create a culture of winning.

He did just the opposite. He had to choose who to resign and who to let go. He resigned Troy Brown and Bruschi and cut Rucci, Lane and some other veteran

Of course the team changed over naturally due to Grier's incompetence at drafting, but he kept veterans, even high priced ones like Ty Law and and McGinest and Milloy and added smart free agents.

Their philosophy is win now, win next year and every year after that. Pretty good if you can pull it off.

They did not fill up the lineup with rookies at all.

When I said BB "blew the team up" I didn't mean that he relied solely on rookies. Look at all the FAs he brought it, from 2000-01,
Cox, Phifer, Ken Walter, David Patten, Wiggens, Vrabel, Marc Edwards, Larry Izzo, Otis Smith,Marty Moore, in addition to the rookies changed the culture. He didn't do it with rookies alone and I did not mean to imply that. It was rookies with lots of free agents, not all of whom worked out but it was clean out the dregs time and replace them with UDFAs, FA and rookies... Cleveland is starting with the rookies and it wouldn't shock me if they start phase 2 next year signing lots of free agents...

He intentionally kept a core of excellent defensive players, plus Troy Brown. Bobby Grier blew it up. He tried to patch it together until they could get a few drafts under their belt. Did such a good job, they won in year two.

No offense, but I think you're going to a lot of effort to make a calculated approach under bad circumstances, seem like a blow it up approach of a bad team.

The Browns are near and dear to me as they were my favorite NFL team before to the AFL started up..

RG III will be the starting QB, that might be an improvement.. time will tell. When Josh Gordon, who gets to practice with his team during his suspension, comes back that will also be an improvement.

Is Hue Jackson a JAG or a BB waiting to happen?? He does not invite confidence.

When you look at their depth chart, they only list 3 rookies as starters.. the rest are mixed in and may play less prominent roles..

It wasn't just the 14 draftees that made it. If I read the article right, there were 2 UDFA's that made the roster as well. So 16 rookies total. I get wanting to change the culture, but like someone else pointed out, that's an expansion level team really. I hope Hue Jackson is given the years he's going to need to turn that roster into a competitive one.

All 14 players the Browns drafted this year are on the 53-man roster, an impressive indication that the team didn’t whiff on any of those picks. Two undrafted free agents also made the roster, meaning 30 percent of the Browns’ players are rookies.

One minor point: it is 17 rookies, not 14. Fourteen was the number of draft picks.

Cleveland Browns | Player Roster

Per the team's website, this is Browns' current roster, based on NFL experience:
17 rookies
2 players w/1-year experience
9 with 2-years experience
4 with 3-years
8 with 4-years
13 with 5 or more years experience

Per Pro Football Reference, when you look at how their players entered the league it breaks down like this:
13 drafted by Browns in 2016
8 drafted by Browns in 2015
2 drafted by Browns in 2014
1 drafted by Browns in 2013 (suspended, see below)
2 drafted by Browns in 2012 (including the suspended Josh Brown)
1 drafted by Browns in 2011 (Joe Haden)
1 drafted by Browns in 2007 (Joe Thomas)

The rest are undrafted free agents or players originally drafted by another team.

The only survivor of the 2013 draft is Armonty Bryant, a 7th round pick with two career starts - who is suspended for the first four games of the season. At least the pair from 2014 are starters: LG Joel Bitonio and ILB Christian Kirksey.

Yeah, it's pretty clear that Cleveland is getting a moneyball style overhaul. Reading more into it than that, at least at this early point in time, makes no real sense.

Absoutely. Couple that with 11 plus picks next year ( 2 firsts-Philly/Wentz) an extra third, fifth, seventh and a few likely comps and they are well set to wheel and deal next year or build through the draft long term.

Of course he kept the top players but he totally cleaned house and brought in his kind of guys.

I guess we're gonna see how good they are at picking the groceries...

They are starting over with "their guys". Bb did the same thing and won a SB in year 2.
The 2000 team was full of castoffs, rookies and street fre agents surrounding a core that bought in.
BB knew and had established relationships with a lot of the veterans already on the patriots from his coordinator days, so he knew what he had in guys like Bledsoe, Bruschi, Terry Glenn, Ted Johnson, Troy Brown, Vinatieri, Milloy, Law and McGinest. Some of those guys didn't last, while others obviously did, but that was a solid veteran core to inherit. BB also brought over some more core veterans from the Jets like Otis Smith, Anthony Pleasant, Bobby Hamilton, and Roman Phifer who played key roles.

The 2001 Patriots team chemistry was more defined by the veterans than it was by draft picks or castoff free agents. (Edit: Tom Brady would be a massive exception)

The Browns, by contrast, appear to be relying almost exclusively on the draft and "blowing up" their veteran core.

Not surprised to see a team like CLE in a rebuilding phase keep 16-17 rookies, but I was surprised to hear that the Seattle Seahawks kept 15 on their 53 man roster.

9 Rookies made the Patriots 53 this year.. 3 of the 8 players on the PS are rookies..

This seems the norm for NE Patriots.. one thing we do know is that BB will tweek this roster throughout the season.
