Panther fans concerned about Amendola and Dobson

They're going with a pep rally stunt in Charlotte:

Panthers Want Fans To Wear All Black For 'Blackout' Monday Night Football Game Against Patriots « CBS Charlotte

The Panthers are asking all fans for a “Blackout” of the stadium that night, so get on your black jerseys or any black apparel and support your team!

Even thought they won’t be in their all black uniforms, they will be wearing their signature black jerseys and silver pants. In the offseason this year, the Carolina Panthers were voted on to have the title “Greatest Uniforms in NFL History” when they wore the all-black ones against the Denver Broncos (the Panthers lost that game btw).

If you have tickets, I’d go ahead and get inside the stadium to avoid the big lines around 7:45 so it’ll look great on TV for our national spotlight. You can tailgate earlier in the day and eat/drink a few in the stadium if you have to…it’s a special occasion for our city!

I can see doing this in college...but the pros?

Wow. "Look great on TV for our national spotlight." Playing well during the game is a better way to do that.

And "voted on to have the title “Greatest Uniforms in NFL History”..." Where? And are they saying they received at least a vote or that those uni's won?

One of those irrelevant online polls that most people don't pay any attention to. I'm guessing that if the local media is this jacked and pumped over wearing black shirts to the game, they probably also had multiple articles beseeching their fans to stuff the ballot boxes on this ever-so important issue in the name of civic pride.

Greatest Uniform in NFL History

"Ok, with me being a realist here lets face it.. Not even Cheech and Chong on their highest day would believe that our corners can match up one on one with Amendola and Dobson .. those two run as good a routes as anybody and Dobson has to have some of the most nimblest feet in football for a young guy.. no way we leave Captain and Drayton on an island and expect to have success" any thoughts on that, it personally made me grin..

I don’t want to sound like a jerk but this is sort of like last week when you said they were worried about Jones, Ninkovich, Talib and McCourty. I would expect the Panthers fans to have concerns about our starting wide receivers; it would probably be more alarming if they didn’t.

I understand your excitement that our offensive weapons scare other teams fan base but without an article it is really nothing more than fan base discussion similar to what we’ve been doing in here.

I'll sound like a jerk for you, then. I really don't think a single Panther fan said that. I think Petty typed that post up himself. It would surprise me if a good amount of Panther fans were even aware of who Dobson actually is, let alone have their doubts about covering him one on one.

Kind of getting tired of the Dobson/dropped passes posts.

4 of them came in his first game, that happened to be a in wet Thursday night slopfest of a game against the Jets.

Here are some notable players in the drops statistic

NFL Drops
Tavon Austin 7
Reggie Bush 7
Erick Decker 7
AJ Green 6
Brandon Marshall 6
Wes Welker 6
Jamaal Charles 6
Steve Smith 5
Stevie Johnson 5
Mohamed Sau 5
Anquan Boldin 4
Victor Cruz 4
Reggie Wayne 4 (out for the season, but it was 4 drops through 7 games)
Alshon Jeffery 4
Hakeem Nicks 4
Greg Jennings 4
Antonio Gates 4
Vincent Jackson 4
Calvin Johnson 4
Josh Gordon 4
TY Hilton 4

I couldn’t agree more, Dobson has not been dropping passes in recent weeks he actually has not had a drop since the end of the Saints game. For a highly targeted outside wide receiver who generally draws the other teams best cornerback Dobson’s 6 drops are not that bad.

On the same lines Ridley does not fumble excessively either, these are young player who are going to make mistakes it is part of the game - Tom Brady has led this team in turnovers every year since the start of 2009’s season, Tom Brady is the greatest QB to ever play the game; point being even the best make errors.

Actually before his first TD against the Steelers...I saw a perfect back shoulder throw from Brady that went straight through Dopson's hands. He made up for it after that though.

I know the play you're referring to and I personally felt there was some interference on the DB's part. Even if I am wrong though that was more of a misjudgment than a drop.

He also had another drop over the middle that hit him in the hands. He's dropped at least one pass in every game he's played in this year.

If it hits you in the hands (2) its a drop. This is the NFL.

Meh, when you've won 29 games since your last playoff loss 5 years ago it doesn't take much to get excited. Look for me on TV'. Ill be the guy not wearing black

That's what i mean. It doesn't take much to get excited. This is like a playoff game to them (or should be) If your fan base has to wear black to get excited for this one..something is wrong

He has not been credited with a drop since the Saints game. You can see what you want but I am just speaking in terms of drops that are logged.

That's why the official drop stat is useless.

I certainly agree, and without even going through a list of them in my head I'm certain Dobson has more than 6 drops.

However, if we're going to put it in to a context of comparing to other players in the league, as Brady6 did with his list, would it not stand to reason that some of the drop totals of the other players on the list is low? Decker has been dropping the ball left and right, for example.

This is not to say that Dobson's drops are not drops. It's more to say that if Dobson's drop totals are being undercounted it stands to reason that the drop totals of other players are as well.

For the most part all stats are nothing more than reference points in an effort to assess a player - you gauge him against a player who is in a similar capacity and use the same formula to determine the result. Is it the same as watching a player? Of course not but if you’re judging Andre Johnson with the same formula as Aaron Dobson and then it can at least give you a rough idea of where the player stands. In Dobson’s case I think he has been playing a very good brand of football since basically the beginning of the 4th quarter against the Bengals and his drops are not that concerning to me.

It was not actually my list it was JMC00’s list that I piggybacked. I absolutely agree that with what you’ve said, as long is the formula is the same for all players the result is measurable.

I can't either agree, or disagree, with you. The problem is that you're making an unproveable assumption. We know that Dobson has far more than just 6 drops. We've seen him drop more than twice that many this season. We've not followed other teams enough to make that same sort of claim about each and every receiver.

Just to use Welker as a comparison, since he's the Amendola counterpart, ESPN has him with 61 catches on 87 targets. If you toss in the 6 drops, you're now looking at 67 catches/drops on 87 targets. How many of the 20 remaining incompletes can we possibly expect to have been drops?

I still think it is funny that the same people who complain about Dobson dropping the ball are some of the same people who complain the most about the Pats not resigning Welker. Welker has had a worst problem with drops last year than Dobson this year and he is up there this year and even had a fumble last night that he was luck enough to recover since it bounced right into a Chiefs' defender's hand.

No Dobson is not the player Welker is or was here. At least not yet. But people give this guy too much crap about his drops. I think both Thompkins and Edelman have had worse problems with drops in recent games that they played in and/or had a decent role than Dobson.

Dobson's drops in the last month have not been all that bad compared to other receivers. It is just that every drop he makes is turned into a bigger drop on this board than Welker's drop in the Super Bowl. There is also a rule on this board that for every drop he makes, we need to count it as three or four drops.

Maximum Cool. Please worry about Dobson and Amendola. And don't forget to worry about Gronkowski.

No real need to worry about No. 12.

Wes Welker has caught 61 of 87 targets (70%)
Aaron Dobson has caught 31 of 60 targets (52%)

There's a reason for complaining about Dobson's drops and not Welker's. You'd have to be blind not to see it. And Dobson's dropped plenty in the past month, but many of them haven't been classified as drops.
