My Blueprint for the Defense

I agree that the college level is catching up.

DeVonte Holloman was a full time spur in college. That's why I wanted him last year.

1 ~ My Perspective is undeniably ethereal, mind you, but I see it as the NFL catching up.

2 ~ Coaches Carroll & Harbaugh are the two greatest Forces driving Change in the NFL.

3 ~ On Offense.

4 ~ On Defense.

5 ~ On Player Development & Coaching.

6 ~ On Roster Development.

7 ~ And those two are but the Tip of the IceBerg.

Great Call on DeVonte Holloman, Brother Shawtaay!! He was an huge Binky of mine as well, last Year, I mocked'm to us on Day 3, and I still expect Great Things of him!!

Are any of the potential available DE's at really a better prospect than Armstead? Don't get me wrong I'm all for adding talent to the defensive front but Chris Jones and Sealver Silgia (spelling?) had decent showings last year. Could our front actually be in a little better shape than we're giving it credit for?

Does anybody really know how good Armstead is? Or if he can stay healthy? I want at least one more 5-tech.

Well that's kind of my point how is bringing in another prospect any better than counting on Armstead? It's a crap shoot regardless.

Increases our odds if nothing else that one of the two works out.

This is a difficult year, not only is the scheme in question but we have no idea how the team feels about the health/ability of Wilfork, Kelly, Chr. Jones, Siliga, Armstead, Buchanan, Bequette.

Seriously, DL could be a dire need or not a need at all depending on the internal view of that list. Add them to Cha. Jones and Ninkovich and it's almost a full line.

At this point it appears close to 10 teams are looking to have a defensive draft in the first three rounds.
The
Bears, Bengals, Cowboys, Broncos, Lions, Colts, Giants, Eagles, Steelers and Chargers might all consider three defensive players in the first three rounds if the draft falls the right way.

An interesting article by Kirwin and he doesn't even mention the Pats as one of the ten. If that ends up being true a lot of us who have focused on the defense are going to be pretty disappointed come draft days. Bill will draft the value and not reach. So we could be looking potentially at TE, WR and OG which will please the fantasy guys and casual fans. Any how worth the read.

I assume you didn't intend to offend but I think there's a real chance we go for a lot of offense and I would have no problem with that. We could use a #1 WR, TE, interior OL and RB (both RB are going into their last years). We have put a ton into the defense the last few years whether it's high picks like Collins (first pick last year), Chandler & Hightower (first two picks the year before) then signed Revis and Browner. There's some spots I'd like to add, backup LB, another DE or two (depending on how they like Buchanan and Armstead - and whether they see him as a DE or DT) and a DT (depending how they like Armstead, Siliga, Chr. Jones and the health of the old guys). But more quality resources have been put into the defense recently. A very good case could be made that our needs on offense are bigger than our needs on defense.

I'm not sure why my post would be offensive to those who have been looking at offense it's just a difference in opinions on priority. However Mayo started a blueprint thread for both offense and defense. The defense one is 10X thus why I feel the majority have been leaning that way and would be slightly disappointed with an all offense draft.

There happen to be more potential impact players later in the draft at WR so I'd rather wait there. Cody Latimer late day two or early day three would be great. OG is always a day two or three value. So TE is the one position on offense I can make a case for early. IMO it's a two TE draft and Ebron will be gone so ASJ is the one impact receiving TE. There's some day two guys who can project into Dennis Pita types in a few years.

But then you look at guys like Hageman or Donald and there's nobody like that after the first round. So I'd prefer defense early.

Because you called them "fantasy guys and casual fans".

If the draft plays out as I expect your head will explode when we do something like :

1- WR
2 - DL
3 - QB
4a - RB
4b - OG

and I think that's very possible. That will make Bill & Nick "fantasy guys and casual fans" :)

If a guy like Hageman or Donald were actually available when the Pats pick, I think you'd find no arguments. And personally, I'd add Shazier to that list. But I have a feeling that those defenders with elite athleticism are going to be gone by #29, while the WR position is still going to be stacked.

I see your point now. No I certainly didn't mean to insinuate those looking for offense were all fantasy geeks or casual fans. Just that drafting the skill positions usually gets the biggest pub. I don't think most of the fans on this forum want to go without some improvement to the DL and LB cores. Even wanting defense first I really want a TE, OG, C, WR and RB. I can see your draft playing out that way but would frankly hate it. They don't get a TE or first round DL and no impact LB.

Honestly if the draft plays out that way my preference would be trade back from 29 to 35-38 and take ASJ and then trade up from 62 to 40-45 and get Tuitt. You get two players with immediate impact potential although a few blemishes. Assuming those two trades equal a wash and you basically have your original picks left you can still go get a LB, OG, WR, C and something else with the remaining picks.

But you're right the WR position would still be loaded. As much as I like Cooks and a few others the depth of the position doesn't equal a great fall off that it does at other positions.

It's a tough year to guess "who will be there" but I'm guessing, like you, that Hageman and Donald are gone, if we want those types then I think we'll be choosing between Tuitt, Easley and Allen Robinson.

I think Hageman is a coin flip to be there. I don't see how Donald lasts.

if you've locked down the outside (theoretically revis and browner along with the other corners), then it's time to get over the top physical on the rest of the field.....time for a bucko kilroy type of a draft

ideally, this would include the drafting of calvin pryor for a safety, anthony johnson for a DT, jeremiah attoachu as a DE/OLB and jordan tripp for an LB......adding these guys to what is already there, and you can get downright nasty with your schemes.......

I agree. But I don't see Pryor lasting until 29.

From what I've been seeing in all the mock drafts lately, it seems like Nix, Tuitt and Easley may be around when we pick. It also seems like Shazier is flying up the draft boards and will be gone by the time we pick.
I'm thinking it's more likely that we trade down which in this draft wouldn't necessarily be a bad thing.
