Eve Of The Draft Rumours

OK, I'll state the obvious. If Mallett is gone (for whatever), who would the replacement be that Belichick would trust as a backup?

I
Hey guys, Since this is my first draft on this site, I was just wondering if this is a spoiler free site or do some people post spoilers on here? Nothing worse than the pick being up waiting to hear it and someone spoils it first. ugh.

I think you give us way too much credit.

This Mallett rumour lends some support to the Peter King Bortles story if it is the Pats interested. There was also that story about the Patriots loving Tom Savage and the Mike Glennon link.

Exactly. I think the operating theory is that Belichick then spends a high pick on a quarterback. But this doesn't leave us any better off, and potentially worse. What good is an extra pick if you're now forced to use it to fill the hole you've just created?

In years past, despite being told by numerous people to stop doing it, people have still posted spoilers.

Garropolo, Savage and McCarron seem like possibilities to me for rounds 3 and beyond. I don't think we draft a QB higher than the 3rd unless Brady and BB have already had talks about a 1-2 year succession plan for Brady.

Here? Who here has the connections to spoil a pick, assuming we're watching live? We might guess and occasionally be right, but I doubt anybody tips picks here.

ESPN often shows reactions of players on their phones before the pick is announced.

They copy & paste Tweets from the likes of LaCanfora, who generally know the pick a few minutes before it's announced on stage.

So if you don't want picks spoiled, try and avoid Twitter too.

Ok, a few tweets after Curran mentioned the Mallet trade he sent out a tweet wondering if Tebow could be coming back because a recent video of him working with Trent Dilfer "looked good."

Let's all just agree Curran is trying to get some clicks and views and move along.

The advantage is that they have this new QB on a rookie deal for 4 (maybe 5) years. Otherwise, they have Mallet for 2014 only, and there is no way he would resign here - he'd want a chance to start - and if he did, it would be at a much higher cap charge. They may like one of the QBs in this draft that much, and don't want to risk being forced into drafting a QB next year when they may not like anyone, or signing a high priced vet as a backup.

What Hammer of Thor said. They could be getting the next three to four years of backup QB for free basically (aside from wages). and if the rumours of them liking Savage or Glennon are right, then things work out even better. They pretty much have to use a pick on a QB anyway, this gives us the extra pick to do it.

I didn't see it mentioned, but Curran claimed it'd be for their 3rd round pick.

I understand that, but unless there's something going on with Brady, it's curious. They need to replace Mallett, not Brady, or they be in this same position again, so as you say, they would need to be confident that a quarterback in this draft is going to be a superstar and be willing to get no return on a high pick for a number of years. It makes more sense to have Mallett for the year and take a comp pick, or to trade him during the pre-season, after BB knows he has a capable alternative, and another team may realize they're up a creek and pay more.

There's too much talent in this draft to spend a high pick on a QB because you traded a QB, who some fans believe is better than any quarterback available in the draft yet want to swap him for a quarterback in this draft.

Don't get me wrong -- if a Murray or a Metterberger happen to be available late in the third, than I'm cool drafting him. But 1) there's no way to tell that now, and 2) there's always the chance they won't make it and we'll have to spend more resources on a fall-back plan.

I also wouldn't bet against Curran's Source being this messageboard.

League source says the buzz is real about the #Patriots and #Texans talking Mallett trade, as @tomecurran reported

There is no deal between the Patriots and the Texans for Ryan Mallett. But the interest from Houston and Bill O’Brien is real.

IMO there's no such thing as a draft spoiler these days, given the number of different media streams available. You can follow the picks on tv, radio, NFL.com, Twitter, etc. and reports trickle out at all different times.
