Camp Battle at WR - Kenbrell Thompkins vs Josh Boyce

I understand that players are listed at a position. Larry Izzo actually played some linebacker here too.

Nevertheless, I assume when people are giving their depth charts it is for the purpose of analyzing how many spots are available and which players should fill them.

If we list slater as a receiver, then go "oh, the Patriots aren't keeping 7 WRs!" we are creating a false situation with a phantom receiver.

We will keep five or six receivers. Slater is not one, regardless of how he is listed. I'm not sure they have a listing for special teams only, do they?

The numbers don't work to carry seven WRs, three QBs, three TEs, four RBs and ten OL. That's 27 guys on offense. Add three special teamers and you're at 30 leaving only 23 on defense.

Well, the 3 quarterbacks are quarterbacks, same for the TEs, the RBs, and the OL. Devlin isn't a RB either, did you count him as one?. Simply call Slater what he is and you've created one space for a receiver. You are actually carrying 4 or 5 special teamers, depending on if Ebner makes the team.

I have no issue with what you're saying. A couple of comments: 1) the Patriots do have a depth chart for just special teamers (Slater appears as a Kick Returner and Julian Edelman as Punt Returner): http://www.patriots.com/schedule-and-stats/depth-chart.html Ebner is not listed as a special teams player.

2) If Slater is special teams, I think they carry five receivers, not six (Lafell, Edelman, Amendola, Dobson and only one of Gallon, Boyce and Thompkins.)

3) James Develin is listed a top-four running back on the current depth chart, and I believe he is one of four that they'll keep. The guy most on the spot is Bolden, IMHO.

I think Boyce and Thompkins both make it. Six WRs (not counting Slater) unless Dobson winds up on PUP or someone else gets hurt. Hopefully Gallon gets to the PS.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Mallett traded (Dallas?) for whatever they can get for him if JGar continues to show well. I don't think they're keeping 3 if it means cutting someone they want to keep around for a while.

I agree that Bolden is on the spot. Develin might be, too. I could see Ridley, Vereen and two of Finch, White, Develin, Bolden, total, with 4 RBs instead of 5 like last year.

Likely much if this will be solved by injuries, unfortunately. I just really don't see BB letting Thompkins or Boyce go. Thompkins had a solid rookie season and has come back impressive by all reports and Boyce just has too many raw athletic skills.

I think that if Gallon impresses in camp Amendola becomes expandable via a trade that seems unlikely however.

I do not see a scenario where Josh Boyce is cut, I do not think fans are properly recognizing the level of talent Josh Boyce possesses.

Develin has been working with the tight ends in OTAs so that should help his cause, right now I have Gronkowski, Hoomanawanui, and then Develin as the #3 TE.

Danny Amendola becomes expendable if a 7th round draft pick shows well in camp? FFS.

He didn't post "expendable", 50 yl...he posted "expAndable"...could mean just about anything in the entire universe..or not.

You do realize that Amendola himself entered the league as a UDFA, right?

Interestingly enough I noticed that you shaved the “via trade” and “that seems unlikely” off of my post before you quoted it. I get it though that totally would not have fit with your dramatics, you should get an Emmy for most emotional poster on an internet forum.

I don't think it would make much sense to have bought high a year ago, then to turn around and immediately sell low. They could probably get much more for Amendola after his second season here, unless he becomes injured again, where the whole point is moot anyway b/c he may be cut in the spring.

I don't really spend a lot of time on depth chart issues until we're down to cuts, but i just think realistically assessing the function of these players, rather than titles that might be outmoded, or flat wrong, would make it easier to analyze the keepers.

I wouldn't call Devlin a running back, myself, because James White isn't going to be kept or cut based on whether we keep Devlin. A tight end/FB/Hback will compete for a spot with Devlin, however.

No sense beating it into the ground if you get my point, especially since you're the one making lists now, not me.

As I said it seems unlikely, but if Dobson and Boyce make the year 2 leap, Edelman continues to play at a high level and LaFell picks up the offense quickly then it might make it an option. I would not trade him for nothing, but I would see what the market has to offer, say we could pick up a player like Rob Housler from Arizona I would have to consider it.

If you were mincing along with your legs close together for a whole season, I imagine you'd feel very expandable after many months of rest.

I think anything is possible, but there's probably a pretty good chance that all of those things won't be happening.

Let's hope that Dobson returns to health first, Boyce makes the team, and LaFell picks up the offense very quickly.

The problem is that I do not think you all realize how talented Gallon is and how productive he was at Michigan.

He is considered a top 10 steal of the draft by many draft experts, had record production in college, and athletically is superior to Amendola, Edelman, and Welker at their best.

I am not slighting Amendola, I am just looking at the broader picture, if we do not feel that Gallon will make it through waivers to the practice squad and view him as the future at the slot position it is significantly more cost effective to retain Gallon as the slot receiver behind Edelman than it is to retain Amendola.

Gallon
2014 – $431,898
2015 – $521,898
2016 – $611,898
2017 – $701,898

Amendola
2014 – $4,575,000
2015 – $5,700,000
2016 – $6,700,000
2017 – $7,700,000

I am not saying we would give Amendola away, but a team like Arizona needs to replace Roberts, and they have Housler who fills a need here as a joker TE.

These are the options in my opinion for depth charts –

X-WR-Dobson-Thompkins
Z-WR-LaFell-Boyce
H-WR-Edelman-Gallon

OR

X-WR -Dobson-LaFell
Z-WR-Edelman-Boyce
H-WR-Amendola-Gallon

OR

X-WR-Dobson-Thompkins
Z-WR-LaFell-Boyce
H-WR-Edelman-Amendola
