Comp picks: Pats get a 3rd rounder and three 6th rounders

Mike Reiss ?@MikeReiss 3m3 minutes ago

Patriots awarded four compensatory draft picks today -- 3rd round, 96th overall; 6th round, 208th; 6th round, 214th; 6th round, 221st.

Predictions were 3-5-6-7, so it's almost a wash (down on 5, up on 7).

It's too bad comp picks can't be traded yet. That would give the Pats some nice ammo to move around in the draft if they saw fit. But still a nice haul.

The picks help by giving them the leeway to use their original picks to package and move up. I'd like to see them package their 2nd and 3rd to get inside 50 in the draft.

No seventh round comp picks this year which is strange. Presumably it reflects the cost of FA contracts nowadays. Apparently 3m p/y is the minimum needed for a comp pick in todays market.

Not quite. There's a limit on the # awarded, and there were just an unusually big number this year.

I realise that, but do you think that dynamic will change from now on? Bigger FA contracts will be the norm, not the exception.

Nice, that third rounder should have a shot at netting a useful player, and the 6s are just more opportunities to take flyers on guys like Roberts, Butler, and Edelman. They'll probably all end up amounting to nothing, but when you have three of them the shot of one yielding actual production is pretty good. Plus, comp picks can be traded now can't they?

They can't be traded this year. That's starts next year.

Sure glad this was only a dream:

NFL to Award Comp Pick to Jets for Signing Darelle Revis

New York (AP) - NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell announced today that rather than award the New England Patriots a 3rd-round draft pick as compensation for losing free agent cornerback Darelle Revis, he would instead award the pick to the New York Jets.

"In light of the fact that the Patriots defense was actually better in 2015 than in 2014, it would set a bad precedent to provide any additional compensation to them. On the other hand, the Jets have handicapped themselves by giving $39 million in guaranteed money to a player who is in decline and may not be able to help them win in the future. As a result, we think it is only fair that the compensatory pick be awarded to the Jets, rather than the Patriots. In addition, the Patriots have been warned that in the future, any transactions between the two teams must be "fair and equitable" for both sides. I have appointed Mike Kensil to review each of these transactions in the future to ensure that Patriots do not take unfair advantage of the New York Jets' ownership, front office, or coaching staff. This move is necessary to ensure competitive balance within the league."
