Nick from Annapolis, MD: It seems to me the Jaguars have an abundance of good receivers, but no one that’s great. Is this a good assessment?
Vic: The Jaguars’ greatest concern, in my opinion, is that they don’t have a number one receiver. By that I mean they don’t have a guy who has performed to the level you expect from a number one receiver. I’m not talking about 40 times and the potential to become a number one receiver. I’m talking about performance. For the Jaguars to fix their pass-offense, one of their receivers has to step into the “number one” category. Don’t tell me about Tom Brady and his receivers last year. He’s Tom Brady. In my opinion, the Jaguars’ quest to become a championship contender rests with the emergence of a number one receiver.
Jeff from Jacksonville: Following up on the Carucci article on the Jags, he says the team had a late-season collapse when injuries began to mount. We lost Jones before the season and Hayward, Peterson and Leftwich before the halfway point. Wouldn't it be more accurate to say Garrard suffered a late-season collapse? Why does he seem to get a free pass? This is what the non-Jaguars NFL fan sees written and thinks it’s the truth about this team, which isn't the case.
Vic: David Garrard had a meltdown in Tennessee and that began a three-game skid that kept the Jaguars out of the playoffs, but Garrard shouldn’t get the blame for the losses to New England and Kansas City. He had a 113.5 passer rating against the Patriots, which is the game that truly ruined the Jaguars’ playoff hopes. The play of the defense in the last two games of the season was very disappointing, not to mention special teams, which allowed a punt to be blocked and recovered in the end zone for a touchdown. When I think back on those last three games, I see Laurence Maroney running 27 yards for a touchdown with the game and the season on the line. That was the killer. Garrard wasn’t the only guy who collapsed.
