Shaun Phillips, DE? Would be cheap...

He's still mad the Patriots mimicked the lights out dance.

“They’re classless,” he said. “I promise, this is something I won’t forget. Every time I play New England, it’s a personal grudge. They should take it personal against me, because I’m going to take it personal against them. Don’t come into our locker room and talk about, ‘The lights being out now. You didn’t pay the bill.’ That’s very disrespectful. When we beat their head in in New England (last year, 41-17), we didn’t say nothing. We didn’t do nothing but compliment them.

Sorry Shawn but both son of a bum and Drayton Florence did talk smack. The funniest thing about his statement is that Roosevelt Colvin is the one who yelled the lights are out you didn't pay the bill and they're friends from Purdue.

Any way a few million would probably make him forget but I can't miss a chance to make fun of that Charger's team with LT and the rest of the babies.

I'd sign him in a New York minute. I'd also draft at least one additional pass rusher high to add to the rotation, as well.

That quote is just shy of 10 years old.

Yes I know.........like I said I love making fun of that Chargers team. But even though it's been 10 years I'm pretty sure LT still holds a grudge. Marshall Faulk's grudge isn't going anywhere. So who knows about Phillips. Revis hated the Pats but signed. So I'm not saying he wouldn't sign just that it's out there as a consideration.

I don't think he hated the Pats though. He respected us because he knew it was always tough to beat the Pats. And he's seen personally what this team can do over the years. Was he pissed on the day he called BB a jerk? Probably. Or maybe he just had a chat with Rex Ryan earlier and there's always a chip when an underdog plays against a more established team.

But I think once the Jets refused to pay him and traded him to cellar dweller bucs team that he realized, damn ok it's not just about the money. I hate losing. I hate playing in an armpit where the fans hardly fill half the stands.

Dunno if Phillips is at that point yet. His last stint he went to the Superbowl. I think if 'pride' is the obstacle. He might not sign with us just because of what happened over 10 years ago. However, if say he wants 'revenge' against the Broncos for releasing him. Who better than the Pats for a potential rematch. He'd still have to swallow some pride over that incident though. (Which was only an incident in his mind. )

PS Merriman got over it. Why wouldn't Phillips?

LaDanian Tomlinson said even worse things about the Patriots, but when the Jets cut him he publicly petitioned Belichick to sign him.

YES. been saying this since Ware went to Denver and Allen said he wanted 2/16 at least.

Phillips had 10 sacks and has gas left in the tank no doubt he would compete with Nink for snaps and you could move Nink in the inside and put all 3 DEs in on 3rd d situations

Another name that could be cheap and have gas left in Anthony Spencer. He could be sitting around in MAy/June and we could scoop him up cheap

I would love the Pats to sign him. He's a good vet who's still got fuel left in the tank.

Spencer's known for having a little bit of the dog in him.

I'm still pissed that Bill foolishly ignored signing John Abraham - I meant Pro Bowler John Abraham - during free agency last off-season, and it cost us dearly.
Shaun Phillips may no longer be a 3-down player, but he would at least provide relief for Ninkovich & Chandler Jones in passing situations. 100% of Ninko/Jones/Phillips > 100% of Ninko/Jones only.

if Bill wants more early-down production from his 3rd DE, then he should sign one of Robert Ayers or Corey Wootton; but he needs to sign someone, ASAP, before all of the even just
decent ones are gone.

Wooton signed with the Vikings.

Yeah, I just read about it in the Signings thread (p.s.: thanks to you & others for keeping
the rest of us up to date). So while Chandler & Ninko burn out, Bill fiddles away, just like
last season.

And for dirt cheap too. Pat's are really screwing up the DE situation right now.

Has the Revis effect warn off already?

Can't stop at Revis; there are other positions (#3 DE being at or near the top) in need
of immediate fixing.

There is a draft that exists for this.

Ya really dropped the ball by not signing a guy that has 11 sacks in 4 years.

There is a draft that exists for this.

We have more needs than just DE. Expecting to find an immediate starter at every position of need in the draft is an awful idea.

The goal is to head into May with as few needs as possible and use the draft to build depth.

I'd love to see Rbt Ayers or Shaun Phillips here for $3MM or less. And I'd love to see it done before the draft. A DE in FA will be much better than anything we will be able to draft from our position. In a VERY deep draft, DE is a weak position, especially 4-3 DE's.

All this being said, the Pats DID, very recently, pick up 2 FA's in July who didn't create a ripple of excitement at the time, and they wound up giving us over 20 sacks combined. Also with only about $4MM currently in cap space, patience might be the better virtue.
