Tom has passed Gomer for the record, which, while not heralded like the total TD tally, is actually a more impressive record when you think about it. You tell me: if you were evaluating a quarterback for your team, would you prefer to to know how many total TDs they threw last year, or how many more TDs than INTs?

TD:INT differential

The Greatest of All-Time
Regular Season (427-149), +278
Playoffs (53-26), +27
Total (480-175), +305

The Disgruntled Backup for the Denver Broncos

Regular Season (539-251), +288
Playoffs (38-24), +14
Total (577-275), +302

I don't think anyone else is even close to either one of these two.

I wonder whether the ratio or differential would actually be more useful. I'm never a fan of career accumulation stats, and the differential would fall under that.

All of them have some drawbacks. We know the flaws of cumulative stats, and efficiency stats fail because there is some importance to longevity. Combining efficiency and longevity is what the differential formula attempts to do, although it is certainly not the QBR-esque Holy Grail we all seek. It is not the end all stat, but in my opinion, it is more indicative of success than simply counting TDs.

I had a thread you may like, a few weeks ago, which was similar to this but more focused on efficiency. In an "average" season, which I put at something like 600 pass attempts, Manning throws like 2 more TDs and 100 more yards but at the cost of four more interceptions. Or, would you want Brady to start game 17 of the season to throw for 100 yards, 2 TDs, and 4 INTs, so he would "equal" Manning's big stats? I think I made an unassailable case that Brady's stats trump the Stat King and it can be proven on paper as well as to the eye. The TDs and yards were negligible to success while the INTs demonstrate a strong correlation to win %.

Seeing those numbers is a vivid reminder of the difference between the two QBs in the playoffs. Drew Brees is another QB who has a much better TD/INT differential in the playoffs.

Tommy LomBrady needs one more season with 35 TD passes to break another tie with P6. Both QBs have done it 4 times.

As good as TB's numbers are, they're even more incredible when you consider that he's played far more games outside and in cold climates than either P6 or DB have.

.........................................Brady............................Manning
reg season TD:int ratio 2.87:1 ............................. 2.15:1
playoffs ..........................2.04:1 ............................. 1.58:1
overall ............................2.74:1 .............................. 2.09:1
Even more impressive for Brady

Good numbers. Curious - who is the all time TD/int ratio leader among players with at least 100 starts? Brady's up there but may not be #1

If you assume Manning has thrown his last TD. Brady would need 112 TDs to tie the all time record. 4 more seasons of 30+ TDs would do it. Not unthinkable giving the level of Play TB plays at.

Brady will soon have the most total wins as well. (Playoff + regular season)

Bret Favre - 199 wins - .618 win pct
Peyton Man- 197 wins - .682 win pct
Tom Brady - 193 wins - .772 win pct

Aaron Rodgers - 4.05
Russell Wilson - 3.06 (only 70 starts) (thanks for the correction @Wheelman )
Tom Brady - 2.87
Steve Young - 2.17
Peyton Manning - 2.15

I was a little surprised that Manning has fewer playoff INTs than Brady. Then I checked the total games and Brady's played in 5 more postseason games (so far) which explains it.

Differential is better for career stats because ratios could be skewed by some 4-5 year player with 30 TDs and 5 INTs.

I don't have this stat but I would love to see Rushing TDs by their teams to go with those passing TDs. Me thinks the Patriots will have far more rushing TDs than the Colts/Broncos.

You should ask yourself why you need to dig up stats to "prove" that Manning's numbers are somehow flawed. Why can't you just accept that Manning is an all-time great QB and be done with it?

And guess what? The reason why Manning has a lot of goalline TD passes isn't because there's some conspiracy to pad his TD numbers, it's because he's an awesome fecking QB and the coaches trust him to get it done down there over a half-ass RB.

Just looked at 2011-2015 total passing/rushing TD's. Ranked by percentage of rushing TD's.
(Does not include Defensive/ST TD's.)

Not implying Manning's numbers are flawed or that he isn't a great QB. Just analyzing how teams score TD's and attempting to put a perspective on a QB's total TD's etc...... Just playing with numbers.
