The 2014 Mock draft Thread.

New Mock with players I have not used or rarely used (generally)

#29 - Ryan Shazier - OLB - if he falls here he could be a surprise pick. No doubt the Patriots need depth at LB and Shazier is more than that. Also he can pass rush on top of everything else.

-TRADE- #62 for #70 & #114

#70 - Gabe Jackson - OG
#93 - CJ Feidorwicz - TE - They really need to pick one of the top 5 TEs no matter what.
#114 - Swanson - OC
#130 - James Gayle - DE
#140 - Brandon Thomas - OG* IRed - Kinda high for my taste but whatever : P
#198 - Morgan Breslin - OLB
#206 - Michael Sam - DE - Has the tenacity and prove it at the highest college level. May as well take a shot.
#244 - Lonnie Ballentine - FS (220 pounds so maybe more of a SS)

While trying to do this I realized the Patriots, especially in the first 4 rounds, have a fairly limited board. Not a lot of picks really make sense for them. I keep coming back to the same group of about 20 players they pretty much have to choose from.

They need one of the top 5 TEs
They need one of the top 3 Cs
They need one of the top coverage LBs (Shazier, C. Jones, Tripp, and a few more)

The only pick with much flexibility is the DE pick but they need someone there who can be an adequate backup at the least so that is a top 4 round pick.

Really like the majority of the picks, the only thing I would change is change the Easley pick to ASJ or Niklas. Leave Martin at 62 and Smith at 84. With DT now a need at 93 and assuming DaQuan Jones and Easley are gone, go with McCullers just on sheer potential and the fact that he will occupy blockers strictly based on size alone. If coaches can teach him to use his hands better the sky is the limit.

Love the rest of the picks and the UDFAs
I would go Justin Ellis if I dropped Easley. I think ASJ will be gone by #52 however.

Well done. Michael Sam is not good and doesn't fit what the Pats are trying to do on defense so I would disagree with that one and would suggest going after someone like Lynch if he's still there. Much more talent, just a headcase. Ideally want the team to do something more than Ballentine at SS with the last pick as well (unless you're planning on using Shazier in a hybrid role, which you didn't mention). Other than that, nice work.

I'm not sold on Sam but that is nitpicking, overall this is an excellent mock for them

I just want to add. About the Mock where I draft Michael Sam. I only did it cause I wanted to do a draft with some names I have not mocked before. He would not be my usual choice there.

Round 1 Pick 31 (DEN): Dee Ford, DE, Auburn (B)
Round 2 Pick 7 (JAX): Ryan Shazier, OLB, Ohio State (A-)
Round 2 Pick 30: Troy Niklas, TE, Notre Dame (A)
Round 3 Pick 6 (JAX): Weston Richburg, C, Colorado State (A)
Round 3 Pick 29: Anthony Johnson, DT, LSU (A)
Round 4 Pick 30: Antone Exum, CB, Virginia Tech (A)
Round 4 Pick 40 (COMP): Brandon Coleman, WR, Rutgers (A)
Round 6 Pick 22: Vinnie Sunseri, SS, Alabama (A)
Round 6 Pick 30: Rajion Neal, RB, Tennessee (B)
Round 7 Pick 29: Gator Hoskins, FB, Marshall (B+)

Trade back with Denver and trade next years first to the Jags. I know it 100 percent won't happen, but imagine it did, (with Brandon Thomas and Aaron Colvin instead of Hoskins and Boyd)

Round 7 Pick 29: Gator Hoskins, FB, Marshall (B+)

Got 2 2nd round picks off the Vikings for #29, traded around with them a bit to get the 3 selections I made. The back to back OT picks were a mistake, I forgot Duvernay-Tardif was my last pick before getting Henderson. :p

One thing to like about Duvernay-Tardif (besides his good size and weight - that is) is that he has a Ph.D.

I might die of old age before the first pick is made, but it's hard not to like that draft...although some won't like the absence of a blue-chipper in a draft with this many.

I was thinking the same thing as I was doing the mock. But I found a way to get alot of my binkies in a mock, so I had to go with it. However unlikely. My biggest concern was I didnt pick an OLB earlier. Working on that mock now.

Not a mock because it takes too long and I got hung up in the third round with who to take with a high third round pick; got hung up on needs and was leaning towards BPA but didn't want to draft a receiver that high. Instead, I present to you a realistic list of players I would like to come away with.

Note: Not sure how trades work out but pats move back from 29 and up from 62; both spots in the second round are in the early and middle parts of the round. They will also pick up a third round pick from trading back from 29. Trade up from 62 to leap frog a lot of the tight end needy teams in the early/middle of the second; Giants, Bills, Lions, Cardinals, Jets, Packers etc.

Worst fear is that by the time Pats pick at 62, ASJ Niklas and CJF are all gone. Would definitely need to take Niklas or ASJ in the 40-45 range. Bolded names signify binkie/must have guys.

Troy Niklas
Dominique Easley

DaQuan Jones
Christian Jones
Brandon Thomas
Antone Exum
Brandon Coleman
Trey Burton
Lorenzo Taliaferro
Bryn Renner

Didn't address Oline as much because the team has been really high on Josh Kline, has a spot for Cannon at G possibly, Connolly could always slide to center if Wendell doesn't regain form, and could be a spot for veteran signing. Brandon Thomas comes back after a red shirt year and replaces Connolly at guard in 2015.

Christian Jones fills the need for a legit depth LB and coverage guy. Very versatile.

Exum competes for starting SS role. Big hitter and good in coverage.

Coleman competes for WR spot/practice squad potential. Could you imagine a red zone package with Gronk, Niklas, Coleman, and Dobson? 3 receivers that are 6'6" + wowzers

Burton is the new swiss army knife player. Can do anything. Hback, RB, WR, TE. Needs a year or two to develop.

Trade Mallett to Houston in exchange for pick #37 (via Atlanta)
Trade pick #29 to Detroit in exchange for picks #45 and #76

37-Joel Bitonio, OL
45-Austin Seferian-Jenkins, TE
62-Dominique Easley, DL
76-Davante Adams, WR
93-Jackson Jeffcoat, DE
130-Christian Kirksey, LB
140-Brandon Thomas, OL
198-David Fales, QB
206-Lorenzo Taliaferro, RB
244-Lonnie Ballentine, DB

Last one before the draft, bar something major happening like a top CB punching a cop...

Trades:
Ryan Mallett + #62 to Houston for #33 + #141.

#29 to Jacksonville for #39, #105, #114 (20 point difference, small premium paid to jump ahead for a QB).

Picks:
33. Ra'Shede Hageman - DT - Minnesota

39. Joel Bitonio - OG - Nevada

93. Jordan Tripp - LB - Montana

105. C.J. Fiedorowicz - TE - Iowa

114. Lache Seastrunk - RB - Baylor

130. Kevin Norwood - WR - Alabama

140 (comp). Laurent Duvernay-Tardif - OT - McGill

141. Wesley Johnson - OC - Vanderbilt

198. Vinnie Sunseri - SS - Alabama

206. A.C. Leonard - TE - Tennessee St

244. Garret Gilbert - QB - SMU

Another trade back somewhere for a DE would have been nice but if worst comes to worst and injuries hit, there's enough players to switch to a 3-4.

Quick mock with no Mallet trade. Also assuming we do in fact sign Keller - TE & Smith - DE (might just be a smoke screen but I will mock with those things in mind.

#244 - Tajh Boyd - QB (why not? : P )
