Not sure why we need to bring back Ridley. I would pass on resigning him.
If you take out the og from Alabama and put in og cann of sc and i think you have a monster mock draft.

I think if you can bring in Ridley for one year and cheaply then you can play him in pre-season and give yourself some options. To be honest, I've been very impressed by how Ridley has learned not to fumble.

He's one of the greatest RBs under BB here in NE, fast workhorse creative monster that always picks up significant yardage, on a 1 year prove it deal I'd take him back, leader and significant player

Both Cann and Kouandjio are great OGs however I just prefer Kouandjio as a prospect, hope you like the mock though, means a ton

100% agreed, 1 year deal , no harm no foul

I can't really comment on most of your picks because I haven't watched them yet. I do have two observations. I like Calhoun as a prospect and am absolutely fine with that pick - I have already said that we need to take advantage of this strong EDGE class. I do think the Tyler Kroft pick becomes a little redundant in light of Tim Wright's progress. If we are going to go TE, a think an inline type to backup Gronk is the way to go.

It really looks like some good de's will drop into the 20's. Hope we don't sit back. Go after one like we did Chandler jones in 2012. Just don't think the OL after the first 3-4 are worth a first. And, the good ones will get snapped up and the cost too prohibitive to trade up for.

If we don't go for a bigger name back in the second, I'd like to get that little tank from Miss St. Josh Robinson. Might be a good compliment to Shane Vereen.

I was speculating how much it would cost to get G. McCoy. I see he signed with TB. What do you guys think of Jared Odrick? Won't be nearly as expensive as McCoy or a guy like Suh.

Have no problem with signing odrick. He is having a good season for Miami thus far and seems like a good fit for our defense.

Calhoun is an edge rusher....
And understandable, however Kroft can block when needed, he's no AH or Wright, more of a typical TE

Assuming bb trades both thirds for another second rounder, my ideal draft day 1 and 2 is Calhoun, McCarty, cann and depreist.

????

I don't understand this. You list 4 players, so not sure how trading 2 3rd would give us 4 picks on day 1 and 2. Also, if we get a 3rd round comp pick, it's not traceable.

Here's a tweak with some major "what if" assumptions:

- Devin McCourty and Darrelle Revis are extended
- Shane Vereen is extended, and Stevan Ridley is re-signed to a 1 year deal
- Alan Branch and Akeem Ayers both work out as solid rotational players, and are extended (BIG assumption, just for working purposes). Branch gives them a big inside/outside run stopper, and Ayers gives them a versatile LB/DE and sub rusher.
- Dan Connolly is re-signed. He's a useful 3-position utility man. Marcus Cannon may or may not be extended, depending on how he recovers this season, and how Jordan Devey develops.

*** Trade: Pats trade 1st and 4th round picks (from TB) to move up in the 1st round.

1. Shawn Oakman, DE, Baylor. 6'8" 285#. Worth trading up for. Oakman and Jones will be tremendous bookends, and allow the Pats to eventually use Rob Ninkovich in a rotational role at both DE and LB.

2. TJ Clemmings, OL, Pittsburgh. 6'6" 315#. Manx has sold me on Clemmings.

3. Cameron Erving, OL, Florida St. 6'5" 320#. Erving's stock has slipped, but I still like his upside. Like Clemmings, he is a converted DT with athleticism who could play inside or out.

3 (comp). Jaquiski Tartt, S, Stamford. 6'1" 218#. WalterFootball has Tartt going in the 2nd round in their most recent mock, FWIW. He's a thumper who can cover.

4. Karlos Williams, RB, Florida St. 6' 219#. Like Erving, Williams has gotten some criticism this season, but the talent is there. With Ridley back for at least 1 season, the Pats can give Williams time to develop.

5. Clive Walford, TE, Miami. 6'3" 263#.

6 (comp). Stephone Anthony, LB, Clemson. 6'2" 245#.

7 (from Tenn). Kasen Williams, WR, Washington. 6'2" 215#. Another guy with talent who has slipped due to consistency issues.

Notes:

1. Ayers and Branch contributing and being worth keeping would significantly affect the draft, and allow the Pats to focus on DE and OL.

2. Depending on how much they think he has left, the Pats could move on from Wilfork in 2015 and sign a FA DT. Suh and McCoy are out of reach, but Terrance Knighton would be a good run stuffer, and Jerod Odrick would be solid.

3. Danny Amendola could be cut, and a FA WR replacement signed. Jeremy Maclin would be a nice fit.

Rough Projected Roster (54 players for now):

QB(2): Brady, Garoppolo.
RB(4-5): Ridley, Vereen, White, Williams, Gaffney
FB/H-Back(1): Develin
WR(5-6): Edelman, LaFell, +1, Dobson, Tyms/Williams
TE(3): Gronkowski, Wright, Walford
OL(9): Solder, Vollmer, Stork, Fleming, Connolly, Clemings, Erving, Wendell, Devey/Cannon

DT(5-6): Wilfork, Easley, Branch, Siliga, Jones, [Walker] (Easley and Branch both play end at times)
DE(4-5): Jones, Ninkovich, Oakman, Moore, Buchanan; Walker and Buchanan can fight for the 10th DL spot
LB(5): Mayo, Hightower, Collins, Ayers, Anthony (Ninkovich also gets reps at LB)
S(4-5): McCourty, Tartt, Ebner; 1-2 of Chung/Wilson/Harmon
CB(5-6): Revis, Browner, Dennard, Ryan, Arrington; Butler vs. a 5th safety

ST(4): Gronkowski, Allen, LS, Slater

With the additions of Ayers, Casillas and Branch, a minor tweak:

*** Trade: Pats trade 1st and 4th round picks (from TB) to move up in the 1st round.

1. Shawn Oakman, DE, Baylor. 6'8" 285#. Or Shane Ray, or Dante Fowler. But I'll stick with Oakman for now.

2. TJ Clemmings, OL, Pittsburgh. 6'6" 315#. He's locked in here for a while.

3. Cameron Erving, OL, Florida St. 6'5" 320#.

3 (comp). Jaquiski Tartt, S, Stamford. 6'1" 218#. If Casillas and Chung are both re-signed the Pats could bypass a safety, but I like Tartt. He can both hit and cover.

4. Clive Walford, TE, Miami. 6'3" 263#.

6 (from Tenn). Josh Robinson, RB, Mississippi St. 5'9" 215#. "The Human Bowling Ball". Robinson, White, Gray and Gaffney would give the Pats 4 young backs. This depends to some extent on whether Ridley and Vereen are re-signed and how Gray develops.

6 (comp). Kasen Williams, WR, Washington. 6'2" 215#. Another guy with talent who has slipped due to consistency issues.

7 (from TB). Terry Williams, DT, East Carolina. Worth a flier.

Note: If the New England Patriots re-sign Devin McCourty and Patrick Chung, selecting a safety in the 2015 NFL Draft is a lost cause since the New England Patriots will have six safeties under contract for the 2015 NFL Season.

If a third round compensatory draft pick is awarded to the New England Patriots:

3rd Round Compensatory - Leon Orr, DT - Florida or Preston Smith, DE - Mississippi State

I like every player in your draft. I presume you don't think much of Ayers of Casillas, or of their prospects beyond this year, since you have bookend LBs in the 1st and 7th rounds.

Ayers and Casillas will be both unrestricted free agents next season.

Jonathan Casillas is not an inside linebacker and due to his size or lack thereof is not the classic "stack and shed linebacker". Personally, I view Jonathan Casillas as "loose change".

Fair enough. Personally, I'm not convinced that we need a classic "stack and shed linebacker", and while I like both McKinney (VERY much) and Anthony I prefer to hope that Ayers and Casillas will work out and remain, and focus on the DL instead.

One more tweak: with Shawn Oakman potentially out of trade up range, I'd go for Bud Dupree in the 1st, with a trade up if necessary.

We can always get depreist in round two and not have to rely on veteran retreads.

We can always get depreist in round two and not have to rely on veteran retreads.

Personally, I don't think that "veteran retreads" are to be despised at all. Look at Rolando McClain in Dallas, or Terrance Knighton in Denver. Ahmad Brooks and Glenn Dorsey rehabbed their careers with San Francisco. Picking up veterans at low cost and having them turn into productive players is one of the quickest routes to improving a unit. Casillas and Ayers (and Branch) may or may not work out, but if they do, we shouldn't look a gift horse in the mouth.

I also have yet to see anything that makes me think that Trey Depriest would be worth a 2nd round pick, or that we should use a 2nd round pick on a MLB.

I was just wondering what do you guys think of shaq Johnson? Do you guys see him as a fit for our defense?

I'm new here, and I just wanna say that's it really cool that you guys talk draft this early on the season.

I assume you mean Washington LB/S Shaq Thompson, rather than the Auburn BB player. If so, he's gotten a ton of discussion on this board, going back to before last year's draft, most of it love. I think he'd be a great fit as a slightly less athletic version of Ryan Shazier, but right now he probably won't be available, and I'm not sure that position is enough of a priority to warrant taking in the 1st round.
