49ers' Aldon Smith arrested on suspicion of DUI

At 7:00 in the morning. Must have been a great night. Thankfully, nobody was hurt.

Isn't this his second DUI since entering the NFL? My memory could be wrong but I thought he had one his rookie year too.

Whenever that happens, there's a part of me that wonders if he partied last night, slept it off, then got behind the wheel thinking that he was sober. Basically a Donte Stallworth scenario, minus the death. I think that's a little more excusable, if only because there's a good chance that he exercised some care and might not have even realized that he was still above the limit.

God knows I've woken up still obviously drunk plenty of times, and I'm sure there are many more times that I felt fine but would have blown over the limit.

Same here. In my teenage years and early 20's, there were times when I would wake up at someone else's house, get behind the wheel, drive, and had to close one eye to see straight. This was in the morning after a few hours sleep.

Maybe I am a little nieve as I dont drink much but how much would you have to drink to wake up the next morning drunk? And does this really make it more excuseable or actually make it worse. Sure you can sort of understand where someone would think they are fine to drive after a nights sleep but then you have to wonder why the hell that much booze was consumed and is this not a bigger probelm than stupidly getting behind the wheel too soon when you had 2 or 3 drinks.

I guess even I have had a night or two in my life where I suppose I could have still been over the legal limits the following morning but it was probably following the Red Sox winning the title in 04 or the first time I ever had hard booze as a teenager. But not a random Thursday night.

I believe most people burn off 1 drink an hour and are above the limit in under 4 drinks, so by my math if you start drinking @ 8pm that'd be 11 + 4 = 15 drinks. If you drink from 8-2 that's less than 3 drinks per hour, going to bed drunk, and waking up feeling a bit tired. That's the best case scenario though...

He's a bonehead. If he keeps this up he'll be suspended sooner rather than later.

what about the pot possesion charge.....
media brushing that under the table........

Mugshot looks like I feel on the type of mornings you describe.

the pot possession should be an automatic 6 game unpaid vacation

OK so I guess I am not that nieve as that is very excessive and you are saying would be a best case scenario. So what is more likely especially given an athletes size and metabolism is that he either had way more than 15 drinks or was drinking well past 2 am.

We're going to hear members of the media calling for the 49ers and Broncos to put players like Aldon Smith and Von Miller under 24 hour surveillance now, right?

And is the 49ers security director going to be criticized? I imagine, unlike the incompetent Patriots, he must be wired into the local police, night clubs, social scene, etc and know what the players are up to at all times.
