By what standard are the Patriots the youngest team to ever win the Super Bowl?

Easy, you have to weight the numbers.

A guy who plays in the SB is listed as 37 if he's one day before his 38th birthday, or 364 days before it. So Brady born August 3rd is actually 37.59 years old. Another guy listed at 37 might be 37.99 years old. Now I calculated that for all 53 players of all SB winning teams.

Next I weighted it. Take Jones, he played 34 minutes, while Gostkowski played 4. So Jones age is 34/60 of the age of the team, and Gostkowski is 4/60. Then I did that for all players of all SB teams.

Once all that was done I got 25.2 exactly.

And if you believe I did that I have a bridge for sale.

What they actually did was go to profootballreference- clicked on roster and read the number. For the Patriots 25.2.

http://www.pro-football-reference.com/teams/nwe/2014_roster.htm

It includes everyone who was on the team at anytime so around 75 guys. It's not necessarily the worst way, a guy that played 15 games but not the last wouldn't be in the SB but is arguably part of the winning team by getting them there. The numbers line up for what was reported as Seattles age last year as well (25.0). As for the 26.6 number. I don't know, but these reporters aren't exactly blowing me away with research so I'm sure they didn't calculate it. You can bet it's on another website somewhere whether right wrong, or a different methodology.

The SB winning Seahawks of 2013 had a slightly lower average age at 25.0, so the Patriots are the 2nd youngest team ever to win the big game.

This is according to the Globe: http://www.bostonglobe.com/sports/2...more-titles/P2Eaa8WClUdQmkmjCzrjXJ/story.html

And also the Herald: http://www.bostonherald.com/sports/...atriots/2015/02/the_super_bowl_xlix_checklist

However, it seems as though ESPN states that they are actually the youngest team to win it, so who knows what system is correct? Either way, things are looking good for the future of the team in my opinion.

I think what he's getting at though is the numbers don't add up. We know people have reported them, but are they correct. The numbers don't mean much if they're wrong. It looks like they just read them off profootballreference.com

There's different ways to do it, but arguably, the way they were calculated at profootballreference isn't a very good way. If you just used the 53 man rosters you would get different numbers and the Patriots may not be the second youngest, or maybe they become the youngest. I don't know.

Good detective work in the original article...

No, I understand the debate over "how" these numbers were arranged. I'm just pointing out the inconsistency in general, where both the Herald + the Globe state that they weren't even the youngest team to begin with.

Since ESPN was the major outlet who reported the Pats as being the youngest team, one would assume that they used whatever method they used in the previous year for comparison's sake. However, as Miguel points out, you just can't trust them--or most media outlets anymore.

There were 107 players that were once on the Patriots 90 roster or on the practice squad. Their average age is 25.2. While Pro Football Reference says that the average age is 25.2 they show on
http://www.pro-football-reference.com/teams/nwe/2014.htm 69 players. Their average age is 25.88.

Arguing over the age of the Super Bowl champion Patriots...

The 69 players listed on the ProFootballReference include Cam Henderson, Antonio Johnson, Rufus Johnson and Dion Lewis. None of whom were on the 53-man roster at any time in the roster.

Do you know why they are listed? Is there something they all have in common?

Henderson was briefly on the Patriots practice squad in December. The other three were signed to 2015 futures contracts during playoffs so it makes no sense to include them on a 2014 roster listing

I meant could the measure they are using to call the Patriots the youngest all players who were on the 53 at any time, and/or active in a game.
I saw how PFR is doing it, but didnt see anyone using the measure I mentioned. Just wondering if maybe that was what was used rather than PFR numbers.

That would be the Super Bowl roster plus 6 players who were placed on IR during the season (Mayo, Dennard, Dobson, Ridley, Easley and Buchanan) and other players who had brief stays on the 53 man roster (Maneri, Skinner, Thompkins, Don Jones, Casey Walker, Chris Barker, Ja'Gared Davis. The average age as of 12/31/2014 of those 66 players is 26.14.

Ok, doesn't sound like thats how they did it then, unless the same method on the 13 Seahawks comes out higher than 26.14 which I assume it does not.
Perhaps the claim is just wrong.
