Patriots 9/3 53-man roster cuts thread

Except at RB and OL, and the health at WR is very, Very VERY shaky.

As a matter of fact, the personnel on offense is the Least talented of the Brady era.

O Captain my Captain....You seem to not recall 01-06.

With the exception of 04, getting 24 points back then was like drawing blood out of a stone.

Wow u really r a Debbie Downer. At least you're from NC which means I probably won't hear u at the games yelling at me to "SIT DOWN"

I'm not from NC. I'm from a town 15 min from foxboro I have lived there my entire life. i am just frustrated with the WR position based on lack of depth, injury history, and young talent. Fair enough?

Well too many threads, too many things to read, I had a busy day so I'll try to keep up later.

The only thing I'll say for now is that this roster cut reflects the game plan for week 1. That's why more TE's and a short list of receivers. If Jimmy gets pass happy (bombs) against Arizona's defense they will intercept him like a lot. That can mess his confidence and is gonna be a field day for the ****ing press if he throws 3 picks. It's gonna be an ugly game, defense up front and smash mouth football with a lot of dumps to TE's.

I expect a lot of moves after week 1 and during the whole Brady absence. We will need to improve RB and WR. The roster cuts seems to have been a rich one this year, BB will tweak this roster a lot.

Looking at the offense, I would say this is probably the 3rd most talented offense we've ever fielded after the two years Moss and Welker were here at the same time.

Two top 5 tight ends, plus tremendous upside in Derby

Edelman, Amendola, Hogan, not world beaters, but just try and stop all 3 of them at the same time...no way...plus some upside in Mitchel to potentially stretch the field.

DJ Foster is a bit of an uknown, but I bet he turns out awesome, and with Lewis coming back in October...

This is the type of team most QB's would dream to play onow. Especially Brady's Pats, that thrive on quick and intelligent guys that get open fast and can make YAC.

I'm super excited about this team...this is a SB caliber offense and defense. The best we've had in 6 or so years.

I don't understand the panic about the WRs. Dobson, who everyone hated was cut. Martin a jag was cut. Harper, a jag was cut. Edelman, Amendola and Hogan are proven productive receivers and Malcolm Mitchell looks like Brandon Lloyd with set of balls. We have 3 tight ends who are effective from the slot and out wide and two running backs who can do the same. Would keeping Dobson or Martin make any real difference?

The league was overall a bit more run-heavy back then than it is today, so scoring was probably down overall also.

Quick research, thanks to Football Statistics and History | The Football Database, shows that during
the years 2001 - 2006:

Year - AFC rank - NFL rank
01…….3rd/23.2 ppg……..6th
02……5th/23.8……………10th
03……6th/21.75…………..12th
04……4th/27.3……………..4th
05……7th/23.7……………10th
06……3rd/24.0…………….7th

So points were indeed harder to come by during those seasons, but that was the case throughout the league anyway. And the Pats still scored more points than over half of the league did in each of those seasons, and in 3/6 of those seasons a lot more than over half of the league.

My contention, that this is one of the worst, if not the worst, OLs and RB groups, and the most fragile
WR groups in the league, still stands.

The two surprise cuts for me so far are Hill and Martin. Kind of thin on the WR front now, especially with Amendola's health uncertain.

Who is Hill??

The team has by far the best receiving group of TEs they have ever had. Even Harbor can catch the ball. Given than and DJ Foster and White will be catching balls I think the WRs will be suitable. Hopefully they can all just stay healthy.

Exaclty why we need strong practice squad receiver.

Grissom AND Johnson? With all the impending FA's next year? Wow.

Trey Flowers outplayed both of them, combined. Flowers looks like he'll be pushing for a starting spot next season. Do you really think that the Pats will wait until the end of the season to give the likes of Sheard, Hightower and Collins extensions? I don't. Unless something goes horribly wrong in negotiations, I expect the Pats to have all 3 and Butler signed by the end of the year.

The track record of where, basically, players are drafted in comparison to where they were thought to be going is easy to see, and the "media" generally does a pretty good job with it. People who argue against this are people who are trying to defend bad picks, because they have no problem cheering the "steals".

No. The problem is people like you who define "bad pick" as taking a player outside where the media generally things a player could go regardless of how they end up performing on the field.

You have been one of the MANY who have bashed BB on the picks of players like Ryan and Harmon. You whined and said "oh, they were taken way ahead of their projection". Yet, Ryan has turned into a bonifide #2 CB and Harmon would be a starting safety on many teams.

So, this idea that the media projecting where players should be drafted (in terms of rounds) is somehow indicative of anything is just laughable.

If you or Captain Stone have half of the talent evaluation skills that that you want others to believe you have, you'd both be actual scouts and not speaking on some message board.

Is everyone satisfied with the WR department? I know we use TEs heavily but to me it seems like Danny and Julian are both not 100% to begin the season, Mitchell is injured, so not sure about his return. So the only healthy WR we have is a poor man's Edelman, Chris Hogan.

Hogan is not a "Poor Man's Edelman". They are different types of players. Hogan is closer to David Givens with more agility than he is to Edelman.

Please name the teams that had more talent on offense than :
Gronkowski, Bennett, Edelman, Hogan, Blount, White. And that isn't including Mitchell, Derby, and Foster. All 3 of whom are extremely talented.

Dobson's gone, man.

I know its been a tough day. I'm big on homegrown talent. Looks like I will now have to root heavily for Malcolm Mitchell to succeed
