I am shocked at the lack of depth on today's roster at DT. Both Francis's being cut to me just leaves us too thin. I know that Both Wilfork and Kelly have been very durable but this is tempting fate.

Yea, it's kind of a joke to only have 3 DTs on a roster.

There is nothing wrong with having only 2 DT's active. We will add someone in the next week, or activate Forston, who was on the 53 last year. We could have activated Forston, but there is no real need.

Looked to me like Vellano played well. There was only that one series where Fragile Freddy Jackson found huge holes in the middle, but I reckon that was something wrong with the scheme and they seemed to shore it up pretty well afterwards.

No, Velllano got pushed around pretty good for a few plays early on. It is a big transition from Maryland to the huge brutes in the NFL who can push around 300-lbers like nobody's business. I have my doubts whether he's stout enough, but I love his lunch pail mentality and hustle. We definitely need another big body in there.

I admit I thought a couple of times of the Patriots passing on three bigtime DT prospects two years ago in the second round, esp. the guy the Chargers love who hails from New England. But that's all right. TW is a good STer.

And all the hoopla surrounding Tommy Kelly. Well, he played like I expected he would when we first got him from Oakland. Steady, stout, reliable. Big body.

All the media hair blow dried types will be talking about the transition with all the receivers, but some of us die-hard fans don't like the thin gruel on the D line.

It's a good thing Vince is made out of kryptonite and is indestructible.

We can check tomorrow but I believe that Wilfork played a lower percentage of plays than he did most of last year. This is a very good thing indeed.

Vellano forced an important hands to the face penalty with his penetration.

Somehow I think that Vellano has shown himself to be an improvement over Brace and Deaderick in backing up Wilfork (in this game and in 2 preseason games),

Now, we need to sign a 4th DT.

I though overall Vellano played pretty well subbing for both Wilfork and Kelly. He might have had a few plays where he struggled, but he also made some pretty good plays too.

I agree that Vellano held his own for the most part. I actually had a somewhat positive feeling from him when he subbed for Wilfork in the DET preseason game. Obviously Belichick likes something about him. He may never be a "good" player, but I don't think he played poorly today either. It's possible that he can continue to show some progress.

For anyone interested in Marvin Austin and his character concerns/work ethic concerns, he's recently worked out for the 2 teams that you'd probably guess to be interested in him.

One is a thug filled defense hailing from the pacific NW. The other is a thug filled defensive line hailing from the motor city.

I'd imagine that either of those teams will be signing him this week, and if they both pass that will go even further into explaining why no one wants him.
