So, @RapSheet tells us Julian Edelman could be worth $7M/year on the open market

That is certainly a reasonable position.

Folks will disagree on what price for Edelman would be detrimental to the team.

Absolutely. It's a reasonable position indeed, and also one that many of us would agree with, as long as the price isn't too restrictive. That is pretty much the issue, along with the possibility of upgrading on the outside instead, and choosing one or the other between Edelman/Amendola.

In terms of people disagreeing over the price, we can all feel whatever we want to feel about either Edelman or Amendola, but our opinions obviously don't mean a damn thing in the big picture of reality. If Belichick has some type of plan with Edelman, Amendola, or even both; he will keep them. If not, we'll have to live with it and move on.

Pretty much, I think everyone would like to see Edelman back in New England. It's all just a question of price.

Yep. I still stick with my original end of season prediction of something in the range of 3-4m AAV, tops. Maybe 4.5 depending on the circumstances, but I think that's really pushing it. It's the question of whether or not other teams would be willing to pay Edelman these crazy (to me) 6-7m AAV numbers that are being tossed around like yesterday's garbage.

On top of that, it's also a question of whether or not Edelman is willing to leave money on the table to remain in N.England, which he'd almost have to do to agree to stay.

A couple of other thoughts to consider here:
(1) How much does Edelman value winning versus chasing every last dollar? I don't think he'd enjoy playing in, say, Jacksonville.
(2) Does he stand to make more in endorsements and other non-contract $ staying in New England than he would elsewhere?

I don't think he would be the type of WR a team like the Jaguars would target. For a team to effectively make a slot receiver a primary target in their offense they really have to have a QB capable of throwing into congested areas accurately.

Posters often give the choice of the patriots at a discount or one of the worst teams in the league at market price. There will be other choices for Edelman.

My hope is that they can retain Edelman around the 5-year/$18.1M contract that Welker received back in 2007. The times have changed so 5-years/$22.5 would fair in my opinion.

My gosh that's awful...
Maclin can't stay healthy, Cooper's inconsistent, Boldin's getting older, Nicks just wants to be wealthy. Decker might not be a No. 1, Tate's a product of the system, Sanders isn't dynamic and Manningham's done. Kenny Britt has disappeared, James Jones had one great year, that leaves Julian Edelman for opponents to fear!

Edelman is the one I have the least concern about.

There are strong arguments for each of the bold to apply to Edelman as well. But nope, he's the one worth $10M a year.

(I'm not saying he is necessarily a product of the system. I'm saying that could be argued. Don't attack me for it.)

One aspect that could help "us" and potentially hurt Edelman is the fact that it's going to be a buyer's market at the position of WR this year.

There seem to be a lot of WRs with some grey area just the same as there were for CBs last season. No one really seems to stand out as one of those guys anyone is going to break the bank for, and my personal opinion is that the projected prices for some of these guys is going to be less than some think.

10m per year for Julian Edelman? I'm about to start sending around my resume in hopes of overtaking some of these stupid writers' jobs....that is completely asinine.

It?ll be a buyer?s market for free-agent receivers | ProFootballTalk

Anyone read this article? Jason Smith would pay him 4 years/40M...I hope other NFL GMs disagree. 10M a year for Edelman? 7M even sounds far fetched.

How do people like that have a job writing those artilces? Does he even follow football or is that a "haha, kidding!" article?

Even the dolphins wouldn't pay him 10 mill a year

It's amazing what some of these projections are. I would think that the majority would see Julian Edelman below guys like Wes Welker, Brian Hartline, Victor Cruz, and even Danny Amendola (who, despite what everyone complains about as a terrible year produced about 1/2 of Edelman's numbers on about 1/2 the targets, with a higher YPC, and a higher rate of 1st downs).

None of the above make 10m AAV per year, with the majority of them making about 1/2 of that.

10 mill a year...guy is a loon.

now 7 millions is more realistic in a team "overpaying" him.

If they were going to pay him 10 mill a year...then dump him and trade for fitx or some other big time WR and pay him...stupid stupid

Everything goes in cycles in the NFL, except maybe the QB position.

Running backs were the hot targets a few years ago - now they're a dime a dozen.

Receivers are heading that way, and quickly. They get hurt too often, and most are too easy to shut down to be worth the % of the salary cap they've been commanding these last few years.

Pete Carroll's got it right in Seattle by following the old adage: build your team from the line out.

Pete Carroll spent 65 million for Percy Harvin.
