I think it's clear that the Patriots, for better or worse, have judged that they were not going to extend themselves far for this crop of free agents. Over the past week we've seen names floated around that the Patriots were potentially interested in only to see them sign elsewhere for relatively middling deals. Personally I don't understand it but then again what would I know? Yes I understand players are cut in late Spring and into training camp, and those can indeed provide good value and depth. But with the cap space we currently have, and the additional space we are surely going to acquire once Mayo and Solder have their deals restructured, late released free agents will hardly account for much of that. The draft will not take up much cap space either, especially with our end of the round picks.

So, that all being said there are two lingering issues with the current team.
1. They need to improve the team in certain positions (particularly in the secondary and the defensive line)
2. They need to spend some money

In my view the only option available is to pursue trades for players from other teams. Which players I don't know. But as a Pats fan openly concerned with the way the off season has gone so far I am hoping to see some salvation through this avenue. So, any thoughts on this line of thinking? What players that might be on the market? Am I being crazy?

I think you have to wait until the beginning of the season for the yearly fleecing of Tampa Bay!
