Broncos sign Marquice Cole

I don't think the majority of Bronco fans think this is "crafty coaching" and a "real slick signing" in regards to gaining insight into the Pats playbook/system. Rather more along the lines of he has practiced against their receivers and has some familiarity with their tendencies and if is called upon, can play a few snaps.

If he is called upon to play he will get abused just like he did in last year's AFCCG and in most of the games he's played for that matter. Don't kid yourself - this guy is awful in coverage. Solid ST player though.

I honestly don't see him playing on defense. After the Harris injury, they needed some depth just in case. Bringing in someone familiar with the Pat receiver tendencies makes the most sense imo when push came to shove.

...and you never know how a player will respond. Just look at Sealver Siliga.

At least we don't have to worry about him giving the Broncos insight to the Pats' playbook because I am not sure he actually knew the playbook even when he was here.

This is great news. I hope he gets extensive playing time. Tom should target him every single time he's on the field. Hell he might throw for 500 yards if that's the case.

I feel like calling him a scrub is being generous.

Yes, look at the 23 year old. Just don't compare him to a 30+ year old JAG. that would be ridiculous.

Why would they bring him in if he's terrible? They must have a reason. Must be inside info or the thought that he has some he can share. Not saying he would be able to but the y must think so.

If they put him on the field as a CB, I'd go no huddle immediately. No substitutions, so Brady can burn him repeatedly.

Actually DI has the right take on this. Given what's available at this time Cole is a good signing. And while he was never a great pass defender, he had his moments, and is a good special teamer. Don't underestimate that role. We don't know what Special teams roles Harris played for the Donkeys.

Also compared to what Branch might have had to offer, Cole's knowledge of the Pats D might actually be of some limited use. For example who's healthy or not. plus calls and signals the Pats use to communicate. etc

In the end, they got a decent special teamer, a decent #6 CB, and possibly some info that might help. Sounds like a win to me.....and anyone else with half a brain. It was a solid depth transaction that is very unlikely to have any effect on the results of the game.

BTW- don't forget that "minor transactions don't always turn out that way. According to Rotoworld, when the Pats signed him, they labeled him a likely game day inactive. When we signed Siliga they described him as a depth move caused by all the injuries. Where would we be without those 2 guys now

Decent #6 CB So if the coach decides to put 6 CBs in the field, who does he covers? the Left Tackle?

Great signing for us.

I hope he gets on the field.:rocker:

I have no issue with the Broncos signing Cole. He's a football player and he was offered a job.

This completely tarnishes Cole's legacy if he plays well in an AFCCG

Cole has great closing speed and good concentration...and more familiarity with New England's receivers than anybody on the Broncos. This is a good move by Denver with Harris going down.

Besides, admit it. You loved Marquice Cole just 10 weeks ago when he did this:

Cole is possibly the worst defensive back the Patriots have trotted out there in the last decade. And given that their pass defense was historically bad some of those years, that's saying quite a lot.

Is it okay if I argue vehemently that Cole has tarnished is accomplishments with the Patriots and has stabbed the organization in the back?

I'm willing to push the thread to 12 pages, if necessary.

I'm assuming you were doing a sarcastic play on the Branch thread. If so, well done, chap!

BTW, to those misguided souls yapping about how awesome this is because Brady will pick him apart.....

Stop dreaming.

He won't be in the secondary. In fact, like Branch, there's a very good chance he doesn't even dress.

However, what IS different than the Colts signing Branch is this:

Branch didn't know Amendola/Dobson/Thompkins/Collie and had never practiced with them.

Cole does. More importantly, the #1 or #2 strength of the Patriots is that Secondary.

Cole knows Talib/Dennard/Arrington/Ryan/McCourty/Harmon/Gregory, etc very well and has spent 2+ TC's and regular seasons with most of them.

He know THIS year's system - - as opposed to Branch who, at best, knew LAST year's offensive system which (obviously) - is nothing like what the Patriots are now employing.

This is a FANTASTIC signing by the Broncos of someone BB has mentioned many times as highly intelligent who may never see the field but has info on the #1 or #2 strength (thank God for the running game also) of the New England Patriots. This signing is a no-lose transaction for the Broncos.

The Branch signing was laughable. This is not.

To be fair, he got abused by Boldin. We don't have anyone remotely like Boldin.

Folks! Stop thinking this guy will see the field as a CB!

Even more importantly than knowing Amendola/Edelman/Collie/Dobson et al, he knows inside the Patriots #1 or #2 STRENGTH.

Our secondary. He's there for intel.

****Here's what BB says about that kind of knowledge this morning in an unrelated Curran piece about Talib recommending Blount to the Pats:

"“When you have a guy who is with another player day after day, year after year, competing against him on the field and he gives you an honest evaluation and you trust that player and his evaluation, who knows better than him?” asked Belichick.

“Even what you see on film it’s nice and it’s what you have to work with and it’s valuable but it’s not nearly as valuable as somebody who is in the day to day competitive situation with another person,” Belichick added. “I think that was something that I didn’t really have a lot of, didn’t really have a good way to measure or find out but Aqib cleared that up for me in a very positive way.”

- - OK, folks. Does everybody NOW understand? (Or are so many of you going to continue to play Homer Simpson on this and daydream about this guy playing cornerback this Sunday?)

Oh, I doubt he'll see the field, except on ST if he's dressed at all, but I just don't like people slamming on him over last year's AFCCG. There's no way a guy of his physical stature could match up with the beast Bolden in that game.

There's a chance he'll see the field, but only on account of multiple in-game injuries occurring, not just to other CBs but likely to guys to Iehacho or other coverage LBs. If he plays at all it'll likely be one of those "Cole 3/77" snap lines.
