I understand that players are listed at a position. Larry Izzo actually played some linebacker here too.
Nevertheless, I assume when people are giving their depth charts it is for the purpose of analyzing how many spots are available and which players should fill them.
If we list slater as a receiver, then go "oh, the Patriots aren't keeping 7 WRs!" we are creating a false situation with a phantom receiver.
We will keep five or six receivers. Slater is not one, regardless of how he is listed. I'm not sure they have a listing for special teams only, do they?
The numbers don't work to carry seven WRs, three QBs, three TEs, four RBs and ten OL. That's 27 guys on offense. Add three special teamers and you're at 30 leaving only 23 on defense.
Well, the 3 quarterbacks are quarterbacks, same for the TEs, the RBs, and the OL. Devlin isn't a RB either, did you count him as one?. Simply call Slater what he is and you've created one space for a receiver. You are actually carrying 4 or 5 special teamers, depending on if Ebner makes the team.
I have no issue with what you're saying. A couple of comments: 1) the Patriots do have a depth chart for just special teamers (Slater appears as a Kick Returner and Julian Edelman as Punt Returner): http://www.patriots.com/schedule-and-stats/depth-chart.html Ebner is not listed as a special teams player.
2) If Slater is special teams, I think they carry five receivers, not six (Lafell, Edelman, Amendola, Dobson and only one of Gallon, Boyce and Thompkins.)
3) James Develin is listed a top-four running back on the current depth chart, and I believe he is one of four that they'll keep. The guy most on the spot is Bolden, IMHO.
