Game Thoughts: Pats grounded Air Bowles in their first match up edition

The Giants in the 90s had some great LBs too, but I'll take Collins and Hightower in today's NFL over and duo in history.

I'm not completely convinced I take them over Luke Kuechly and Thomas Davis. I do, just, but I wouldn't strongly disagree with someone who put the Carolina pair at no1. But, Hightower and Collins are excellent. Their one weakness is in coverage, that's why I can't agree with you that they're the best ever v

It was also nice to have a Pats game not called by Cris "the Predator" Collinsworth of Phil Simms. I forgot what it was like to hear a game called by announcers that don't hate our team.
Didn't really feel any hate, just a couple of little things.

But, I was thinking...maybe Chris Ivory had a live feed from the crew and couldn't run properly because he got a stiffie from those boys man-crushing on him all game.

- James White looked like a competent backup for Lewis, which is huge given the injury rate of receiving RBs.

- LaFell's drops were brutal, but the good news is he was coming open where Brady wanted him. I feel pretty confident that he'll remember to pack his hands next week.

- Am I right that the Patriots came out clean on injuries today? On the Jets side, Mangold, Pryor and Richardson is a tough group to go down. If Pryor is out for any length of time, safety becomes the glaring weak spot on the NYJ defense.

White still needs to break tackles though. Still goes down at first contact too much. He's a decent backup but I think he's upgradeable. Cough - DJ Foster - cough.

Certainly best ever in Pats history at the very least.
I'd lamented Bruschi & Vrabes getting old and felt that those were the good old LB days but these 2 are better. So if they're better than the 2003/4 LB corps, how much worse is this DL? I feel its gonna be better. Law & Harrison made those years' teams elite. Excellence at DL, LB and DB. No weaknesses.

Heard leading up to the game Marshall has had 100 yards and 1 TD in every game, he was simply a non factor in this game outside of 1 or 2 catches and Ryan played a part of that. If that was Browner today those people still killing Ryan would be singing Browner's praises but because it is Ryan it is different.

Justice was served with him dropping that TD with the clear as day OPI to get open.

Marshall was hearing steps because Ryan was pushing him hard all day, despite the size disadvantage. It has a lingering effect.

If only half those drops didnt happened Brady would have been about 75% today.

I think there were 12 total drops. He would've been over 80%. As collinsworth said 30 minutes ago, "Brady can play 10 more years".

It takes two seasons apparently. Amendola is finally getting into people's good graces.

Being injury free helps. The fact that Amendola's groin isn't shot shows. He's able to create separation in tight areas with burst and quickness.

Mentioned this elsewhere, but are you aware Lafell's had a whopping total of three practices this season?

Best line of the night from Bedard on Jets DL vs. our OL: "The Rolls Royce line vs. Bill's used cars lot."

I remember the '85 Bears having some pretty good linebackers. And Better than Navarro Bowman and Patrick Willis were pretty darn good.
too early to say whether they are better than Bowman and Willis, but THAT is an excellent comparison. At one point Bowman and Willis were the epitome of LB excellence. I'd be very happy to think that over the next few years Collins and Hightower give us the same kind of quality play that the Niners got from Willis and Bavarro at their prime.

I have no idea what's the jets plan was for those last two drives. Why wasn't Bowles having Fitzpatrick throw it deep?

That's the pairing that I had in mind as a comparison, and it shows you how quickly it can all end. With better luck, those two would still be the best LB pairing out there. It's not worth comparing to LBs of sa different era, as the job description has changed in many ways.

Why wasn't Bowles having Fitzpatrick throw it deep?

Likely the Pats employed a three (or even four) deep safety look, meaning all he'd be throwing would be jump balls which have an extremely low success rate. The last play before the formation penalty, the Pats rushed two guys. That's 9 in coverage.

They likely would have if they'd been able to spike the ball.

Disagree about revis. Still think he's the best corner in the league. I think we need another corner with size that can play man coverage

I don't think he's necessarily the best CB in the league, but he's certainly up there.

I'm not sure where all the "he's obviously lost a step or two" talk is coming from, since Welker would do the same to him 3-4-5 years ago when he was virtually unstoppable. Revis has always struggled a bit with the quicker timing routes, particularly when they are short crossing patterns. The Pats did a nice job of stacking and bunching at times to help free their man up, as usual. Didn't we see Sherman have some issues at times in the SB? Those guys are made to take away the physical threats, and they do a fine job of it the majority of the time.

It's okay to admit that the Jets may get 2-3 solid and productive years from Revis before moving on. Really it is. He's expensive, but they have no franchise QB, RB, or WR, so they're going to spend it somewhere.

That is true. I am just saying that no flag was thrown, so that would have been a TD. Look I like Ryan, and he definitely played better than Butler, but I just go by the fact that I don't always feel great with him back there. He is a solid #2 or #3 corner, but I don't have high expectations when he faces a player of Marshall's caliber.

They doubled Marshall all day, which was confirmed by Marshall, Eric Decker, and Tom Curran.

We once saw Sterling Moore "hold" Larry Fitzgerald to 1 catch with safety help acting as double coverage, if that tells you anything about Logan Ryan's play yesterday. Let's keep it in perspective.

This is nothing new when facing these clear cut WR1s. They let Butler match up one on one with Decker, which was a mixed bag at best. To take it one step further, I agree with you about Marshall dropping the easy TD pass. We can try and trick ourselves by trying to feel better that a flag could've/should've been called, but it wasn't, so I'm not taking that aspect into account. One can argue that on a lot of plays. It's just cherry picking stats and situations.

Logan Ryan is a mediocre CB, and should be a slot guy or CB3. Unfortunately, both he and Butler are playing one depth chart higher than they should be, although we've gone to the SB with worse. Hopefully, they both continue to improve, as Belichick defenses often do. Ryan may have played well for the standards we've set for him, but it's still probably nothing more than a CB3. We lost the Packers game because they continuously picked on him vs GB's WR3.
