I've read that comment about certain cornerbacks before (Nnamdi Asomugha also comes to mind), but I've never heard anyone say that about a free safety. Are you saying that opposing teams are afraid to throw the ball downfield because of Devin Mc Courty?

Exactly. The only other ballhawking safety in terms of range that's comparable to him is Earl Thomas III.

Im the most staunch Mcourty non supporter on this board.

I think hes basically a bust, but these last 2 games, Mcourty has actually played very well, IMO. Mcourty has been on the screen and making plays albeit vs rookie QBs. Some folks around here call him "Elite." The Falcons will be the true test whether or not Mcourty is Elite or not.

Ok, I've teased you alot over the years for saying McCourty is a bust with not very legitimate points to back it up, but enough already.

When a players name in the defensive backfield is not heard, it's usually a pretty good thing, in McCourty's case, it most certainly is.

I'd call him one of the best safeties in the league right now, to be very honest. I would probably only rank Earl Thomas, Weddle, Byrd, and a a toss up between him and Rashad Jones as the 4th best safety in the NFL.

I think if he could cover like a corner, he'd still be a corner. He's a safety because he can't.

He had 7 interceptions his rookie year, and has had 7 since.

In 2012, he was 15th in plays on passes (ints + passes defensed).

In 2011, he was 48th.

As a CB last year opposition completion % against him was <50% IIRC, so hardly terrible.

More because they took out one awful Safety and brought in an above average CB, those 2 changes on the back end of the defense combined made the difference and so far this year it's making an even bigger difference.

2011: "The good QBs are too good for us to play zone coverage, so we're better off at least attempting man coverage" scheme

Luckily, any good zone CB that can tackle (sorry Asante) can also be a pretty darn good free safety. And that's what McCourty is.

That's what I saw. He has great vision and anticipation with the ball in front of him, but struggled when he had to turn and run with a receiver. Kind of complementary to Revis' skills. CB is the tougher and more valuable position. CBs don't get moved to S when their playing the corner well; they usually make that move when they no longer have the physical skills required to play CB, usually late in their career. That move is a one way street.

He'll get more. Eric Weddle got $40M/5, Dashon Goldson got $41.25M/5. I'd expect McCourty to get at least $7M a year.
