The third quarter

According to this article the Patriots have scored just nine points in the third quarter this season. This in my opinion is a clear indication of the other team making adjustments and the Patriots not.

Josh McDaniel’s was quoted passing the buck to the player in true McDaniel’s fashion:

”Offensive coordinator Josh McDaniel’s said Tuesday when asked about the third-quarter problems. “I’d love to say that there’s a personnel grouping or a style of play or certain types of play calls that could insure us a certain level of success, but I don’t really believe that that’s the case."

I personally would attribute the lack of second half adjustments and execution more to the coaching, than the players, no matter where the blame lands though the third quarter has been the Achilles heal of this team in the first seven weeks.

Yes, the performance against the Jets was ESPECIALLY atrocious.

1. The Patriots lead the league in drops.

2. Brady is on pace to get sacked more this season than any other season since he's been the starter.

3. Gronk has been out.

4. Amendola has been out.

And you would attribute the pathetic showing in the third quarter to the coaching staff? This offense is not very good. We've had people like you that have come in here and slammed the coaching staff before. Most of them lost their minds when they couldn't form coherent counter-arguments and got banned. McDaniels and Brady piloted some of the best offenses of all time for the Patriots. Now the offense has fallen back to the pack (or in the back of the pack, if you want to look at it a different way) because of the sheer amount of weapons Brady lost in the offseason, either due to the failures of the GM or because one of the most important ones may be guilty of multiple homicides. And you see all this. And you understand all this. And yet, you blame one of the guys who is the least responsible for the sputtering offense right now. That makes no sense, and I'll bet your tune is going to change when you see Amendola, Gronk, and Edelman all on the field together for the first time this season... whether that be this week or in the weeks coming.

Clearly that's all on the coaching staff. McDaniels needs to quit calling plays that result in Pick-6's and sacks. I, personally, would prefer he call plays that allow the OL to block better and for receivers to get more open. For the Pick-6, he should have called a play where Brady put more air under the ball.

I can only imagine when he called that into the mic. "Alright Brady pick six to Allen go!". "Really man? I guess we're up 21-10 **** it..."

"Bone crunching sack on two. Ready, break!"

1. The Patriots lead the league in drops.

Yeah true; but I think if McDaniels didn’t recommend we sign Brandon Lloyd and Daniel Fells to 3 year contracts last year, recommended we trade for Greg Salas at the start last season and then recommended we value his Rams slot receiver Danny Amendola over the best slot receiver to ever play the game, we would probably have some players that could catch the ball.

2. Brady is on pace to get sacked more this season than any other season since he's been the starter.

I would think that the offensive line may receive some direction from the offensive coordinator, they are on the offense after all so I am sure some half time adjustments could help the cause.

3. Gronk has been out.

He was back last week and it was the worst third quarter of the season.

4. Amendola has been out.

Well Amendola being in the position to be on are injury report is 100% on McDaniels in my opinion, he probably shouldn’t of lobbied so hard for a player that was only able to play 1 game for him the year he coached him in St Louis.

McDaniels has not piloted anything he has ridden on the coattails of Tom Brady, this is where McDaniels ranked in the years apart from TB12:

2009; Head coach Denver: 20.4 PPG ranking 20th of 32 in the NFL.
2010; Head coach Denver: 21.5 PPG ranking 19th of 32 in the NFL.
2011; Offensive Coordinator St Louis: 12.1 PPG ranking 32nd of 32 in the NFL.

Josh McDaniels is the problem; the fact is we should have never rehired an offensive coordinator who had just coached his current team to the worst offense in the NFL and one of the 20 worst in NFL history. There is no bigger indicator of poor coaching than failure to make half time adjustments, this offense has scored 9 touchdowns in the first half and just 3 in the second half, so either the coaching staff is the problem and not making the appropriate adjustments, their first half play calling is easily identified and defended against or the players just become 25% the player they were in the first half of football games.

People need to open their eyes Josh McDaniels needs to go, his personnel recommendations have destroyed the skill positions and his game planning is horrific. This team is no less talented than the 2010 offense that Bill O’Brien coordinated to #1 in the NFL.

All McDaniel’s has done in his time with us destroy Weiss’s offense within 2 season (2005;2006), lead a star studded 2007 offense that a monkey could have coordinated to 14 points in the Super Bowl and now destroy the offense that O’Brien built within 13 months. This offseason we will have to trade for some big names like we did after 2006 and then maybe Josh will be able to figure head us to success again, but good coaches do more with less and clearly McDaniels doesn’t do more with less making him the opposite of a good coach.

4 of Brady’s 5 interceptions have come in the second half of the game, that isn’t indicative of the defenses easily figuring out the game plan and us not making the proper adjustments? Brady just goes in at half time and turns into a pumpkin?

Oh, Goodie!

A needless extra thread the bash McDaniels for more issues that aren't the result of McDaniels.

For the record, one thing that's happened is that opposing teams have been getting the ball first in the 3rd quarter, which has given the Patriots fewer opportunities. The Patriots only had 2 3rd quarter drives against the Saints, for example. One resulted in a field goal, after stalling out because of a holding penalty. The other got put into a deep hole and eventually led to a punt, because Dobson committed OPI on a 30 yard pass reception on first down.

They also only had 2 offensive drives in the 3rd quarter against the Bengals.

They had 3 offensive drives that started in the 3rd quarter against the Falcons. The first drive was submarined by a holding call against Mankins. The second drive started at the Patriots 10 and stalled out at the Atlanta 4, leading to a FG. The third drive ended in a TD, but it started in the 3rd and the score happened in the 4th.

The Tampa 3rd quarter drives started off with the drive that ended in the Brady pick at the Tampa 2 yard line. The only other Patriots 3rd quarter drive in that game resulted in a FG.

I'm not even going to bother going back to the Jets/Bills games in the first two weeks, because the WR play was so abysmal.

The fact is that the Patriots haven't had many 3rd quarter opportunities. The fact is that Brady's thrown multiple picks in the 3rd quarter. The fact is that penalties have killed drives in the 3rd quarter.

From the Tampa game and up through the Saints game, the Patriots scored on 4 of 9 drives that began in the 3rd quarter. Two of the non-scoring drives were killed by penalty, and one of the non-scoring drives was killed by a Brady INT.

hear hear!

I think the OP has a point. Maybe call some quick slants or something instead of having brady try to drop back and force the ball to gronkowski.

Be creative. If what you're doing isn't working don't keep doing it. Their DL was overmatching Brady so stop with the deep ball throws that brady can't make anyway.

the offense is a work in progress

what it is capable of will not be important until december

What about the most recent game? Kind of proves the OP's point. The offense had plenty of chance and had negative yards after 3 or 4 possessions, IIRC. That's not good! No siree!

Yeah true; but I think if McDaniels didn’t recommend we sign Brandon Lloyd

Lloyd had over 900 yards receiving in his first year with the Patriots. If he were on the squad this season, he would easily be the #1 receiver (considering the time Amendola has missed) and would more than likely be in the position to beat his total from last season and go over 1,000 yards.

and Daniel Fells to 3 year contracts last year,

Fells was just coming off a solid season in Denver and the team needed depth. If you're going to complain about failed TE moves, complain about Ballard. At least Feels was able to get on the field.

recommended we trade for Greg Salas at the start last season and then recommended we value his Rams slot receiver Danny Amendola over the best slot receiver to ever play the game, we would probably have some players that could catch the ball.

And, further, McDaniels is not the GM. He has final say so over nothing when it comes to picking up players. The guy that has the final say so on that is Belichick the GM. Perhaps your complaints over the receiving corps should be pointed at him. But, as it stands, in your first paragraph you're already acquiescing that the players are the problem, which means you aren't even firm in your own stance.

I would think that the offensive line may receive some direction from the offensive coordinator, they are on the offense after all so I am sure some half time adjustments could help the cause.

They receive direction from him and a guy that's probably the best OL coach in the business in Scar. 3/5's of the OL are solid, but two guys are back-ups at best. There's only so much coaching you can give there. This OL has been one that, in the past, has thrived on Brady getting the ball out fast. Because of the issues in the receiving corps coupled with the lack of a guy that can get open quickly 5-10 yards down field, the interior has been exposed. That the Pats are playing two back-ups at C and RG is not a fault of McDaniels.

He was back last week and it was the worst third quarter of the season.

He was really the only guy Brady was throwing the ball to. Meaning he was the only one getting consistently open. That should tell you enough to let you know that the players are the issue.

Well Amendola being in the position to be on are injury report is 100% on McDaniels in my opinion, he probably shouldn’t of lobbied so hard for a player that was only able to play 1 game for him the year he coached him in St Louis.

Again, these decisions are finalized by Belichick.

McDaniels has not piloted anything he has ridden on the coattails of Tom Brady,

And Brady is still here, yet the pieces around him have changed and/or are injured. That's the reason why the offense has been sputtering. But, given your opening paragraph, you already know this.

this is where McDaniels ranked in the years apart from TB12:

2009; Head coach Denver: 20.4 PPG ranking 20th of 32 in the NFL.
2010; Head coach Denver: 21.5 PPG ranking 19th of 32 in the NFL.
2011; Offensive Coordinator St Louis: 12.1 PPG ranking 32nd of 32 in the NFL.

All three of those squads had issues at QB.

Josh McDaniels is the problem; the fact is we should have never rehired an offensive coordinator who had just coached his current team to the worst offense in the NFL and one of the 20 worst in NFL history.

Your logic fails here. You don't give McDaniels credit for coaching a couple of the best offenses in NFL history, but you're more than willing to give him full blame for what went on in Denver and St. Louis. Could that be because you have an axe to grind against the guy?

There is no bigger indicator of poor coaching than failure to make half time adjustments, this offense has scored 9 touchdowns in the first half and just 3 in the second half, so either the coaching staff is the problem and not making the appropriate adjustments, their first half play calling is easily identified and defended against or the players just become 25% the player they were in the first half of football games.

What halftime adjustments are effective when multiple drives end in sacks due to the OL failing in pass protection and another ends in a Pick-6? Did Mankins' postgame comments coupled with him screaming at the OL say nothing to you?

People need to open their eyes Josh McDaniels needs to go, his personnel recommendations have destroyed the skill positions and his game planning is horrific. This team is no less talented than the 2010 offense that Bill O’Brien coordinated to #1 in the NFL.

Hernandez was arrested on suspicion of murder, Welker was allowed to walk to Denver, Lloyd was not re-signed, the team made no moves in FA and decided to go the rookie route with starting WR's, and the team elected to keep Wendell at center. Please tell me which of those issues were caused by McDaniels.

This offseason we will have to trade for some big names like we did after 2006 and then maybe Josh will be able to figure head us to success again, but good coaches do more with less and clearly McDaniels doesn’t do more with less making him the opposite of a good coach.

Not sure about big names, but capable players at positions of need would be nice.

What about the most recent game? Kind of proves the OP's point. The offense had plenty of chance and had negative yards after 3 or 4 possessions, IIRC. That's not good! No siree!

The most recent game doesn't prove the OP's point, at all:

First drive: pick 6, on Brady and Gronk
Second drive: Ridley stuffed on 3rd and 1. It happens.
Third drive: sack on first down puts offense behind the 8-ball
Fourth drive: sack on first down, again, puts offense behind the 8-ball
Fifth drive: starts in 3rd quarter, ends in FG in 4th quarter w/FG after 25 yard gain on first down is negated by the Gronk OPI call.

The O.P. is just another typical fan who bashes offensive coordinators without having any idea of what the hell he's talking about on the subject.

What most people don't realize is that over a 27 quarter game, that's not too bad.

4 of Brady’s 5 interceptions have come in the second half of the game, that isn’t indicative of the defenses easily figuring out the game plan and us not making the proper adjustments? Brady just goes in at half time and turns into a pumpkin?

They figure out where Brady is throwing the ball the most and make adjustments to force the other guys to make plays. Those other guys didn't make plays this last weekend and the OL faltered. Again, that's not on McDaniels. He's not calling plays so that Brady can get intentionally sacked from A and B gap pressure and he's not calling plays that cause turnovers. This is all on the horses he has to work with.

Lloyd had over 900 yards receiving in his first year with the Patriots. If he were on the squad this season, he would easily be the #1 receiver (considering the time Amendola has missed) and would more than likely be in the position to beat his total from last season and go over 1,000 yards.

and finally got tired of it.

Just gonna wait a few years and Goodell will probably have expanded it that far. Next year should be the 16 game playoffs and 5 quarter games.
