Patriots signed Tom Brady to a two-year extension through 2019

Bittersweet. Brady will pass all of Manning's lame regular season records in a Patriots uniform (also 20 seasons with one team is awesome) but IMO Jimmy G has franchise QB caliber traits that will be hard to find in other 2nd-3rd round QBs in the upcoming years. He was a rare case as a talented FCS QB that was available in the late 2nd round.

Just hope the team has some plan for the Brady successor.

For now, trade Jimmy G to the highest bidder and draft Hogan in rds 3-5.

I can't tell if people are disagreeing for saying Garoppolo "has franchise QB caliber traits that will be hard to find in 2-3 rounds in coming years" - OR - for saying they should trade Garoppolo and draft Hogan.

Have any #s come out yet? I am sure the deal is "team friendly" but everyone is acting like this was a massive coup.. what if the deal is another 2 years at the current clip..

I am not saying this is a bad thing... but still trying to figure out how good this news is for pats fans.

The "coup" is that Brady will be with the Patriots the next four years. You know, the G.O.A.T.

Brady will certainly get a very big signing bonus and reduce his cap hit for this year. That's all we know.

Curran's take:
Curran: Five thoughts on Brady's contract extension

I actually never thought about the impact of Kraft folding to Goodell in May on Brady agreeing to a new extension. It sure sounds possible that Brady could have felt a bit betrayed by it. Thank goodness it didn't matter in the end - but the fact it could have had an impact made Kraft's decision even more egregious.

We certainly don't know the private conversations that took place between those three. Brady may have been livid and cooled down or because they have a solid relationship that is built on trust they talked it through and were mature, professional and understanding of each other's situation.

One day it would make a great book.

Rex Ryan be like:

This could be long enough Rex gets fired, then hired in Miami.

Not with Tannenbaum down there. Those two drove what success they had with Mangini's personnel into the ground.

Why do people forget the 1st half of the season when he was on pace to break pretty much every single season passing record and then the team starting getting ravaged by injuries, including the OL...

I think BB agrees with me though. He fired the OL coach and brought Dante back.

Why do people forget that the Patriots OL couldn't deal with the snap count in AFC Championship game? The snap count. The SNAP COUNT. College offensive linemen can move effectively on multiple silent counts.

They had one important OL who could not play - Nate Solder. The Broncos had one important OL who could not play - Ryan Clady. Same position - LT.

Also Brady was getting hit at a higher rate than any previous year in his career during those first 10 games, its just that they were able to overcome it.

We are betting against the entire history of the NFL. Brady is one of a kind, but the fact remains that there has only been two QBs to start and play at a high level age 39+: Favre and Moon.

In two seasons Manning went from 55 TD passes to the worst QB in the league. QB declines are usually rapid.

Then again, Brady could defy the odds again and play until he is 45. Who the heck knows. I just hope they find another good developmental QB in the meantime.

It sounds like they're betting on Brady more than they are against the history of the NFL. I'll take that bet.

I don't know where Curran came up with the idea that BB might be mad at Brady for the "equipment swapping" and autographs for staff. That was a real , or moment for me.

As many if us have said for quite awhile, there is absolutely ZERO reason to trade our solid backup quarterback. When you're quarterback the oldest position player in the NFL (or 2nd or 3rd), such a trade borders is negligence and borders on malfeasance.

Do we know the numbers yet, any cap savings? Awesome news btw...

That's simply not true. You may think that the reason(s) to keep him outweigh the reason(s) to move him, but to say that there is ZERO reason to trade him is to state an obvious falsehood.

Nonsense

No news.

I suspect that we will only save a couple of million, although theoretically the savings could be as much as $8M (with no signing bonus, minimum 2016 salary, with full guaranteed numbers from 2017 through 2019.

It's like crack. I couldn't stop reading and had to force myself to step away.

Since I wasn't around then I decided to take some time and read as much as I could. It was very interesting reading a two month long (1000+ post) thread from 2008-2009.

- There really wasn't anyone pushing for the Pats to trade Brady except for one guy, siverly2006.
- There was a lot of disagreement over the thought of entertaining the idea of it though.
- A couple of posters, Alk and The Razor were looking at the team aspect of what Brady could bring, mostly for the defense.
- A couple more, Grizzafted and aluminum seats, were pretty much taking a lot of heat for even trying to discuss the idea.
- Then there was JSn who seemed to be a little worried about the injury factor re Brady's return.
- cupofjoe1962 was hoping for a Herschel Walker type trade.

Then there were two predictions for the future that caught my eye;
- spacecrime thought that someone would replace Brady in 5-6 years. Little did he know.
- jeffbiologist didn't think that Brady was the type of guy that would set up roots here, being a west coast guy and all.

All in all it wasn't as bad a thread as it was described and it was a heck of a lot of fun to go through after the fact.

It is obvious that Brady does not share opinions of Bob Kraft with the fellowship of the miserable
Don't worry, they'll continue with there Brady secretly hates Kraft because bend-over Bob threw him under the bus blah, blah, blah conspiracy theories. So much evidence of that ya know.

If someone offered a top 30 draft pick I would say that would be a really good reason.

Lmao........he doesn't share the opinion of those who wanted to trade him in 2014 either.
