Darrelle Revis Rumors and Speculation

Talib is getting almost $10m a year in guaranteed money for the first 3 years. After that he can probably be cut. Revis is probably worth $13m as a Patriot.

Would the Patriots spend $13m?

If Belichick believes shutting down half of the field is worth $13m a year he will and you'd like to think as a defensive coach he would love to have Revis even at that much because it allows the front 7 to do so much more.

Who knows?

Revis is a better player... more durable than Talib, so it comes down to the monetary value the front office attaches to the player and how wide they are willing to stretch that margin for a shutdown corner.

How do you know that his thinking hasn't changed and maybe he's willing to take a little less money and sign with a contender, it's possible.

Well the three holdouts in the past, would make one think that he is always after the money and could care less about winning. Afterall, he did sign with the Jets and the Bucs.

The fact that the Patriots gave $8 or $9m to Mankins and $10m a year to Wilfork tells me that they would certainly give Revis at least $12m a year. If Ed Reed were on the market and in his prime, the Patriots would give him $14m without even thinking about it.

This.

I don't know what to think sincerely, if I want this guy in NE or not.

This behavior is unacceptable and I have my questions about his locker room behavior, also signing him now would seem like a desperate try to compensate the loss of Talib and not typical BB behavior.

On the other hand, what he can do on a man coverage a few people can.

Yeah, anyone who say the Pats would never pay for Revis are not looking at this correctly. The Pats will pay for elite, best of their generation type players. The thing is that none of those guys hit free agency. The closest to it that I can think of is Julius Peppers, but I think Belichick felt Peppers was just out of that category.

Revis is arguably the best CB of any generation. He is the Brady of CBs. I think Belichick will pay for that since he does believe you can never have too many CBs.

Based on this market, $13 million is not a lot of money for a guy like Revis. Last year, I would say it is crazy money. But the market seems to be catching up to Revis' contract demands.

revis at similar money to talib is a no brainer.....i'd rather bank on an elite player coming off down play in a bad situation on a bad team, to a quasi-elite player with a chronic injury history.....

it all comes down to how much they are willing to commit for the position

Tampering Question

Are the Patriots allowed to talk to Revis before the Bucs release him?

Re: Tampering Question

im pretty sure they could but only if given permission from the bucs...but any team could make a trade right at 4pm deadline to trade for his rights for a conditional pick, only forking over pick in case revis is with team on X date or something like that

Re: Tampering Question

Only if the Bucs give them permssion. Jason Licht who is the GM is close to Belichick and a former Patriot front office staff member. There is a chance he would give his friend permission to negotiate with Revis, but I doubt he will unless the Pats are trading with Tampa and it is contingent on Revis redoing his deal.

This is my predication – the Patriots will trade a 2015 conditional draft pick to Tampa (it will be a third to fifth round pick depending on performance and roster status). Revis will take a pay cut and drop the $1.5M roster bonus and $1.5M workout bonus and we will pay him $13M for 2014, if he plays well and the team is happy with him they will look at a complete restructure/extension in 2015s offseason.

He also would 'love' to play for the Jets

Yeah, it would be pretty stupid of him to say, "I would never play for the Patriots," if he's trying to get the most money he can from anyone (especially the Jets).

Revis would love to play for the LA Sparks if they paid him his 16 million.

the quote is..."wants to play for NE for $16 million"

[ =$2 million ]

My hope now is that a team doesn't pony up the supposed 5th round pick it would take to acquire Revis' rights if NE is in the running for him.

If you were making the decision, knowing what Talib and the other CBs were paid, do you send a 5th round pick and assume Revis' contract to guarantee he is yours? Or wait for TB to release him and hope you can sign him?

you make the trade to prevent an all out bidding war, which we know is not the patriots way. making the trade gives you exclusive negotiating rights...obviously the player has leverage, but the team still has a window to make a deal without others (legally) having the ability to make offers.
