Reading this thread, it is as if the Denver Broncos had nothing to do with the futility of the Patriots defense and offense. The Broncos dominated both sides of the ball in the biggest win they've had since John Elway. My hat is off to them.
As far as blaming the offense, I usually come down hard on the offense when they turn the ball over and give the opponent a short field. That did not happen. We can quibble about the play calling, but there were only a couple of plays where the Denver defense didn't step up and do their job to stuff a run, defense a pass, make a tackle or pressure the quarterback. Denver was great on defense.
The Patriots defense did not step up on lots of plays where the receivers were wide open, running backs slipped through to make it 2nd or 3rd and short yardage, and there was no pressure on Manning all day. Give Manning or Brady a clean pocket and they'll pick you apart, which is what happened. The Denver offensive game plan was to keep Tom Brady off the field, and they succeeded. One has to imagine the Patriots went into this game to do the same to Manning and could not.
That said, I firmly believe this is a very different game with Kelly and Wilfork in the middle of the line, Jerod Mayo calling the defensive alignments and covering ground against the run or pass, Brandon Spikes bringing the wood, and Aquib Talib on Demariyus Thomas for 4 quarters. That is 5 starters on IR or unable to play due to injury.
Several people said in the week leading up to this game that this was where the injuries would be exposed and they were. The Patriots were playing with house money. I do not cast blame. I tip my cap to the Broncos, and am grateful for a terrific season.
As far as next year is concerned, the biggest positive is the amount of playing time and big game experience all the rookies, new free agents, and second year guys got as they filled in. The Patriots will add four to six rookies over the summer and some new free agents. Those guys will be joining a deep and experienced team who entered the off-season as the 2nd youngest in the NFL.
