Chandler Jones' trade value?

Gresh v. Giardi

With huge contracts being handed out to defensive ends, Mike Giardi suggests it might be the right time to shop Chandler Jones.

Andy Gresh says it’s dangerous to make a deal like that because he doesn’t believe there’s a player available that can replace Jones.

Giardi: Time is now for Patriots to shop Jones

The way that this Defense is coming together, I believe that there is a distinct Possibility that he's about to launch a Career Year ~ 18 Sacks or something crazy like that ~ and that, should we choose to do so, we could get a King's Ransom for'is Services a Year from now as a Tag & Trade...just as with Jared Allen.

Nice addition to the conversation, OTG. Hadn't seen that possibility mentioned before, and it is a worthy one.

Jones is going to jump out to 10 sacks in 8 games and then fall off a cliff and collect another 4 over the rest of the season.
Every DE is streaky with sacks. That's the NFL.
12 sacks is a good season.

I can get behind the "Chandler is third behind HT & Collins" argument. I can also back the ppl that suggest Jones might need to go, eventually, to get the other two signed long-term.

Just doesn't seem the compensation for trading Jones would be anywhere equal to what he could provide in 2016... He isn't the greatest DE ever to play, but he is easily better than anything they have/would fetch. And 2016 should be a year NE has an excellent chance of doing something special.

I'd move him if someone offered lots - including a future first rounder, but is that realistic ? If not, keep and play.

I wouldn't trade him for anything less than a 2nd as the highest pick. So I could part with him for say a 2nd and a 6th. The question is: Why would any team want to do that? Jones is going to be a UFA next year. So the GM of the trading team would not only have to give up multiple picks (one of them high) in theory, but would also have to either A) sign him to a massive contract the following season or B) franchise tag him for top dollar until he'd have to back up the Brinks truck. I just don't see why any team would be willing to do that. So the Pats may as well keep him and deal with his loss next season unless there is a team/GM dumb enough to do the above.

That move would only make sense for me if they had reached a deal with Mario Willians for let's say 2 years 15 Million, so they would pay less than they would pay for CJ this year and get a better player in a more reasonable contract including 2017. So I moved on from this discussion, it won't happen unless some GM go full ****** to get the priority for CJ services.

Terrible idea. Give up a talented pass rushing DE to moved up 1 round, in the draft. They already lost Hicks and now people want to weaken the DL even more. The Parrots have a good shot at winning the AFC as things currently stand and making the defense weaker to move up 30 picks in the 2017 draft makes no sense. Even if they lose Jones they get a compensatory pick, most likely a 3rd, so, it's better to get 20 games out of him and a 3rd than no games and a 2nd. I would rather keep him and maximize their chance fora Lombardi.

Without someone to replace him, we're back to relying on two DE's for 95% of the snaps, only this time it's a Rob Ninkovich (two years older) and Sheard. I like what Sheard did last year, but you have to be careful when extrapolating. He may not have been nearly as effective if he didn't get the breathers he got.

Keep Jones. This is a championship caliber team, you need to keep your best players unless finances force your hand.

I agree that it is highly unlikely that he will be traded for draft picks. But I think it is also pretty clear that he will demand a contract like Olivier Vernon just got and the Patriots are not going to pay that.
So the question is, are you satisfied one more year and a third round comp pick. Considering that he was not only a first round pick, but they even traded up for him, I would try to get as much value for him as possible. He may not get traded for draft picks only, but I think that there are teams out there in need of a DE that would be willing to swap players (Browns Josh Gordon/ Rams Tavon Austin).
They may not be able to replace his production with one player, but with Sheard, Grissom and potentially Long, the pass rush shouldn't suffer much. And for the DT, this draft class might be bad for drafting WRs, but there are a lot of good DTs available. So BB might do what he does best and draft another DT

His value is really one of the $Xm questions, isn't it?

  1. Is Cleveland willing to make some big moves (Jones + JAG for #33 + Gordon + ____)?
  2. Is there someone else who's willing to pony up in order to keep Jones off the market?
  3. Will N.E. work out extensions for all 3 of the 'big' players up for next year (Jones/Hightower/Collins)?
  4. Would N.E. try slapping the tag on one of the 3 while working out deals for the other 2?
  5. With Butler needing a deal too, which, if any, of the 4, are they thinking of letting go?

It seems to me that we'd have to know the answers to at least most of those questions, along with knowing the level of crazy he's going to be at with regards to his contract demands, before we could determine both Jones' trade value and whether a trade is even an option at this point.

belichick tends to act a year before it's too late. He did it with mankins just 2 years ago. I can see him moving jones but only for the right price.

There are a number of things to consider.

#1 Nink is getting older and you will need to find someone to replace him soon. If you trade Jones and he only has 2 starters years left including this one you might have a hole on one side of DE (assuming you can keep Sheard and not have 2 holes).

#2 If you trade him what do you get back? I would assume if we just lose him as a FA we get a compensatory 4th at worst. To miss out on him this year I want more than just moving up 1 round. It would need to be a reasonably high 2nd before i think it is worth it.

#3 The young guys are unproven. How sure of Flowers and Grissom are you?

#4 This could very well be our last very good chance with Brady before 2017 FA hits and we have a lot of guys up. Do we want to build for the future now?

Personally I don't think any team gives up what we want. Now if we were the Rams or some other rebuilding team I would be more open to just acquiring value but we are a contender with the SB champ having just lost their starting QB and back up so now the path this year at this point seems very reasonable.

Here is what I want for Jones. Either a high 2nd this year or a 3rd and a player this year.

Either of those 2 things offer possible instant impact to off set the loss as well as build for the future and do not hurt your chances too much this year.

So for option one I am thinking 46 or higher and we get another pass rusher (we make this trade draft day in this case to target 1 specific guy)

For option two a 3rd and a player. The player is probably a vet DE kind of like Nink and you use your 3rd to try to get a young development pass rusher by either drafting or trading up.

Either way you use whatever you get to try to fill your most immediate need which is now DE after you trade Jones.

Or you just keep him and sign him.

They can't sign Jones, Collins, Butler, or Hightower, too expensive. They should trade Jones to Detroit for Calvin Johnson, Collins to Cleveland for Josh Gordon, Butler to Jacksonville for Justin Blackmon, and Hightower and the Rams fo Tavon Austin. Can you imagine how sick that offense would be????? They could line up CJ and JE11 wide right, DA and TA in the slot, CH and JG wide left, and AD and JB at flanker with Gronk as the flex TE. Brady would have 9 receivers to choose from, and they can't double them all!!!!!!!!! Throw in DL and JD receiving out of the backfield and Brady would have 11 weapons at his disposal. They would be unstoppable, they would score 1,000 points and wouldn't need a defense.

Do it BB

Article just came out on CSN...time to trade is now. Worth a lot to a bunch of teams plus keeping him and DH and Collins seems unrealistic
