"Salary Cap for Dummies"

That article dovetails nicely with the "mortgage the future?" thread.

I don't need to read it. I was told for years that the "cap is crap."

Truly, though, I'll read through it when I have time. Thanks for the link.

Look what Arizona has ahead after restructuring Fitzgerald...cap hits of:
8.6 mill this year
23.6 mill in '15
17.6 in '16
17.35 in '17
17.35 in '18
For a guy who touches the ball 6 times on a good day

This is pretty much my argument for people wanting to bring in a franchise WR, especially when you already have a franchise QB. In my opinion, it's going to be difficult to absorb that kind of cap hit when the 2 players are costing you 30-35 million dollars, particularly if you're hoping to compete on a consistent enough basis.

In ARZ's case, my guess is that they're either thinking that they have one/two good years left of him, and/or are preparing to draft another future QB who they'll hope works out on the cheap. Could be a bit of both by the 2015 draft coming up in 14 months or so.

Sobering words for those wanting to throw more guaranteed money at an aging DT coming off a serious injury. Would just exacerbate the problem (with the last contract).

Which teams are able to do this? The teams with players’ cap numbers very close to their cash numbers. The teams not making noise in cap management with conversions and restructures these next two weeks. The teams with clean caps and no need for the credit card spending.

It is now, in these dark days of winter, when teams set a course in cap and contract management that can affect them, negatively or positively, for years to come.

Wilfork came to mind when I read those words, too. Of course, what NE does with him will depend on where his health and ability is but I'm fully prepared for him to not be a Patriot during the 2014 season.

Wilfork has zero leverage with patriots; coming off major injury with almost all of his guaranteed money paid out (substantial savings if cut). I imagine Vince would take a pay cut or be released. If he is released maybe he signs a new contract for 2 million a year.

I know. But some (like Mike Reiss) think he'll be extended to lower his high cap hit this year like the Ravens did with Suggs. I'm curious as to how that will play out. I'm saying I won't be surprised at all if he's in a different uniform next year.

I used to think "of course he'll be extended" assuming that he seemed to be recovering well. But putting fan boy emotion for a favorite player aside, no way does an extension make organizational sense at this later stage of a once dominant player's career.

Hopefully he will take a pay cut or tear up his current contract and sign a new one thats purely incentive based.
