43 Drop backs 3 pressures

That is a huge stat from Pats game against Donks....Manning dropped back to pass 43 times... and our defense got only THREE rushes on him. Alot of analysts trying to figure out BBS Defensive game plans the past few years....but this is a GLARING Stat that needs to be remedied.....wow

BB rushed 3 virtually the entire game. Chandler played okay but was doubled, Ninkovich was a little dissapointing and the rookies inside did literally nothing.

The Broncos barely even spread us out, they had extra protectors and just beat us up the entire game.

No pressure is a problem against just about any QB in the NFL. Against Manning it's basically a death sentence. You have to count on the d-line to get pressure because blitzing will get you beat, too.

Chandler Jones had an awful playoffs he was a non-factor in both games.

Jones needs to keep working on his game this offseason and add some more muscle and if he does 2014 will be something really special.

Other than the one play where Carter was outright tackled and a couple of others when the game was already well in hand for the Broncos they were letting them play. Guys were getting held pretty regularly. Hard to get pressure when you are getting held.

Makes the broncos offense ridiculous to slow down. Easily the best pass blocking offensive line in the league. Doesn't help that Peyton has the fastest release in the league (maybe of all time). Pats need to beef up their line. Brady had a fair amount of time sunday(mostly due to play action which was strange because pats run game was getting nothing) but, they need to get a stud center.

It was embarrassing. Someone made a thread asking about the offensive gameplan, well, what was the defensive gameplan? No, pressure, no turnovers, couldn't cover anybody, couldn't stop the run, couldn't stop the Broncos at the end when they weren't even really trying. Chandler Jones didn't even get his usual 1 sack and then disappear, he was a no show.

Belichick's defenses have been pretty poor these past few playoff runs. They let Mark Sanchez throw 3 TD's, let Eli possess the ball 2:1 in the Super Bowl, let Flacco rip them apart in the second half of last year's AFCCG, and let Peyton tear them apart last Sunday. Even the Texans put up 28 points.

I've gotten on Brady and the offense too for only scoring in the teens, but how about getting some stops on D, too? Why can the other team, even the crappy Broncos defense, stop the Pats offense, but the Pats defense can't stop anybody?

I'll admit, I was hugely disappointed with Chandler Jones this year. I've been really high on him since the second he was drafted, but he just didn't show any real improvement in his second season. Statistically, he put out basically the same stat line that he would have had as a rookie if he hadn't been injured. Far from the JPP-type second year leap that we were hoping for. And it definitely showed up in the AFCCG. We already know that Ninkovich is basically an average-at-best pass rusher from the defensive end position, but Jones is supposed to be the elite rusher, and he certainly wasn't this year. He looks the part from time to time, but the consistency just isn't even close to being there.

Having said all of that, what we really saw was a great interior offensive line vs. a bad interior pass rush. If you don't get pressure up the middle on a guy like Brady or Manning, they can step up in the pocket to avoid pressure without a second thought. The Broncos' pass protection was exhibit A in why so many of us have been clamoring for A) better pass rushing DTs, and B) better pass-blocking C/Gs.

Remember how much more comfortable Brady looked when we had Brian Waters at RG and Connolly at C? It made Brady's job a lot easier, as well as the tackles', since their job basically became "don't get beat inside". Even Solder, who gets beat inside with some regularity, could probably manage not to if that was his far and away #1 concern.

Matt Stafford has a significantly faster release than Manning. That said, 'inhumanly fast release' and 'can really chuck deep balls to Megatron' is pretty much all that Stafford does well.

watching the game Chandler appeared to only have one move, try and go around the outside which was constantly stopped by armbars..

He needs to over power people and go inside sometimes.

I wasn't disappointed in Chandler Jones' season at all. I thought he made a second-year improvement that approximated what I was expecting.

I think mayo nailed it though in pointing out that we simply don't have the horses at any spot on the line, and that really caused the starting four to wear down/diminish in effectiveness as the season went along. Jones and Ninkovich took what, essentially all of the snaps, spelled occasionally by the ghost of Andre Carter?

Getting a better rotation along the defensive line should be a priority to keep these guys fresher come playoff time.

Yeah, and he was matched up against two guys he should have eaten for lunch. But it's only two games. Jones played well over the course of the year and is still developing. I'm not at all worried about him.

JackBauer's point about the lack of a rotation at defensive end is very valid. Jones and Ninkovich played an alarmingly high proportion of defensive snaps over the course of the season - not going to look it up right now, but assume it was north of 90%.

It would be interesting to see how often Chandler got doubled. From what I saw, he was single blocked most of the time.

Edelman seems to be the only player that consistently shows up in the Playoffs.

Our decimated defense had ONE chance against DEN. We needed to be able to hit the receivers in the first 5 yards and then play great coverage. We were relying on Talib, Dennard, McCourty, Gregory, Ryan and Arrington. We also were relying on Collins and Hightower. The idea was to keep the DEN offense to about 25 points and have our offense score a bit more. This plan was a reasonable one. Putting much more pressure on Manning was an alternative. IMHO, with his receiving options and his quick delivery, DEN would have scored 50 points with this strategy.

Was it really unreasonable to think that our best chance was to score 26 points against the DEN defense?

THE PLAN FAILED

1) The DEN offense needed to take Talib out of the game. They did. We were done.

2) Our offense was pathetic. Very late in the the third, we had totaled 3 points and decided to go on 4th down, so we could have had 6 points if we chose the field goal instead. DEN stopped the run and forced the game on the back of Brady. They were able to adequately cover Dobson.

BOTTOM LINE

1) We needed Talib. Even then, DEN had the best offense in the NFL behind one of the best OL's in the NFL.

2) We needed Gronk and another receiver threat. A healthy Amendola and Thompkins would have helped some.

3) This game could be replayed 100 times. With Talib getting injured, I don't think that we would win 10% of the time, regardless of game plan.

4) With everyone healthy on both teams, this could have been a truly awesome game.

I personally thought the defense played pretty well, especially considering the loss of Talib early on, against an historically great offense. The lack of pass rush was concerning, but I don't think it was a killer.

There were a couple plays the game could have turned on, most of them happening early rather than late. It was the offense, not the defense, that failed to deliver on those. The Colts game is probably a lot different too if they're not gifted 7 points on the first play from scrimmage, too.
