Broncos to release Al Wilson

Al Wilson (Post file / Hyoung Chang)Al Wilson's Broncos career is over. The Broncos will release the former defensive captain today, according to a source close to the situation.

A news conference is scheduled at 2 p.m. to discuss Wilson's future at the Denver office of Wilson's agent, Peter Schaffer.

There is a strong chance Wilson, 29, may not play in 2007 and that he could decide to end his career.

The five-time Pro Bowl selection suffered a neck injury Dec. 3 against Seattle. He was taken off the field on a stretcher and spent a short time at a local hospital before being released. Wilson then came back to finish the season.

However, on March 23, he failed a physical with the New York Giants, who nixed a proposed trade from Denver. Wilson subsequently saw a specialist in Los Angeles who confirmed the injury.
Wilson was a first-round draft choice out of Tennessee in 1999. He quickly became a fierce vocal leader and a fan favorite. Wilson was voted a starter for the Pro Bowl this past season, but he didn't play because of he had postseason thumb surgery.

It has been news for a long time that the guy can't even pass a physical, so maybe we can cut this thread off quick, and keep it from becoming a "should we take a flyer on this guy" circus. He's DONE. If he weren't, Denver wouldn't release him.

Agreed... outstanding player. It helps us, but it's sad to see a competitor like Wilson have to go... I hope that he is ok.

I have no idea how Gene Upshaw sleeps at night. Any chance this guy gets released if he is healthy? Think about the amount of money that hurt baseball players get paid. I'm pretty sure that the Oriloes are still paying Albert Belle!!!!

I can only hope that this shows you the differnce between the Krafts and other owners, they paid Teddy, even when he had a non-football related injury, and carried Edwards for a few years when he was hurt.

I don't know what his injury is, I'm guessing nerve damage or a neck problem, but this guy was a helluva player, and to see him tossed aside like this is a sad statement about the NFL.

Yeah, poor guy only played in the NFL for eight years and only made millions and millions of dollars while playing. Do you guys want to start a fund for him? The fact of the matter is that there is no way the NFL could have the guaranteed contracts that other sports do just because of the violent nature of the game. I do agree with you in that if he is too badly injured to play again then the Broncos should show some class and help him out with rehab or a job if he wants one. That being said, of all the people to worry about in the world Al Wilson is pretty far down on my list and something like this is the least of my problems with Upshaw.

Anyway, it may be the case that he failed the Giants physical because they found something that would preclude them from taking on his big contract, its not necessarily a career ending injury like some are making it out to be. If it does turn out to be more of a concern than a major problem and Wilson is willing to play for less $$$ in exchange to have a great shot at winning a ring, then I would love to see him in a Pat's uniform. Of course if it does turn out that his neck injury is a real problem then I would rather he stays off the field than risks doing permanent damage, he's played for a while and made his money.

I have to say that I fully agree with this statement.

However, I watched the video of Al Wilson getting questioned by the media and it wasn't his answers or remarks that threw me a curveball. It was the way he moved his neck. I've had neck problems in the past and with even a strained neck, you can't move it around like that. I'd take a chance on him if he came down on his price.

His injury situation is very unfortunate. I never liked the guy, but that was only because he played for those damn Broncos. I respected his game though.
