Darrelle Revis has been wowed by Malcolm Butler's ability to pick up the pro game. Says "he's like a sponge." http://www.csnne.com/blog/patriots-talk/sponge-revis-wowed-butlers-aptitude…

He's a rook and he's taken his lumps," said Darrelle Revis. "But at the same time, the upside of how quickly he gathers information -- he's like a sponge. He gathers information so fast, his learning curve is very good in the way he absorbs information. You throw him out there, he knows what to do. He knows his assignments and he's been making plays for us. It's great. It's great to see a young guy coming in to step up right away and contribute for the defense."

I love me some Malcolm Butler.

I'm hoping Jay will look at him on the All-22. I want a more detailed breakdown of how he did, especially against Emmanuel Sanders. He looks like he has good ball location and skills, he's physical for his size, and he has an aggressive mentality. I like the kid, and love hearing this from Revis.

Eric Frenz from the Globe was down on him vs DEN but I thought he did fine. He kept pretty much everything in front of him and had a nice breakup...

DBs are almost impossible to get a handle on from the TV, but Butler was always around the ball. Even on the completions, he had a hand in there. He was toasted on the 4th down overthrow at the end of the game and Sanders bailed him out one other time by not coming back for the ball, but he looked nothing like a UDFA on every other throw in his direction.

Spot on post...Butler look good out there but he not a finished product would like to see how he looks a year from now. That said I think having Revis really helps a Top Flight CB that makes everybody around them better. My wish before all else is a Revis Extension.

Here s all I can say about Butler. He is clearly improving throughout the season and looks to be the fastest CB the Patriots have. I think he has more speed than Revis even. Looked like it with a few of his breaks on the ball and ability to recover.

Probably why he was out there on Sanders so much. I think he is a keeper. Which means if the Pats sign Revis which I hope they do. One of the Dennard/Ryan/Arrington are gone. I just don't see them keeping all 6 next year.

Reminds me of Randall Gay a little. Always seemed to be in position to make a tackle, break up a pass and hardly ever was burned.

Here's how good Butler is:

Dennard is a healthy scratch. Now, Butler does also play ST. But Dennard... he ain't hay.

Couple thoughts:

1. CB is one of the hardest positions for rookies to play well. Gilbert has been getting torched all year, Dennard barely plays for the Bengals, and Roby has been inconsistent at best. Butler's arguably been better than all of them in man coverage in limited time this year.

2. Butler had to have run his 40 time poorly or he just has great game speed. He plays like a 4.4 and ran a 4.6.

I always overrate our UDFAs (BJGE, Sterling, KT) because I love their stories. I really think that Butler has the highest ceiling out of all of them though. It says something winning a CB3/CB4 job with our CB group.

Probably Arrington, with that contract.

He's probably not worth $6.5M in new salary over 2015 and 2016 to the Patriots, but I have to wonder if he'd be worth something (e.g., a 5 or a 6) to a CB-needy team.

Patriots use 3 or more CBs all the time, 4-2-5 is basicly the base D - So haveing 3 extra CBs is to much? There was a reason BB when with 4 LBs.. But ppl keep liveing in the past where teams need 6-7-8 LBs and 3-4 CBs... anno 2014-15 6 Cbs aint much.

I honestly can't see Dennard being happy right now - unless he's got a shoulder issue he's cleaning up.

Wouldn't surprise me to see him Tommy Kelly'd, which would bum me out because he's a really good CB.

I suspect one of the reasons the Patriots kept so many defensive backs on the 53 and had such a lopsided roster composition was because they were high on Butler and did not think they could get him onto the PS without another team claiming him.

Bedard IIRC is the one who said the reason Dennard isn't playing isn't really health. it's becasue they are trying to transition him into a different role. Browner and Revis are the #1 and #2 on this team no question.
So Dennard would have to move more into the slot and he isn't as comfortable in that role yety. He even said a week or two ago that he's working on getting it down and it will come.

Like Bedard said..a WR on the outside really only has 2 ways to go. A WR in the slot can step back for screen..left right up ect. Dennard has to adjust to that and isn't there yet IMO

Good point. If Revis or Browner were out for a game, Dennard would start on the outside. That doesn't mean he is '3rd corner' for all roles.

Probably Arrington, with that contract.

Yea. Arrington is pricey but Ryan and Dennard are cheap.

According to Patscap in 2015, Arrington will have a cap figure of $4.6m and $4.9 remaining in guaranteed money (2015+2016). BB likes his versatility on STs so my assumption is that they'll try to rework the deal.

Browner is scheduled to make $4.7m next year. I gotta think that they'll want to rework that.

Clearly DMC and Revis are the priorities..

Dennard is very serviceable. But he has a hard time staying on the field and keeping his nose clean.
