49ers place CB Nnamdi Asomugha on waivers

Can't remember if he visited us this offseason or not. I'd hope they take a look, you can never have enough CB's these days especially with Talib's durability issues. Arrington may need to rest that groin a few if that's contributed at all to his recent struggles. Cole you'd like to see as little on defense as possible.

jets with their secondary will pick him up

Is he better than Arrington?

Seriously? I think so, by an enormous amount.

But we do not want to pick up his current/future salary, I'd think.

If he's unclaimed, though, I say SIGN HIM!

Asomugha only needs to be better than Marquice Cole to make this a viable option.

One year 1.5m contract if memory serves so I doubt that's too much of an obstacle.

Special teams though. It's important to BB and Asomugha offers next to nothing there.

I'd take Arringtons body of work over anything Asomugha has done this season.

He has had 2 different teams to prove he has something left and he has been released by both. Maybe he just wasn't that good good in the first place? Maybe the next to 32nd ranked rushing defense all those years hid some of his deficiencies? Or maybe what Oakland ran on defense at the time was Tailor made for his talents? Not sure, but he has always been an enigma to me since he left Oakland. To go from one of the very best to being released by two teams while in your prime is strange.

Bingo. We have bingo. Nmandi can still play bump and run. I would definitely give him a look if I got the chance.

Your point has merit Patriot Missile but only if Arrington is played in the slot. For one reason or another, his level of play decreases dramatically when he's outside the hashmarks.

It amazes me that coaches remain steadfast in their approach and try to fit their system to players (look at Schiano and Revis). Asomugha, as Kontra puts it succinctly has been typically a man corner. Let him play man. If he's got nothing left, then release him.

I see him as a value addition to the Secondary.

Yeah, I guess but why would a team like the 49ers that play a lot of man coverage release him? I see your point of Asi in Philadelphia where they played a lot of zone, but he was given a chance to showcase his skills in SF and was flat out released.

If he can clear waivers and show better than Cole then sure. But I doubt midsession he is going to just come in and beat someone out that already has years in the system. Then again, Cole has been released for worse. :)

Darrelle Revis recently said he wasn't/isn't physically fit to play press man the entire game hence the reason for all the zone for him.

The problem is the Bucs rarely if ever go into bump and run. There is a trade off there. You don't have to dedicate yourself to either one or the other the entire game. You can go press heavy and transition into zone on plays with longer down and distance, for example.

What is deal w/ Asomugha ?? avail not to us

What is the deal here anybody know?

This guy goes from being considered like the #1 off-season FA to the waiver wire mid-season????

not like (if he isnt broke) that he would last long enough for a pats claim to be effective; a whole slew of bad teams will probably claim. so unlikely we will see him.

But I dont know his contract either; probably prohibitively expensive to pick him up, particularly if cant re-do the out years right away. So there is some chance he could go to FA.

San Francisco 49ers activate Eric Wright, waive Nnamdi Asomugha - ESPN

he San Francisco 49ers activated wide receiver Mario Manningham and cornerback Eric Wright on Monday and placed cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha on waivers.
.......
Asomugha, once considered one of the top cornerbacks in the NFL, signed with the 49ers this offseason after his release by the Philadelphia Eagles, just two seasons after signing a five-year, $60 million contract.
He has just two tackles this season and hasn't played since Sept. 22.

Re: What is deal w/ Asomugha ?? avail not to us

Whatever happened to him during his time with the Eagles, he has looked bad in coverage and is a shell of what he once was when he takes the field. Bad pass defense, and bad tackling.

His contract was for about $1.775 million dollars for the season, a fraction of the $12 million per year the Iggles gave him. He hasn't played for the Niners since 9/22. I wouldn't count on huge interest, because bad defense can be acquired for less.

Re: What is deal w/ Asomugha ?? avail not to us

All players released after the trade deadline must pass through waivers before becoming free agents.

Re: What is deal w/ Asomugha ?? avail not to us

He's not expensive, he just sucks.

sounds like the perfect Jet...

Re: What is deal w/ Asomugha ?? avail not to us

I thought initially we should take a look at him, but he is coming from a reputable system and did nothing... not sure what the problem is, but do not want to pick up a guy who will be chasing guys down the sidelines...

Unless he can move to safety if Gregory is done...

The mighty often fall...
