Patriots place safety Adrian Wilson on season ending IR

You can't release injured players. There's still a possibility that they reach an injury settlement and release Wilson from IR for less than his full salary.

Because this is a 34 year old player without a season-ending injury, I expect this to happen.

I couldn't care less about Bob's money... I was just hoping he will bring the toughness and leadership we were missing so much in the secondary.

So Wilson on IR, Vega gone, Armstead won't be there for probably 6 weeks, Jenkins and the other JAG WR released, so all in all, when it's all said and done, I'd say we had a pretty good FA shopping spree...

Isn't the 'veteran courtesy' move to cut him and let him find another team? He's already made his money from the Pats in '13.

Then they would've waived/injured him or something to that effect. I heard he was dealing with a hamstring injury so maybe that has something to do with this.

Reiss has said it's not in-season IR, it's the usual season-ending IR.

To be in-season, the player has to survive initial cut-down and it needs to be announced as such. Theoretically it could have happened here since including Wilson would still keep them under 53, but they chose not to do so.

They couldn't have put him on IR before letting the other guys go? I don't get the logic of bringing your roster down to 51. Why not let guys go as you pick new ones up and at least protect your roster with guys who have been in training camp.

Who cares? Ed Reed is a 35 year old (or at least he will be in a week or so) safety coming off of hip surgery (that could affect his production all year) getting paid good money. He has also been injury prone in recent years and he like Wilson doesn't have a lot of range in his game anymore. I don't think the Pats were wrong to pass on him especially if they knew he was going to have hip surgery in the offseason (he and Belichick have a mutual respect so he might have told Belichick about the surgery where he didn't to the Texans).

You want to complain about not going after Goldson a year after they lost out on him to the 49ers, then you might have a point.

My guess is that they were going to cut him and giving him an out by IRing him and giving him his salary. There is a chance they could give him an injury settlement and release him in a week or two.

I think that is what they did with Tory Holt. I could be wrong though. I do know they have done something like that in the past though.

Harmon has been moving up the depth chart.

Personally, I am not as down on Gregory as a lot of people are. He actually played decent last year when McCourty was at safety and he does have a nose for the ball and knows how to jump routes and make big plays at times.

He still gets burnt in coverage, but that can be covered up with a better pass rush that looks like could be provided this year.

In this day and age that tandem isn't as bad as some would think. Going into this season many said that the Patriots needed an enforcer type at safety but with the rule changes and all those things it doesn't even matter much. Moreover, your safeties have to be able to cover which Wilson demonstrated that he could not. The enforcer-type-bad coverage days seem to be trending towards over in this modern NFL.

Harmon's experience at Rutgers in deep safety assignments should in theory serve him in his ability to cover and his tackling ability makes him a good bet to replace Gregory sooner rather than later. I'd say by no later than week 4.

Our Safeties are McCourty + crap (until Harmon/Wilson prove otherwise), which is why if Talib/Dennard get injured, we really should just put Arrington or Ryan outside, leaving McCourty at S.

Moving McCourty to CB leaves us with two bad safeties and a bad man coverage CB starting. Please never do this BB!

I'm actually pretty excited to see them together. That's a lot of range on the back end, and Harmon seems to be a pretty good tackler. That's also a lot of leadership potential from your safeties, which should benefit the secondary as a whole.
