Will McCourty be a Patriot in 2015?

That's OK. The second 'c' is capitalized, but at least now I feel comfortable voting.

I really do think he will be back. The only way we won't keep him is if we have to spend too much on Revis.

I voted no. I have a feeling the Colts, Jets, or Giants will pay him 8+. We already know New England didn't want him for one year at 9. I'm not an expert on the current market conditions for a FS of his caliber, but its gotta be close to the tag number they weren't comfortable with.

I mean, after ALL the crap that POS team and their literal cokehead owner put the team and its fans through in the leadup to the Super Bowl you are going to consider going there? They were literally claiming that every single one of the team's, and in turn Devin's, accomplishments were worthless and tainted. They slandered him and threw his team mates through the mud. Seriously, sign with the Jets, the Titans, the Jags I don't care. But not the Colts. Do you have any self respect Devin?

Ryan and Harmon on the roster, one will probably take over at free safety. Bb can draft a developmental guy to also play st.

Bb must get revis signed. It is job number one.

Your take is a fans point of view. From his point of view, he has a short window to capitalize on a very rare set of talents. From age 35 on he will rely on this money he's making off this contract.

I don't think Belichick told us anything except the team didn't have the cap room to ever consider tagging McCourty.

The franchise tag isn't used very often. Other than kickers, it was only used on four players Monday. At high price positions, it doesn't make any sense to use it on anyone but a... ahem.... FRANCHISE player. You don't see many safeties getting the franchise tag, just like you don't see many safeties getting drafted in the first round.

People are reading way too much into an obvious decision not to franchise tag a safety.

I think it would be difficult to argue against your thoughts here, but one other thing to consider is that this particular year may make things more difficult than some other examples. For instance, I wonder if things would have been any different last year when they had much more money and less key free agents to re-sign?

It may have no bearing whatsoever, but it's something that I have pondered. In a year like this, there are just too many key parts to try and retain, that's it's fairly understandable to see some of them walk. McCourty may just be one of those guys. That said, I'm sure they could've structured a year one cap hit for about 50-60 percent of that 9.6m dollar franchise tag on a long term deal, had they really wanted to. It's probably more likely that they just didn't see his value quite as high as someone else will next Tuesday.

Eh...maybe/maybe not.

The Pats certainly haven't been afraid to use the tag lately in an effort to attempt to work out a longer term deal or have bigger plans in place, particularly at key positions that cost a lot of money.

As you say, it's possible that just wasn't an option this particular year due to cap circumstances. It's certainly possible that they don't view safety as important, and/or that they especially don't see it as important when they (hopefully) have Revis at CB.

unless the pats cut or rework Revis contract they are not re-signing or signing anyone. but even what that said I think the pats have made there offer and I think its in the 6 or 7 million range and he signs with a new team in the first few days of free agency

He isnt a RB he can capitalize for 8 + years. he is 27 now. Charles Tillman is 35, Troy Polamalu 34 ...
I dont know him obviously but if we offer him 7.5m and colts 9m its not that big difference. Why? Boston is bigger than Indianapolis. Probably he will get more sponsors in NE than in Indiana. He will be winning that means money.

They don't have the cap space to franchise him w/o affecting their ability to sign Revis. Theoretically, they could have franchised DMC, then done a deal with Revis, and then gone back and done a long-term deal with DMC, but I think DMC's move would have been to sign the tag immediately, which would have given him a lot of leverage in his contract talks with the Patriots. They remember what Welker did to them in 2012. I think the bottom line is that they don't consider him to be a franchise-type player. I suspect some team with a lot of cap space will make him a $9-$10M AAV offer. If that's the case, he should break off a piece of that contract and send it to Revis.
