Rumor - McDaniels to be the Browns HC

Just a nitpick: It took Carroll until NFL HC job 3 to get things going. He was HC of the NYJ as well as of the Patriots prior to heading to USC and then having the success he's having in Seattle.

Ah, thank you, that had slipped my mind actually. And to be fair in the opposite direction, Carroll still hasn't really won anything in Seattle (at least as far as Super Bowls or appearances). Looks good this year though.

Yes I understand the link between BB and Schwartz.

So, if McDaniels wanted to a run a similar program to NEs he should hire Lovie Smith to be his DC.

I don't accept that answer. He's got a good job in a great environment right now. he's already had a shot at Head Coaching, and considering the snake pit that Cleveland is at the moment, especially with the owner's untrustworthy attitude, he OUGHT to be leery of going there.

besides, titles aren't everything. Head Coach, Offensive Coordinator. Water Boy. if you like your job, are successful at it and have a good working environment, why leave for something unproven?

Family does count for a lot, and Josh ought to think long and hard before uprooting his wife and kids for another long move.

I guess to my mind it boils down to the question: "Is it worth it?"

Considering the state of the Browns, the answer ought to be a resounding "NO!"
I guess we will know soon enough which of us is correct.
My opinion is that no one with the mindset and work ethic required to be a top coach at the NFL level would be content as an assistant with the chance to be a HC.

He didn't hire a DC with Patriots ties in Denver.
In any event, you don't hire a DC before interview the HC candidate because the HC candidate would choose him.
That is a Lombardi move and it indicates he will hire an offensive minded HC but says nothing about McDaniels either way.

The Browns have:

2 - 1st
2nd
2 - 3rd
2 - 4th

In a loaded draft. Surely the Browns will choose a franchise QB.

Weeden is gone. Hoyer (2 years younger than Weeden) is kept on the roster as a win now guy or someone who can mentor a rookie QB chosen by Lombardi (whom McDaniels has a longstanding relationship with)and McDaniels. Hoyer already knows the system and is like having another OC in training camp and in the locker room.

The first thing McDaniels did in Denver was to try and get Cassel because he knew the system. Next, McDaniels drafted Tebow because he knew the spread. Do not under estimate what Hoyer brings to the table. He may be the 2014 starter if the rookie isnt ready.

McDaniels was born and raised in the Cleveland area. Went to college there. His Father is a local legend because of high school football.

So why wouldnt McDaniels take that job?

A journeyman QB who has started 4 games in his career and spent a decent stretch of 2012 unemployed is not 'like having another OC".

Also Hoyer arrived in NE after McDaniels left, and was cut in McDaniels first season back, so the relationship you are envisioning is slim at best.

How much of "Carroll's success" in Seattle is actually due to the GM? They have some fantastic players on their roster and Carroll doesn't buy the groceries.

No problem. I agree with your notion as a general rule. It's not often coaches get a 3rd bite at the apple, and McDaniels would be wise to think very carefully about his next HG gig.

What does your imaginary friend with the Pats say about this?

McDaniels is familiar with Hoyer.

So let me get this straight.
Hoyer arrived after McDaniels left. Hoyer was cut in camp the year McDaniels returned.
Ian saying 'McDaniels is familiar with Hoyer" just makes those facts disappear and McDaniels is taking the job because of a journeyman QB who has started 4 games in the NFL and spent a camp with him before he cut him.
You really are a piece of work.

Pretty much agree with this, but my only quibble would be that obviously the organizational structure involved makes a huge difference. That is of course why BB did not remain HC of the NYJ, he clearly did not believe he had the structure he needed to be successful.

In the case with Cleveland for McDaniels, I think there are some real pluses with Lombardi, Joe Thomas, Alex Mack, Josh Morgan, Joe Haden, Phil Taylor, Mingo, and good draft capital. I like the Lions situation better, but to me this is a pretty good looking job opportunity. There are huge negatives also, starting with the QB position and, I think in particular, Haslem and Banner. Haslem is a very new owner taking major heat for the first time, as we know here that is a recipe for problems. Based on what I know about him, Joe Banner is to put it mildly not the guy you want to bring stability to an organization.

On balance, I think McD should make this move, the plusses outweigh the minuses. However, he and Lombardi better win very quickly or it's not going to be a very long homecoming for him.

Someone with more knowledge may have more info but Carroll is the vp of football operations so he has a big say in personnel decisions in SEA.

Do you still believe that BB doesnt have influence over who McDaniels would choose for assistant coaches?

Shortly after the Patriots' loss in Super Bowl XLII, Patriots head coach Bill Belichick gave McDaniels a five-page typed report on what it takes to be an effective head coach and run a winning organization, which McDaniels termed "his bible." Throughout the 2008 season, the two would meet to discuss the report and allow McDaniels to ask non-coaching questions that he brought to later head coaching interviews

Lombardi probably wants to roll the dice with a college coach.

Lombardi went on to write:
"I believe McDaniels will one day be a successful head coach. I believe this because I know what it takes to be successful in the league. I've never worked with Josh, nor have I spent much time around him. But I have observed him each week, from his game plans to his teams' performance on the field. His teams might not have been the most talented, but they were well-coached, well-designed and well-prepared.
"McDaniels will learn from his tenure in Denver, just as Belichick learned from his time in Cleveland, and some other owner willing to change will benefit greatly.''

No coach worth anything would be scared away from a team firing a guy who went 4-12 after replacing the last guy who was fired for going 5-11 and 4-12.
If you don't think you can do better than that, you shouldn't be a coach.
Most of the very successful coaches in the NFL took over crappy teams.

I have no doubt BB and he have discussed many things. I imagine McDaniels would make his own decision on who's on his staff.
Agreed.

Theres no use consulting a HOF HC about staffing when your 2nd opportunty to succeed as an NFL HC could be your last.
