The clock operator keeps the clock running after a touchback and no one directly involved notices. The officials don't see it. The Steelers and Chargers coaches and players don't notice. The staff in NY who are available for replays and challenges don't notice. Also, while they aren't playing, officiating or managing the game, the TV announcers miss it, also.

Last week, the officials miss a player batting a ball out of the endzone on MNF.

Yet we're supposed to believe that Walt Anderson accurately measured 48 footballs and is sure about those reading based solely on his memory. We're also supposed to accept that the halftime measurements were completely accurate, as well. Somehow, in their case against the Patriots, it's accepted as fact that the NFL got everything right, while operating on the fly in an activity they were undertaking for the first time in league history.

It's called the temporal east-west effect. Football teams traversing multiple time zones create minor time-shift anomalies. This is a natural phenomenon, it's nobody's fault.

That was my first thought too. Tomlin would've lost his mind, followed closely by the rest of the country.

The funny thing is, out of everyone who should have noticed, it's most inexcusable that Tomlin didn't. With 3 minutes left to drive the length of the field, how did nobody on the Steelers notice that 18 seconds had just disappeared?

Yeah, I don't really see how the "it didn't affect the outcome of the game" argument (I realize this is coming from PFT, not the NFL) somehow negates this issue. Put an extra 10-15 seconds on the clock for the last couple of plays and it changes how both teams approach it. Maybe the outcome is the same, but that's not excuse for missing an obvious error.

same reason he called a time out with 1:40 to go in the first half with the ball at the 40, giving SD a shot at a FG...he's unaware of basic clock management
