Allen Robinson or Brandon Coleman

How many WR do we have? 6-7 right? If Collins, Mayo or Hightower goes down, tell me who is stepping in there... Steve Beauhaneris or Josh Hull? And who will spell Chandler Or Nink? Bequette? I think this team could use an offensive weapon but they already spend money on WR (LaFell/Edelman)

There is more pressing needs at OL, DL, LB. BPA around 29 is a defensive player, nevertheless it would fill a big need too.

So spend 29 on a backup defensive player? How is the depth at receiver any better than DL? The later rounds are where you draft for depth, not the top.

Buchanon and Will Smith over Bequette.

3-4 million dollar a year receivers shouldn't prohibit you adding another, especially if you have a chance to select Robinson at 29. Would you like to have Keenan Allen (a player Robinson is similar to) on this team or a non motivated lottery ticket like Hageman?

I think they would honestly target either one, probbaly prefer Robinson but I think that he is more likely to be picked earlier in the second round so he would not likely be available.

How many effective WRs do we have?

Not alot but that's the teams fault. They should've drafted better. I just think taking a WR early does no good since we never seem to hit on WR anyway and we already 6. There are more pressing needs like immediate depth at OL, DL, LB.

Unless you can guarantee the WR we draft will be a stud, then why try? Hasn't gone so well in years prior

The reason I don't want to draft a WR high is because they suck at it. No luck with WRs in the draft. They would grab a kid who mostly likely wouldn't stretch the field and be just like all the other 6 WRs we have, possession guys

Also, I'm not even big on Hageman. But, also not big on any WR not named Evans, Watkins, Lee, Cooks, Beckham, Latimer, Benjamin.

Maybe the reason why they suck at drafting WRs in the draft is *because* they've never drafted one in the 1st round. Their CB record in rounds 2-7 is unremarkable at best (Samuel, Dennard the biggest success stories), but the one time they drafted a CB in round 1 they got McCourty - yeah, he doesn't play CB now, but he's a darn good football player.

I think we need to focus on roles and not position names. They draft Robinson, and I can see him and LaFell playing not only outside WR, but also being capable of playing a huge chunk of Aaron Hernandez' role. Only now you have 2 guys that can do it, but both also have the ability to play outside, and you've made the offense very unpredictable when both are on the field. And both would have size advantage in the red zone.

Not saying this is the route I'd necessarily take in the draft, but it is an appealing option to me if the draft falls the right way.

My main disagreement here is to the poster who said we should take 3 offensive players with our first 5 picks. (Amaro, Robinson & Coleman)

Yes, we could use a weapon. I don't disagree with that. But I would wait until Round 2 to see if any big names have dropped ( maybe a Kelvin Benjamin or Jordan Matthews) or just wait until round 3-4 and get a guy who can create mismatches off of size and pose a threat- Coleman. We already have 3 TEs and 6 WRs on the roster. Can't draft three more receivers, would just create an overload

From all this 9 guys we have only one 1st round material in Gronk.

If we really go offense in this draft I expect some moves and the only safe bet to stay from last year's draftees is Dobson. If Caserio said the truth about going to this draft with a "win now" thinking (about time), I really think we are going to get another receiver early, and this is the right draft for that, and I'm get excited about this idea.

This philosophy of getting players who drop (for a reason), or trying to get a udfa steal, gambling in old veterans, it seems to not be working over the past, humm, 10 years. It worked a few times in Moss, Welker, Woodhead and others, but that is not going to work every time, and in this physical NFL it's gonna be even more difficult to find gold later in the draft. I'm not going to dig into numbers but the success rate should be questionable.

Playing in a weak division deludes people, this is all fine in the regular season, when it comes to playoffs you need studs, playmakers, that's what we are lacking, like they say here, swim, swim, and die on the beach. Always knocking on the door and falling short. When you have an offense filled with 6th and 7th rounders you can't expect much better.

We look other teams receivers and complain about not having one player of that caliber, but that's because we don't draft them , they are always there, every year, you just need to take the risk, but BB never takes this risk in a WR, let's see if this year he changes his mind.

I have totally come around on the idea of a round-1 WR, which is a first for me. The available talent is just too tempting. But...in another thread, you're arguing TE or bust:

Not drafting one of the top TE = forget SB

IMO an impact player at an offensive skill position is the objective. If at #29 you have your choice of, say, Marquise Lee, Allen Robinson, Kelvin Benjamin and more, do you really want to pass on them to make sure you get one of the top TEs?

I'm advocating a TOP TE is a huge need since last december when Gronk went down and I'm sticking to it. I was looking for a thread I created back then, "next draft priorities", but I didn't found, I think it was lost in the migration. There was a nice discussion there, It would be good to look how opinions change in a few months.

I understand #29 is a bit of a reach and I'm not strongly supporting the idea of picking a TE there, but I don't think there will be much talent left at #62. It's a risk I don't wanna take, so I think in this case a reach is not a big deal. People talk to much about value, what is value in this context? For me a player who can contribute immediately to the team, filling a need and improving the offense, has a lot of value, even if in the paper there are more "value" in another player, theoretically.

But, I have to admit I'm getting more and more inclined to this idea of a premium receiver. I won't be upset if they make that choice. I will if they go defense, I want offense with #29 and #62 or the product of a trade involving those picks.

I 100% agree that I'd rather have a top TE than WR. It's a huge need...but it only works if the talent's there, and an impact receiver could be another way to take the offense to the next level.

The way I see it, a true #1 WR would make the entire receiving corps better, from top to bottom. It shifts everyone's role -- and the caliber of defensive attention that goes with it -- down a notch to where they should be. I love Dobson's potential as a #2 wideout. Edelman is a perfect "slot+." LaFell, Amendola and Boyce round out a strong WR corps with a wide variety of talent to allow flexible game planning. But without that #1 at the top, everybody else looks a little shakier.

Overload?

TIGHT END
We have a half-time pro-bowl starter, acceptable #3 and a PS level player. If we were to draft 2 more
tight ends, we would cll it competition, not overload.

WIDE RECEIVER
Folks seem to forget that all but Edelman were injured last year. One is in a boot now. A top receiver would be most welcome. What is the downside? Would we really be that unhappy if a top draft choice beat out Thompkins and LeFell? Boyce is our KR by default. Perhaps, we will pick up someone else for that role.

THREE OFFENSIVE PLAYERS IN OUR FIRST FIVE PICKS?
I think a lot of us would be fine with that, as long as we get a couple of front seven defensive players for the other two picks. We could use help at TE, OG, C, WR, RB and perhaps even backup QB. Personally, I think it likely that we will have at least 3 offensive players by the end of the 4th round (our current 5th pick).

I'm not at all against OL if we take 3 offensive guys and two are a G and C I would love it.
I don't see the point of doubling up at TE or WR when there are also other needs on the team. I would like to see a threat added to the offense, but seriously if we don't get DE help Peyton Manning will not be touched again in the AFCCG and we will lose. Will SMith is nice but not enough.

Robinson would be an outstanding fit for this offense. Coleman is more of a project.

According to Doug Kyed, Allen Robinson has said that he met with the Patriots prior to his pro day.

It's likely we will have a shot at a pretty good WR, but not a blue chip WR. If we have a shot at a blue chip LB or DE at pick #29 I just can't say no. Although, my gut tells me Shazier/Mosley won't make it past the Packers and Ravens unless the Packers decide to take the best OG.

We're a team that doesn't have to draft for need in the first round, fortunately.

Given the choice:

Allen Robinson

Do the New England Patriots really need to add a rookie wide receiver this year?

Edelman
Amendola
LaFell
Dobson
Boyce
Thompkins
Slater
Harrison

Slater is no wide receiver, harrison is a project and Thompkins is an udfa who got a hot start and then disappeared. It would be wise to not count on this guys if your goal is going deep in the playoffs.

The good news is that they're presumably NOT "counting on" the guys who are competing for the very last WR slot!

IMO there's nothing wrong with the bottom of the WR roster, it's the top that could still use an upgrade.

--So Robinson was taken just 1 pick before JimmyG. Imagine the outrage if he had slipped to 62 and BB passed to take a QB? We'll never know the answer now. But I'm guessing if they really liked him they could have made a slight trade up and gotten him.
