re: NFLPA says, "18 game season... no way"

Good for the NFLPA. Of all of the horrible ideas the owners come up with none is worse than expanding the season beyond 16 games. They can pretend they care about player health all they want but their desire to go to an 18 game season shows just how greedy they are and how little they care about the long term health of their players. The season is long enough as it is and takes a terrible toll on the player's as it is, if they extend it any more we are going to see the back-ups against the back-ups when the Super Bowl rolls around. Asmuch as i love football I detest the idea of making these guys play any more than they already do, it's a bullsh.t idea and i am glad the players made it clear that it won't fly with them.

Doesn't the current head injury protocol show that the league is concerned about health of the players?

Plus, it's not like injuries happen mostly at the end of the season. Last year we had Amendola, Vince, Tommy Kelly, Mayo... all down by midseason. A longer season wouldn't heal them faster.

I'd go for a 50 week season, with a week for Free agency and another for the draft.

But then I'm reading a football discussion board in March.

The head injury protocol is window dressing, the player's oppose the expansion of the season because they know full well just how big a toll each game takes upon their health, and that longer season's mean shorter careers. It's also really telling that the most avid football fans oppose this as they also know that all it does is line the pockets of the owners while lowering the quality of the product. An 18 game season is a horrible idea, period, having teams play 22-23 games to win a Super Bowl is bullsh.t.

As a fan, I would love to see more games. If the game is so harmful, why not reduce the season to 10 games?

re: NFLPA says, "18 game season... no way"

How did the most avid fans feel when we went from 14 to 16? Or from 12 to 14?

I have no idea, go ahead and ask them. There's a good reason the player's won't agree and it isn't because they don't want 12.,5% more pay. Players get seriously injured in every game and extending the season even more means more player's are going to get seriously injured. Football is too violent to play more than they are already playing, but if you want to go to an 82 game season then by all means advocate for it.

re: NFLPA says, "18 game season... no way"

Yeah, 82 games... that's what I said. LOL...

My understanding is that we'd lose two preseason games and replace them with regular season games. So it's not like the injury quotient will go up that much... teams were already playing... maybe not everyone, maybe not everyone at full speed... but people get injured in preseason. Look at Sanchez. The bigger issue is the money.

Health is the issue, not money, if money were the issue for the player's they would agree to it because they would get substantially more than they do now. The players know that longer seasons will mean shorter careers and more long term health issues and they are smart enough to turn down the money.

I'm clearly an over the top NFL fan...I remember Mo ,Lo,Ko and Ro from the 60's Giants..and I can spell Lenkaitis off the top of my head. I remember loving the 12 to 14 game expansion and then ther expansion to 16 games.

I loathe any expansion of the season beyond 16 games...the reasons SHOULD be apparent.

re: NFLPA says, "18 game season... no way"

I think the NFL is going about it the wrong way. 18 game season is never going to fly. They'd have a better shot at extending the playoffs somehow. Postseason games make more revenue and sell more tickets anyways imo.

So 12 to 14 is awesome...

14 to 16 is even more awesome...

And 16 to 18 is Satanic. Even when eliminating two preseason games.

Oooooookay...

Smart thinking by the NFLPA

More is known about safety and health now than when those changes were made.

what do 2 preseason games have to do with anything? that would lead to 90% scrubini football to evaluate rooks and the back end of the roster. The carnage from 16 games is apparent, as far as injuries is concerend.

and please, do not EVER frame any reply by me with something so ridiculous as "satanic". I'm against expansion to 18 for rational, easily indentifiable reasons. I'm not trying to "win" anybody over. Do not ascriube satanic to me again.

re: NFLPA says, "18 game season... no way"

This is a blown opportunity for the NFLPA to expand safety measures and membership, not to mention salaries.

Bingo!
You can't keep extending the season w/o wearing down players' health and career length of service. These are biological entities, not carbon steel robots.
Look at how often we and other teams are missing star players we love to watch come the playoffs. Even if data supports that IR injuries happen randomly throughout the season the 18 game regular season raises the probability that you're w/o a Gronk, Wilfork, whomever by an additional 12.5%.

NFLPA did something very constructive to player health, short AND long term.

re: NFLPA says, "18 game season... no way"

Please tell me the NFLPA can also say no to 14 team playoffs.
