Jared Allen, Shaun Phillips among Patriots DE Targets | NFL Spin Zone

Shaun Phillips (DEN)
Despite recording 10 sacks in 2013 and 9.5 sacks in 2012, Phillips hasn’t garnered much attention in free agency. He’ll be 33 this May and though he’s been productive throughout his career, he’s never been a game-changer. Teams may be turned off by his age, but we’re talking about a guy that can still get after the quarterback. He could certainly help New England. At his age, it make sense for him to sign on with a contender, much like he did last off-season when he signed a one-year deal with the Broncos for just $1 million (per Spotrac.com). Why not the Patriots in 2014?

I've been pushing for this all along. Makes way too much sense not to happen.

It amazes me that players in their early thirties are considered "old" by NFL standards. You'd think that if a guy takes extra-good care of himself, he could last into his mid-thirties or after regardless of position.

Last year he signed pretty late in Free Agency as well. Maybe he takes some extra time to think about whether he wants to keep going or not? Either way, the longer he takes to sign the cheaper he comes.

Maybe the Broncos ditching him for Demarcus Ware would make the Pats his top choice.

We'd be crazy not to sign him instead of Allen's inflated prices.

Looking at Chandler Jones situational stats... He really fades in the 4th qtr of games!

Of course he played the most defensive snaps of any Patriot last year. He NEEDS a break and fresh legs.... if we want to get any pass rush in those tight 4th qtr games.

Phillips would help with that, while providing good pass rush himself.

Pretty interesting to think about.

Does anybody have a comparison of stats for DE's and pass rushing OLB's who have played as many snaps as C.Jones? I'd like to see how he stacks up against people playing 95% of their defenses stats.

Just strictly DE, Chandler and Nink were #1 and #2 in percentage of snaps played

Chandler- 97.9
Nink- 95.5
Lamarr Houston- 95.0
Wilkerson- 94.5
Watt- 94.1
Cameron Jordan-92.0
Jared Allen- 90.7

When you like at how Revis came available suddenly and now maybe Desean Jackson I wonder if BB is thinking it might be better to wait. There's bound to be more cuts and moves at draft time and if you tie up money in fodder it could be an issue.

If they'd gone out and signed Talib day 1 there would be no Revis. Or when they took on Moss' contract. There pretty close to having no maneuvering room now and I'm not sure about using up that space on Phillips when I think he'll be available later if they want him.

Closest players that near Jones snaps beside Ninko are Lamar Houston and Muhammad Wilkerson. Jared Allen and Mario William amassed over 1,000 snaps also, but they play 90% and 88% respectively. Only Jones top all DE with 1,130 snaps while playing 98%, Ninko is 2nd.

Hence we need DE badly to help these 2.

I don't think he well take that 1 or 2 million that he played for last season but even at 4 million I think the pats should take a look at him

Well, we all know the extremely low likelihood of someone like Jared Allen being brought in for 8-10 million dollars a year, so it only makes sense that we'll be a lot more focused on one/two of these kinds of "value" signings.

What specific player that is could be anyone's guess, but I think we're on the right path with suggesting someone like Phillips. As someone else mentioned however, I highly doubt he's anywhere as cheap as he was last year, so even at 4m dollars or so, he likely wouldn't be providing the kind of value that Belichick is looking for.

He's overrated

He's overrated

He might be overrated, but do you want to see Andre Carter back again? I loved the guy in 2011, but in 2013 Peyton Manning could outrun him.

We need someone.

Yeah, Carter was a joke last year. The fact that he beat out Buchanon is unsettling, because he pretty much did nothing whatsoever. Then again, Buchanon wasn't setting the edge worth a damn either.

Pretty crazy what they were able to do playing as many snaps as they did, also very impressive to see Jones hold up for that many after his rookie season. I think Ninko would have been equal had he not missed ~half a game with his injury.

Ideally, I think someone capable of kicking them both down to around 750-800 snaps and playing around 400 would keep everyone pretty fresh and help to improve the pass rush.

Add in (hopefully) better coverage and we should see QB's moved off their spot a bit more often this year.
