Report: Season-ending torn Achilles for Wilfork

Does Bernard Pollard play OL for the falcons now?

Rubbish news to wake up to!

Get well soon big man!

are you wondering like I am that this was a problem from the start of the season? Ducasse moved him around like a stuffed toy last week...and Ducasse was obliterated this week by a nobody. If true, then it's best it happened now so they can get some big bodies in for a tryout.

Next question...what veteran DT's are available?
Doubt if this is a longstanding issue with VW. Tendons don't slowly rupture.

Time to see what an Francis can do. I think they'll be fine.

Damn, just when the Defense started to look like it could carry the team if it had to this happens

Well, let's be honest......will we really see a downturn in play?

Wilfork was dominated by Ducasse. Would anyone else do any worse?

I didn't see the Wilfork of old this season. I think we've already seen "the void".

I dont know for a fact, because the Pats never reveal who is hurt, but its been reported by the media that something was wrong with Wilfork from the beginning.

Hes been playing hurt.

Terrible loss at a position where we have only question marks for depth. But it is next man up and the UDFAs held their own last night with Vellano chasing Ryan down for a sack (trying to recall the last time Wilfork did that). 4-0 and the season goes on.

he was definitely battling something last few weeks. I have really started wondering about our strength coaches and the doctor especially after the various reports, nflpa grievance etc etc.

Oh no. I was all giddy coming on here to discuss last night and then I saw this...

As many have noted, there has been someone wearing a Wilfork jersey for the pats, but we did not see the real wilfork play for the pats this year. IMO, this is significantly less impactful that C Jones, Talib or even McCourty going down. Aj Francis, Marcus Forston, come on down!

Albert Haynesworth says hi....

OK, that was a bad case of Sarcasm Monday.

If true, he is not replaceable. I doubt an injury like that would be there when the game started, but maybe it could result from compensating for another problem. Who knows. In the end, it doesn't really matter because the result is the same.

The D will just have to do it's best to adjust to that major hit. It will require some work as the double teams on him often leave linebackers free to go after the ball. Without him, linemen go after the second level defenders. Not an impossible problem, just one that will require a creative response.

Honestly the way the league is now, we can survive losing wilfork. If we lost talib I would say we are toast

And thatscjust because IMO this is a passing league now.

Wilfork job was never to rush the pusher. Just occupy blockers and stuff the run.

This sucks, but I'm with you. The league and strategy have changed. More defensive end types, vs giant stout DTs. Also, the Pats main LB's are more hefty run stopping types.

Disagree; teams with dominant front sevens can have jags at cb and still be good. Teams with great dbs but jags at front seven will get smoked.
Witness our 2004 season; Or all the teams that have beaten us in the playoffs recently; generating a pass rush = less of a need for great cbs.
Losing Wilfork is worst than Talib; teams can easily avoid Talib if they want to. They couldn't have avoided a healthy Wilfork.

Have to disagree with you. First of all, Vince was completely ineffective this year and the Pats defense is the best its been in years. So, I think that destroys your theory. Second, VW is not a great pass rusher. Third, REal QB's like Peyton get the ball out before the rush can be effective, so coverage players are absolutely essential. Fourth, compare the $ a shut down corner gets with the $ a run-stuffing DT gets. Here's a hint, the little guys get at least twice as much. In other words, you're way off.

Although maybe they bring up AJ Francis from the PS and team him and Vellano up some.

Those two were the defensive tackles for Maryland last year which was the 13th ranked rush defense in all of college last year.

I think the formula goes like this:

13th rush defense in NCAA = 32nd rush defense in the NFL
