If they IR him rather than release him then the team could possibly recoup some form of a compensatory draft pick when he signs elsewhere two months from now.

Because he went on IR past week 10, the comp pick (should we qualify for any) will probably be in the bottom rounds.

Jeff Howe ‏@jeffphowe 1h
Just to be clear, I'm not reporting Spikes wasn't late, or even a no-show as @tomecurran reported. Only reported he wasn't IR'd for that.

Wow, didn't even show.

Not only did he not even show whatsoever, he had plenty of time to post multiple updates and pictures on twitter, which he's practically glued to 24/7.

However you personally feel about Brandon Spikes, there has never seemed to be much doubt with me that he isn't very mature at all, and that's a problem in places like Foxborough.

It will be a shame to see him leave, but if we continue to address the position (all with physicality, nastiness, and a good run stopper) both in free agency and in the draft again, we will be more than fine; and potentially even improved.

Howe, however, is reconfirming that he wasn't IR'ed because of not going to Gillette on Friday. He sent out a Tweet. The only way someone does that who is not a complete idiot is if he was told by the team not to come in. No one has brought up the possibility that he was to go to Mass General for his knee that day. We just don't know at this point.

All we know is that the IR decision came down 6 days ago......and the media is breaking this news right before this playoff game.

Why would it matter if he went on ir? I thought it was Suze of contract. Probably won't get a much of a contract so it'd be worth a 7th before netting.

Spikes who?

Jamie Collins will make everyone forget Spikes was ever here.

I love Spikes attitude on the field, but he will not be missed.

Re: Brandon Spikes news: late for team meeting, was going to be released; could've pl

spikes will probably be gone next year...Collins looks primed to be a starting LB and Hightower looks pretty good playing downhill.

would I take him back as a 2 down linebacker? yes. but if he is looking for more then we will have to let him go

The Patriots just qualified for the AFC Championship game so I guess it's time for this year's $#!+ stir. I'm not sure who "cracked" the story but I'd expect it came from the Ron Bogus-Rollo Tomase-CHB 'make up something out of nothing' anti BB/Patriots yellow journalism slug brigade. I'm glad to see, unlike Spikes:rolleyes:, they have shown up for work to get their job done.

The facts are: We know Spikes has been battling a knee injury for some weeks. We know, as is always the case with the Patriots, the severity of the injury will not be made public. We know that Spikes play has fallen off over the last couple of games. We know 6 or 7 days prior to last night's game BB made the decision to IR Spikes.
Those are the facts. One would be wise to not believe anything beyond that until, at minimum, someone like Reiss confirms it.

Quick-hit thoughts around NFL & Patriots - New England Patriots Blog - ESPN Boston

Reiss blogged Monday morning citing his colleague Mortenson's post as authoritative, without further reporting comment.

Unless he was having a brain cramp, that suggests to me he's comfortable with the sourcing on the story or else confirmed it himself.

I like Spikes, when he is in the game however, his weakness in the pass game makes it very hard for the defense.
I think we have seen the last of him unfortunately unless he is willing to take less than what he thinks he is worth. I don't know if he will be happy with a ****ty deal here, so I say we let him go.

I am reading my morning Providence Journal this morning, and after a great victory last night, on the first page of the Sports Section there is dinosaur Jim Donaldson, somehow linking the "behavior" of Cunningham, Hernandez and Spikes as somehow being Urban Meyers fault....

My question is aren't these folks ultimately responsibility for their own behavior?? Why always the need to blame someone else... the days of really good sports journalists seem to be gone, instead we have degenerated into a bunch of "follow alongs" who try to appeal to the lowest common denominator.....

We also know that there was a hell of a snowstorm Friday last, and he tweeted that he got stuck when he slid off of the road.... not sure he would get placed on IR for that... if it did happen would be surprised.

There's obviously so much more that went on with this guy than is publicly known. I always found Spikes to be more punk than game. Good riddance.

He gets exposed, when play action-pass, and when he is asked to cover a TE.

I think you give Jamie Collins a chance to replace Spikes, as Collins is fast, a bit taller, and can stay in on run, or move back for pass coverage.

Or is uncomfortable about the situation he finds himself in and wants to comment and have it go away.
