It's not good enough to "not be a bad team"...no one questions whether the pats are an elite top 6 or 7 team. However, that's not the goal.ll

I question the Patriots being a top 6 or 7 team. Doesn't anybody remember this defense before Talib, and what the D looked like when he went down? Combine that D with a middle of the road offense (like we now have), and you don't have a top 6 or 7 team.

DeMarcus Ware gives rundown of his 2013 injuries, angered at how much they held him back | Dallas Morning News

John Elway has been possessed by the spirit of Al Davis.

The Broncos are playing long odds with Talib, Ware and Manning. Talib is a cross-body block by a 190-pound slot receiver away from the IR, Ware is coming off a poor season bothered by back, elbow and quad injuries, and Manning is ancient with a neck that needed four surgeries to prop up a head that is the size of a Mini Cooper.

Good luck, Elway. Keep spending. It will be fun to see how your back ups are doing in November and December.
Rainbows and Unicorns, Rainbows and Unicorns....

That makes zero sense.

An elite team, No matter how you rank them has a chance to win a championship. That's the ultimate goal.

But with overpaying a guy like Talib with Manning at an age where he could hit the age wall this year may be like going all in on a Texas Holdem chasing a royal flush needing the river to be an Ace of Spades.

The Broncos' window with Manning is most likely 2014. Odds are this is his last year with the Broncos. They either win now or start over.

The Pats' window with Brady is 2-3 years or longer. He will outlast Manning because his physical skills aren't diminishing as fast as Manning's and his cap hit isn't nearly as large. The Pats are currently something like $40 million under the projected 2015 cap and can do what the Broncos are doing next year.

The windows for Brady and Manning are very different. Manning is another year older, played three more seasons than Brady and had more wear and tear, and seems to be losing significant arm strength year after year (the guy can't throw over 20 yards anymore without throwing floaters).

Every team has an approach to team building; personally, I am an advocate for building through the draft and retaining you talent. My disappointment for yesterday is for the loss of Edelman and Spikes (even though he being an idiot forced that outcome). I never expected us to sign Talib for $10 million a season, and personally, I do not think he is that big of a difference maker. That is big dog money, and big dogs show up in the biggest games of the year, Talib is on the sideline, in addition, he is not Revis or Sherman he cannot go out on an island and stop any WR 1on1, he can control the WR but he cannot stop them. He shut out Graham, but Graham is a TE and the game planning of Belichick to put a CB on him had as much to do with that outcome as Talib.

Um yeah, let's shoot for "being in the running" for a championship every year. If that is the goal, the pats have been the best team in the league for the past 7-8 seasons.

I remember how the D looked like without Kelly, Wilfork, Mayo AND Talib. Yes he made a big difference in the defense last season but don't forget how many injuries we had. In 2012 he made such a huge difference because they finally had another capable DB, except McCourty. Dennard was still a rookie who played a few games, and the safeties were god awful.

It's always the same every damn off season. Everyone complains that FA X and Y wasn't signed and that next season they are going to be mediocre. This team is right now still the 2nd best team in the AFC and I'd say under the top5-6 teams in the NFL. I mean look at last season. The D was for most parts without their 3-4 best players and don't get me started on the WR + Gronk injury. This team will always find a way to win.

You mean when they almost won the Superbowl. Took a perfect throw and a great catch by Manningham.

?????????????????

No one guarenteed a Lombardi trophy in March. ....

I have serious questions whether you been watching this team pre Talib.

They were a better team than us last year, and they just took our best defensive player. They improved / we stepped back. You must have forgotten what our defense looked like without Talib - one of the worst in the league.

The Patriots and the Broncos split last season, so I don't buy the Broncos being "better" than the Pats. Put Mayo, Wilfork, Kelly, Gronkowski and a healthy Talib on the field for all 60 minutes of the AFCC in Denver and that's a fair fight. Those teams were extremely well-matched.

The defense improved from 2012 to 2013 for a variety of reasons, not just Aquib Talib. The most important factor was stability in the secondary with Dennard, Talib, Gregory, McCourty and Arrington playing for a second year as a unit. Logan Ryan and Duron Harmon have to step up this year with whomever they bring in. There will be free agents to compete for jobs in this secondary.

There is no way, with Talib's hip injury and off-field lunacy, that he's worth six-years at $57 million with $26 million guaranteed. I'd be more upset if the Patriots committed that kind of money to Talib. That contract is bigger than the one Jerod Mayo signed in 2011.

?????????????????

Whatever, you can be satisfied with being merely a "contender" ever year. We have been contenders since 2005 with zero Super Bowls during that time frame.

I'm gonna laugh when Talib missing time due to his bad hip. ....

Ward, Ware and Talib. That's pretty impressive!

Yes, I know they still have holes.

If the Pats had made those three signings, we all would be gearing up for 19-0 right now!!

The risk associated with them is marginally higher than the risk associated with a player with a perfect history of health. I will take Talib, Ware, and Manning over 95% of the NFL even with their risks. He is trying to win a Super Bowl, unlike Belichick he recognizes that the window on Manning’s career is closing and without a HOF QB the road to the Super Bowl is a lot harder. He is trying win while he can, we should be doing the same thing.

Exactly people are acting like Brady is 25! The Road to the SB goes through Denver where Brady has a LOSING Record!

2x to the SB. 2x narrowly defeated by luck and chocking of key players. Last year was the first time where I knew for the first time in years that this team will get into the play offs but no chance for a SB. Even the good teams only have "chances" and are "contenders". Look at the 49ers. Probably over the last 3 years the best team in the NFL and they got NO ring. Winning the SB isn't easy but the best franchises can give them a chance every year and that's what the Pats have done over the last seasons.

Thank you!

Finally someone that actually has a brain.

And by January 2015, the road may be going through Foxboro. Last time I checked, it is impossible to clinch HFA advantage in March. Talib is one hip injury from making them letting DRC go for him a monumentally stupid idea.
