Darrelle Revis Rumors and Speculation

Re: Darrelle Revis Available

I'm already enjoying seeing what the idiots who claim the Pats will be ok despite their lack of activity are saying. Hilarious stuff.

we haven't won a SB in a decade and you'd think we win one every other season on here. Brady and Belichick cover up a lot of holes. Maybe a little more activity in FA, getting some real talent instead of aging 'value' players we wouldn't fall short every season.

Hey speaking of them!

Brandon LaFell and Matt Shaughnessy will clearly put us over the top! Especially when the best offense in league history just added TJ Ward and Talib to their secondary and will probably be adding Ware soon.

He's going to have to come 4pm. Nobody is throwing more at him obviously and even teams with plenty of cap space aren't willing to give him 16 a year.

Revis must have a deal in place with another team already....

Here's praying it's us!

He won't take a pay cut for a trade. He knows he is better off going to a team through free agency. His current deal pays him a lot, but provides no security. He wants to get paid and have security. This is not really news.

He will take a pay cut when he hits free agency, but he is going to get a monster of a guarantee (probably around $30 million).

Go all in BB, even if it limits you where you cant do much else in FA. This guy can take a whole god damn side of the field away.

You mean the Patriots, who haven't won a SB in a decade despite having the best coach and qb in the league, and who's owner routinely nickels and dimes his way to free agents, draft picks, and his own players? That team????

We don't know that. There may be a few teams willing to do just that, but don't want to fork over a draft pick to do so when they can just wait for Tampa to cut him and negotiate with him then. Again, Shields and Talib killed it on the market. Hard not to see Revis getting considerably more than those two. He doesn't strike me as someone that will play for less on a contender and the Pats, as we know, are not the type of team to shell out top end money for upper echelon free agents (even if it's the best CB in the league today). It's a shame because they should really consider doing it. Revis, Woodyard, and some additions through the draft at DT and DE instantly turn this defense into a top three unit and completely change what Belichick and Patricia can do. Exotic blitz packages could suddenly be called and they can put a safety up in the box a lot more often to take on the run or cover TE's and RB's because they'll have all the confidence in the world that Revis can shut down the opposing team's #1 one on one.

I don't think Kraft was talking about an once in the generation player like Revis. He was talking about doing what the Broncos are doing in going gangbusters on multiple free agents and throwing huge money at them.

Well, we will see Rob. The only time the Patriots have paid the #1 salary at any position was for Brady. If Revis wants to be the #1 paid CB, as hypothesized, I don't see it happening in NE.

Re: Darrelle Revis Available

Then we should prepare ourselves for another crushing postseason loss to the Forehead, which would improve his playoff record against Brady to 3-2. It already makes me sick just to think about.

...and Moss, and Wilfork, and Mankins, and Gost just to name a few. Difference is these guys were already on the team. The Pats don't have much of a history (outside of maybe Thomas but I would have to re-visit his contract) of signing outside FA's for top dollar in the free agent market. A move for Revis would be a complete change of policy for them. But it would single handidly go a long way toward solidifying the defense.

Ummm.... The Pats paid #1 money to Seymour, Mankins, and Wilfork (at least for a 3-4 NT). Also, Moss, Mayo, and others got close to top of the market deals when they re-signed. It is a falicy that the Pats are afraid to pay top of the market money.

As I said before, this is uncharted territory because elite, once in a generation players rarely if ever hit free agency. I think Peppers is the only other free agent that we can compare to Revis in this category and I don't know if Belichick liked Peppers as much as he likes Revis.

Typically, free agents who get top dollar at their position aren't among the top players at their position. For example, Talib is the highest paid CB other than Revis now and he clearly isn't the second best CB in the NFL.

I think my source was mistaken Kontra and you are right about those players contracts (at the time). I wonder how they feel about those contracts today? I agree that Revis would still be an unprecedented move, though, and I would be surprised to see it happen.

1) Reports are that Revis won't take a pay cut,
2) Reports are that Revis won't play for a non-contender, such as Oakland

Factor #2 may mean we are only competing with perennial playoff-contending teams, rather than everyone, for his services

What contending teams who are weak at DB have the most cap space?

If we are bidding against 4-5 teams at most, then maybe he caves a little on demand #1, if demand #2 is really important to him.
