He is going to be a steal. I dont give a shat about the fact he made a mistake and beat the **** out of a fellow player in that brawl. He appologized for his actions, and admitted made a immature mistake. Same thing 90 percent of young men do at some point in there youth. He owns a handgun just like a ton of other people in this country. That is legal in the United States. Take a ride down south, everyone has guns. Girls, guys, young, old, you name it. The Miami dade police found NO crimes against Meriweather when they declared that gun situation self defense. It is perfectly legal to protect yourself with a registered handgun if the situation calls for it. Some poeple need to take up the right to bear arms with the us goverment. Not Meriweather owning a perfectly legal handgun. The whole pac man , henrey situation has everyone blowing things out of proportion. The fight was not even that big of a deal. Some want the kid banned from the nfl for making a mistake in a giant brawl where emotions, and "following the leader" got the best of him.

Kids going to be a great player. I hope we draft him : )

I really like Merriweather, if they could get him and either Beason whom I prefer or Harris our D will be great...

I'm willing to bet that 90% of men have not stomped on the head on an athletic opponent on the field at some point in their youth. What are the stakes?

Your 'everybody does it' defense raises more questions than answers.

I want tough-minded players who when presented with challenges can think for themselves based upon what they've been taught.

We'll see if the Pats braintrust has an opportunity to say whether they want to trust him.

I am offended by the 90% statment.I have known a tonne of people growing up and alot more as i am 30 and never met anyone stomping on another players head before.Me and my friends played alot of sports and have alot of broken bones but never stomped on thehead of any guy.

PFW's Nolan Nawrocki said it best below and captures my exact thoughts on Meriweather.

Draft Q&A

PFW's Nolan Nawrocki answers readers' questions about this year's draft

Hi guys,
Great draft coverage. One simple question — will the new player conduct policy really have any effect on this year's draft? It is very apparent your mock draft with Brandon Meriweather going No. 17 in the first round pays no attention to the projected rule violators. The guys making those decisions in less than a week are playing with real money. Lots of it.I'm not criticizing you guys. Just asking.
—Thanks, J. Wood

J.,
It’s not inconceivable that Meriweather slips out of the first round because teams have a difficult time pulling the trigger on a player who openly fired shots at an assailant in college and who stomped on a player during a melee against Florida International. I will say this — there are teams with a serious need for a safety who are scared to take him in the top 20. That said, he grades out as a top 20 talent as a football player. He has good football intelligence, he will hit, he has good cover ability and could move into the slot in nickel situations. He has a lot of value, and I think a confident decision-maker, such as Bill Belichick or Andy Reid, with a veteran football team to keep him in line, will roll the dice late in the back end of the first round, especially given that many teams do not think the concerns are as serious about his character as they are for others. He did, after all, fire in defense, and does not have any documented history with drugs. He takes the game seriously and studies it. He's a football junkie. His personal character may not be great, but his football character is, and many teams are more concerned with football character than personal character or citizenship, as teams have called it.

He's a football junkie. His personal character may not be great, but his football character is...

What a great distinction. This now goes into my ever-evolving equation of player value. "Personal Character" is a measure of risk, while "Football Character" is a predictor of success: film rat, the game is important to him, plays to the whistle, always in the weight room, etc. Both matter, but they factor in differently.

He made a mistake. He apologized for it. 90 percent of young men are not put in the situation of a bench clearing brawl, in which the entire team is fighting. It is not out of the ordinary for a young guy to make a really stupid mistake. The kid apologized and admitted what he did was wrong. He did not pull a Pac man and point out he was not convicted of a crime. He admitted what he did was very stupid and he learned from it. Instead of passing off the blame, he said he made a huge mistake, and apologized sincerely like a man. Everyone wants to act all high and mighty about it. The fact is the kid did something really stupid when he got caught up in huge fight. Not that big of a deal.

Yes - chances are he will impregnate a lot of young women - I'd be willing to bet you're right

Chances are you would critasize Meriweather when he has done nothing like that, but have no problems when Brady actually knocks chicks up.

well it took awhile for Meriweather to get respect but after a long time of me and another member saying how good he was and no character issues..people have decided to hop on the bandwagon! Mission ACCOMPLISHED

Why would a college kid own a gun? Unless he knew that the type of life style he lives, or types of people he hangs with makes him feel that he may need it one day. Self defense or not, that shows me that he is making wrong decisions and traveling down the wrong road. I say no thanks to him.

If you are offended by that statement you are overly sensitive. The 90 percent comment was directed at young men making mistakes and fighting. Which is accurate. I don't know a single guy who has not at one point or another made a big mistake or had a fight. 90 percent of athletes are not subjected to two entire teams brawling. The kid mad a huge mistake and he took full responsibility. He did not duck the blame. He is sorry, and you can tell. What more would you like? Life time banishment from the NFL. If that is the case a few pats players might be subject to the same thing from past mistakes.

Are you saying I am riding a bandwagon? Could be that I liked the player and don't really pay attention to any of your posts. Or it could be another person in this world is a fan of Meriweather!!!!?? You know since we don't really check out what "remix" thinks before we make a post about a player we like.

There have been lots of people on both sides on Meriweather; personally, I'm firmly on the fence. The unusual thing about you, Remix, is that you've also been out front dismissing character concerns about Eric Wright and (on the main board) Michael Vick. Do you think personal character issues are overblown in general?

um..when i said bandwagon i didnt mean it in a negative way..i meant it more as a "Meriweather fan club" but i was also saying that myself and another poster had to go against all the Negative People while we supported Meriweather and now it seems the whole board likes him and im just happy for that

In the south it is common place for people of all ages to own guns. In college I lived next to a girl from Texas. She owned a small hand gun. She was 19 years old. She had several rifles at home. We always teased her about it. She would always act bewildered that we thought owning a gun was "weird". All her friends owned guns, as well as her parents. This girl was young, attractive and smart. That is why we thought it was odd she owned a hand gun in case she had to protect herself. It was on the order of her father she kept it. I went to to NEU.

The gun culture is not as prevalent up here as in the south. So lemme get this straight, if you own a gun legally, and are forced to protect yourself with it, you are making the wrong decisions in life? Could it be that he was in the wrong place at the wrong time? Could it be he had to defend his life? Meriweathers father is a cop. Meriweather wants to become a cop (if he did not play football) it is easy to see why he would have a registered handgun. Not like it matters the Constitution of this country makes it clear you have a right to bear arms.

What would you say if Maroney was out in Boston, and a criminal tried to shoot him? What would you say if Maroney protected himself with his registered hand gun? Would you call for him to be cut? I think you would commend his heroic efforts and understand he was defending himself. A lot of athletes own guns. You just don't hear about it.

Got it. Sorry for the misunderstanding. I apologize for some of the things I wrote.

Im not dismissing Wright actually. I like him as a player. The thing about Vick and Wright is..neither of them have been in jail for what they did or gotten in big enough trouble. The case about Wright raping a woman and the XTC pills (which might not have been his) never got anywhere..he did get kicked out of USC but that was a few years ago and nothing really came of it..if it did he would be in jail. With Vick..theres some peopel jumping on his back because hes Michael Vick. 1) No evidence of marijuana || 2) His propery..he doesnt live there..trouble arises and people are calling for suspension..what for? No one said he was involved..

I defend innocent people. They might be questioned and brought in but unless they get convicted and its positive that they did cause trouble, then i dont have a problem really. Unless its repetitive and makes you wonder ..why are cops always around him

I sit down and wait to see what happens..and since nothing really happened with Wright, Meriweather or Vick yet..i cant hold a grudge. I dont defense Henry..i dont defend Pacman and i dont defend druggies.

imo..some people are quick to judge. They jump on Meriweather for owning a gun..well cut Samuel and Gaffney..shoot i bet Brady owns a gun too
