$6.5m
+$7m- Decline Mayo Option
+$3.7m Cut Cannon
+ $2.6m Cut LaFell
+ $2m Cut Chandler
+$3m Amendola restructure (just guessing)

$24.8m

Cutting LaFell to save $2.6M seems counterproductive, since if he's even remotely healthy he'll be better than a WR signed to replace him for around that amount. Otherwise I agree. Pats should have plenty of money to work with, and priority one is locking up their own young talent.

EDITED

You do not use NET numbers so each set of savings should be reduced by $600K.
Miguel's proposed deal for Amendola would save $500K less than you guess.
So, the total is about $3M less.

Also, there is no particular reason to make any cuts, unless the money is needed to sign a replacement.
Starting with $13M after not picking up Mayo is plenty to start with.

You could maybe make a case for Chandler (though I'd find it hard to do), but cutting Cannon is an absolute no-brainer. If you can save $3.7M by cutting your fourth tackle who you just successfully upgraded from by signing off of someone else's PS, you do it.

As we discussed earlier during the season (and/or during the preseason), the Patriots will have plenty of money to spend.

Getting $7m from the Mayo situation opens things up right away. Then, possible approximate cap money increases from the following potential 'non-returnees'*:

Cannon - $3.6m
Chandler - $2m
Branch - $2.4m
Kline - $1.5m
Freeny - $1.5m
Dobson - $0.8m

Along with restructures/extensions for

Hightower
Jones

could really open up some space, allowing for Collins getting an extension as well as signings such as those I've noted in another thread, and the usual FA barrel bottom scrapings.

*I'm not saying that any/all of the listed people should/should not be cut loose. I'm just noting that they would be understandable cuts that opened cap space.

Wasn;t it the year before last we had a ton..and we made really no moves and everyone here was ready to burn them at the stake? Pretty sure this was recently

They had about $15m going into '13 FA before re-signing Vollmer, Talib, Edelman and Arrington

Much of the scorn that year was Welker and Woodhead not being re-signed and to a lesser extent cutting Lloyd (who had a solid year) and not signing an adequate replacement.

Which in hindsight the guys that ended up replacing those guys contributed to a SB... Ya I know LaFell wasn't signed until a year later but still

Also the money they didn't spend allowed them to roll it over into '14 which allowed them to get Revis and Browner

Cannon is our #3 OT. Yes, let's cut him without having someone to take over.
Branch is one of our best DTs. You've hated him since he signed here.
Freeny is more important now with the retirement of Mayo. Cutting him hurt this team severely.
The Pats aren't going to cut Dobson until TC unless he doesn't participate in the off-season program and then shows up out of shape.

Maybe they do. Ladrian Waddle is a RFA which means an original tender would make his salary $1.5m for '16.

I think at this point I might be ok with Waddle at $1.5m and drafting Vollmer's eventual replacement than Cannon playing at a $4.7m cap hit.

Don't forget about guys that we have that need to be taken of. Malcolm Butler at $600 is criminal. Pro Bowl (and well deserved) CB's are a rare commodity.

That dude needs a serious raise now because if he matches last years play he's as good as gone next year.

I agree about Butler. I really hope we are able to extend Hightower, Butler, and Collins. Keeping this young defense together is the key to another Super Bowl before Brady retires. I'd be ok with Jones leaving after next year if the pats are able to extend the other 3. Going to be an exciting offseason with so many players already under contract and plenty of cap space. Only 3 weeks until free agency starts!

I'd cut Cannon in a heart beat over having to pay him that. He's definitely not worth it. They can roll with Waddle and draft an OT/OG. The depth would be fine.

What good is a swing Tackle who cant play? Cannon struggles on the left side and on the right side.

If the new OL coach is fine with Waddle, then Cannon will indeed be cut.

On the other hand, Scar may want to wait until camp to make the decisions with regard to the OT position.

I don't know. Branch for $2.4m seems like a pretty decent deal. Unless Pats have ambitions to re-sign Hicks and bring someone like Nick Fairley.

If Hicks is going to get 3 million a season them cutting Branch makes sense. Imo Belichick pays a great deal of attention to unit cost and IIRC DL is the most expensive unit on the team. I have no problem with that as they are worth it and have 3 first rounders on that unit but they will likely try to offset Hicks in some way if they do re-sign him, and Branch is the most likely cut.

The timing feel right for sure. The next play can be your last in this league, and particularly considering where he was, you have to think Butler would jump at the chance to lock in millions.

Who doesn't struggle against the likes of Von Miller? In case you missed it, Vollmer was as much a turnstile against Miller as Cannon was.

Cannon's decline seems to coincide with DeGugliermo's hiring. With Scar back, Cannon should be serviceable again..

He wings and misses? I heard that when he was a little kid, he picked up a wiffle ball and bat, threw the ball up in the air, swung, and missed... He did this again... and again... He then got excited and said to himself "WHAT A PITCHER!!!"

Isn't Cannon a Scarnecchia guy? Cannon's struggles began when Goog came in and he had an ankle injury too right? With Scar back and with his ankle properly healed I think Cannon's career could turn around fairly quickly.

With that being said, $3.6 million cap saving is nice. I wouldn't care too much if Cannon was cut. We will see what happens I guess.
