Jonas Gray Released [9/14 Update - This Time By Dolphins]

Looked better than Blount in the pre season.

But it's clear BB likes Blunt.

I think that Gray was a talented player, but it could be as simple as: at BB's age (63), with his 6 rings, having gone through Deflategate all year, he has decided that from now on he wants to coach players that are actually, you know, fun to coach. Smart, professional, non-knucklehead players. Who on the Patriots has been a knucklehead other than Gray and Blount? :

Alan Branch. Larger cap number than Gray at a position of greater depth than Gray's. Plus Gray passed HIS conditioning test upon arrival - - Fat Al didn't.

I think they need a third and short guy who can create yards on his own. That guy is not on the roster and I would not be surprised to see another RB come in. Then again, BB is always full of surprises.

Maybe, I still believe he can contribute more than Dola for this season, but it won't come right away. I love the things Amendola has done I just wish he'd be consistent.

FANTASTIC games here and there, some of the biggest key plays in all of the post season, whether it's TDs or crucial super-clutch 3rd down conversions, yet, he's been invisible in the PS and has played late into many games with the roster crowded with young pass catchers who won't even make the team.
I'm going to disagree slightly on this one. Whether or not Dobson makes the team has little to nothing to do with Amendola. Amendola was not great for much of his time in NE sans the last quarter and postseason of 2014. He was arguably GREAT down the stretch. Plays like that are what he showed prior to arriving that had a great portion of us excited about the signing (while still acknowledging his injury history). Durability will remain a concern for the rest of his career, but I think what we saw from him late can, and likely will, carry over. All accounts in TC are that he has looked incredible and is fully healthy.

I agree that he has been invisible in the preseason, but tell me who on the "first unit" has not looked bad to terrible. Even the QB has not looked like himself. But that's vastly due to the injuries. We have yet to see the true iteration of this year's offense. C'mon. You can't take one individual part of a whole that is not functioning near it's optimum capacity and say, "Look, he's been awful. Let's look at other options." It's just not fair . . . not any more fair than the people piling onto Blount right now. I'm not saying that I know whether or not these guys will perform when it matters, so much as I'm saying we don't know what we have at this point with some of these guys and it's unfair to base everything on what little we've seen in a preseason where none of our big names shined bright and one of them played 0 snaps.

So either BB thinks he can do better or he feels he doesn't need one. I sense a loss of faith.... Of course, it could be wrong.

Jeff Howe ?@jeffphowe 1m1 minute ago

As of 5 minutes ago, Jonas Gray is still a Patriot. Not so sure he lasts the hour, though.

I think this means that Cadet sticks now. I wonder if these type of backs are better for running behind our offensive line or if it means that we are going to be throwing the ball more often. In this division, kind of makes sense not to line up a big back and try and ram it down their throat. They are not the Colts. lol
The kinds of backs we have are the types that thrive in a zone-blocking scheme, which is more and more what Josh is using.

Dikembe, I'm here if you need to talk...
I was going to see if we could rotate watch to make sure Dikembe doesn't do something self-destructive.

Probably shouldn't have leaked they were going to cut him if they were going to trade him. 7th at best.

I love this move.

Dion Lewis, who went to Pitt, drafted by Philly, of course, on track to get his first NFL start against the Steelers.

Love it. No need for a JAG RB who doesn't play ST and can't break a tackle.

Good point, I completely forgot about Branch. He was definitely a knucklehead with another team (as was Blount). I didn't think that Branch had been a problem with the Patriots, but I guess one could make a strong argument that failing the conditioning test for a professional athlete might be a knucklehead red flag. Didn't Blount flunk it once also?

So: with Gray gone, we have two knuckleheads left, Blount and Branch, surrounded by a team of smart, professional football players. Let's see how the season goes, I still think both of them should rent instead of buy.

To whom are you referring? Surely it can't be Gray, who breaks plenty of tackles.

When?

vs. Indianapolis doesn't count in this discussion. Everyone breaks tackles against them.

Just another one who forgot the Chicago and Miami games.

The "fans" who only remember the Indy game and forget the other 3 games where he was given more than 3 or 4 carries are like those screaming that "Brady destroyed his cellphone". Paying attention is too hard.......

BB never gave him much of a chance. I sure hope Rex or Philbin don't.

Looks like Bolden did well enough that he will be the 2nd power back and probably starter week 1. Looks like Lewis or Cadet or maybe both get a roster spot. Still releasing Gray is a bit of a shocker. Blount is recovering from an injury and the season hasn't even started yet. I like Bolden but there is a reason he was a special teams player and not a lead back.

Oh. I do. That will be entertaining.

I am assuming this is all about his attitude, both last year for being late, then whining and moaning about it in media, and generally having a sense of entitlement after that one game against the colts.

BB clearly feels this is one moron whose ego he doesn't want to deal with.

And.......... I hate this move.

I guess he didn't live up to the behavioral standards of Blount.
