Patriots signed Tom Brady to a two-year extension through 2019

On the flip side, I don't think anyone has ever taken staying a starting QB as seriously as Brady has, and the previous generation of QBs didn't have modern sports medicine to help them.
Manning wanted it so bad he threw his wife under the bus.

this guy?

Better than these guys...

This makes my decade.

I'm assuming the terms of the deal are "cap friendly" which allow the team to handle the more pressing contractual needs they they currently face (Collins, High, Jones and Malcolm). Gotta see the fine print.

I'm also assuming that the team believes Tom body is in excellent shape without any long term nagging injuries that would accelerate any erosion to his health if he would suffer a major injury (See Peyton- neck. Multiple concussions, etc.)

I'm also assuming that they have concluded that his level of play is and will continue to be elite or above average enough to warrant the contract OR be digestible in a trade by another team.

No clue how this impacts Jimmy G but.....oh well. Thats life of a backup Qb. Its reasonable for Jimmy to ask for a trade but clearly that's not his call.

Familiarize yourself with Kevin Hogan
I could get behind that pick. Hogan needs a little work but he's a hard worker and is intelligent, he would be a prime candidate to spend a few years behind Brady. I wonder where they would pick him - the fifth maybe?

I think Garoppolo can really be a quality starter for a decent team. I hope the Pats trade him somewhere with a good opportunity if they do trade him.

Yea my gut tells me Jimmy G might want to call ReMax.

It is obvious that Brady does not share opinions of Bob Kraft with the fellowship of the miserable

The greatest player of all time, who has lead us to AFCCGs like 70% of the time and SBs about 40% of the time, who overcame tons of injuries and a **** offensive line to get us in position to get to another SB last year, signs what will doubtlessly be a team-friendly deal to help our cap situation and keep him in a Pats uni for 20 years and....people say this is bittersweet?

Goddamn I hate you all.

The best thing about this news is that it broke you away from your Palen romance novel or whatever the hel that was.

Jimmy G is living out the duration of his rookie deal......most likely here......getting any of the vet backups would cost more

now if someone came sniffing about with a 2nd rounder, would have to look at it

The value of a plant based diet.. I think it would be wise to keep Jimmy G. sign him to a simultaneous extension and back load it.. not a lot of quality QB's out there.

I agree. If they send him they absolutely need a solid backup in his place and a top two round pick

Why do people forget the 1st half of the season when he was on pace to break pretty much every single season passing record and then the team starting getting ravaged by injuries, including the OL...

I agree with this. However some young stud lineman (especially tackle(s)) would do wonders.

Reiss added this about ten minutes ago. Normally, I'd think it was too trivial to post, but, since we have no other "real" information beyond the initial report, I thought I'd pass it along.

"The deal with Brady is not yet signed and may not be for a little while, sources said."

Probably for salary/cap purposes. Maybe Miguel can shed light on why there is an actual reason.

Photo some possible deal parameters for Brady. Used 1m as 2016 salary for rounding purposes. Minimum salary = $985,000.

Yep. He's now signed for 4 years, that's a standard length of a non short term deal. 4 years is "the future", at some point we'll move JG and draft another developmental replacement.

Or maybe we'll just keep JG. If Brady retires at the end of 2019, JG will be 28 years old. That's a little late to be taking over the QB spot, but it's not bad. He will have learned a ton and will be ready to go physically. If I'm JG, I'm liking that position.

Perhaps a signing bonus now would count for the 2015 league year, when they want it to first hit the 2016 league year? Since Miguel said they had less than <$2M in 2015 cap space which was carried over, it could be possible. Otherwise I'm at a loss.

Can't believe some of you aren't happy about this... This is best news of 2016 so far!!!!

Bittersweet. Brady will pass all of Manning's lame regular season records in a Patriots uniform (also 20 seasons with one team is awesome) but IMO Jimmy G has franchise QB caliber traits that will be hard to find in other 2nd-3rd round QBs in the upcoming years. He was a rare case as a talented FCS QB that was available in the late 2nd round.

Just hope the team has some plan for the Brady successor.

For now, trade Jimmy G to the highest bidder and draft Hogan in rds 3-5.

Brady very nearly won MVP this year, how is he the past? I'm not going to project a downside for Brady until we see it. People here have been in the business of saying he's in decline or about to start declining for the past 7-8 years.

I think the wiser call is to know what you have, realize we've been inhumanly lucky and that we'll never get a player like this again, and ride it out for as long as it lasts. Eventually he will decline, to the point that replacing him will become a valid discussion. But it hasn't happened yet, and it's shown no signs of happening in the next couple years. And until you see it starting to happen, I don't think you can reasonably plan on a successor. Best you can do is just periodically draft guys to be cheap backup talent that can be developed and potentially succeed Brady. But if you try to force that, you'll in all likelihood just end up replacing a still-awesome Brady with a much ****tier QB, who even in his prime won't be as good as an in-his-40s Brady.
